Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 131 C Paper is jammed in Paper Tray 1 or Tray 2 C If the LCD shows Jam Tray 1 or Jam Tray 2, follow these steps. Jam Tray 1 Jam Tray 2 aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. For Jam Tray 1: For Jam Tray 2: bUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper. cMake sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark. While pressing the green paper-guides release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots. dPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine. Paper is jammed inside the machineC If the LCD shows Jam Inside, follow these steps: Jam Inside aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine.
132 bUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper. cPress the front cover release button and then open the front cover. dHold the green handle of the drum unit. Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 133 C eRelease the grey lock lever (1) that is on the left side of the machine. Lift the front of the drum unit up and pull the drum unit completely out of the machine using the green handles on the drum unit. CAUTION Make sure that you use the drum unit handles when carrying it. DO NOT hold the sides of the drum unit. We recommend that you put the drum unit on a flat surface protected by a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case of toner scatter or spillage. To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. 1
134 fThe jammed paper may be pulled out with the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly, or this may release the paper so you can pull it out of the paper tray opening. gPut the drum unit back in the machine as follows. 1Make sure that the grey lock lever (1) is in the up position and put the drum unit in the machine. Push down the grey lock lever (1). 1 1
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 135 C Note When you put the drum unit in the machine, match the green guides (1) of the drum unit handle to the green arrows (2) on both sides of the machine. 2Push the drum unit in until it stops. hClose the front cover of the machine. iPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine. 2 1 2 1
136 Paper is jammed at the back of the machine C If the LCD shows Jam Rear, follow these steps: Jam Rear aPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. bHold the green handle of the drum unit. Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops. cOpen the back cover.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 137 C dPull down the two green levers, one on the left-hand-side and one on the right-hand-side, as shown in the illustration below, and then fold down the fuser cover (1). HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the front or back cover of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. eUsing both hands, gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. fClose the fuser cover (1) and lift the two green levers at the left and right hand sides. gClose the back cover. 1 1
138 hPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. iClose the front cover of the machine. Paper is jammed underneath Paper Tray 1 or in the fuser unit (MFC-9450CDN only) C If the LCD shows Jam Duplex, follow these steps: Jam Duplex aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine and check inside the machine. bIf paper is not caught inside the machine, check underneath the paper tray. Note DO NOT put the paper tray back in at this point.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 139 C cIf the paper is not caught in the paper tray, open the back cover. dPush the gray lever on the left hand side (1) to the right. HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the front or back cover of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. ePull out the jammed paper slowly. fReset the gray lever on the left hand side (1) back to the original position. gClose the back cover. hPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine. 11
140 Routine maintenanceC WARNING Use neutral detergents. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia, alcohol, any type of spray, or any type of flammable substance to clean the outside or inside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock. For more information see Important safety instructionson page 95. CAUTION The drum unit contains toner, so handle it carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once. Cleaning the outside of the machineC Clean the outside of the machine as follows: C aTurn off the machine’s power switch. Unplug the telephone line cord first, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. bPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. cWipe the outside of the machine with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. dRemove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray.
