complied with in respect to the nature of the personal information collected, the purpose for its
collection, how it is to be used and what it disclosed to any other party.
13 Do not place this product on an unstable surface, stand, or table. The product may fall, causing serious damage to the product.
14 Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are provided for ventilation; to ensure reliable operation of the product and to protect it from overheating, these openings must not
be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed,
sofa, rug, or other similar surface. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator
or heater. This product should not be placed in a built-in installation unless proper ventilation
    is provided.
15 This product should be connected to an AC power source within the range indicated on the rating label. Do NOT connect it to a DC power source. If you are not sure, contact a qualified
    electrician.
16 This product is equipped with a 3-wire earthed plug. This plug will fit into only an earthed socket. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your
electrician to replace your obsolete socket. Do not defeat the purpose of an earthed plug.
17 Do not place anything on top of the power cord including this machine. Do not allow the power cord to be stepped on.
18 Do not place anything in front of the machine that will block received faxes. Do not place anything in the path of received faxes.
19 Do not touch a document during printing.
20 Never push objects of any kind into this product through cabinet slots, since they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts resulting in a risk of fire or electric shock. Never

23 This unit will only work in conjunction with a tone signalling (DTMF) telephone, but some telephones are not compatible. Since noise or speech from the telephone can upset dialling
from this unit, errors may result if the devices are used together in other than quiet conditions.
24 Where it is necessary to dial prefix digits, such as a Caller Display override code (“0196 ” or “0197 ”), this unit will have to be used in conjunction with an associated tone signalling (DTMF)
    telephone.
25 Note that some telephones are not compatible with this unit and dialling errors may result if the two devices are used together in other than quiet conditions. The Telecom Faults Service is
not to be called should such problems arise. In such cases, it is recommended that the prefix
and wanted number are dialled manually.
26 This equipment may not provide for the effective hand-over of a call to another device connected to the same line.
27 This equipment is not capable, under all operating conditions, of correct operation at the higher speeds for which it is designed. Telecom will accept no responsibility should difficulties arise
in such circumstances. This condition typically applies to 56 kbit/s modems and facsimile
    machines operating at >14.4 kbit/s.
28 When using the Caller Line Identification incorporated in this device, verify the integrity of the recorded digits prior to dialling.
29 Some parameters required for compliance with Telecom’s Telepermit requirements are dependent on the equipment (PC) associated with this device. The associated equipment shall
be set to operate within the following limits for compliance with Telecom’s Specifications:
„ There shall be no more than 10 call attempts to the same number within any 30 minute
period for any single manual call initiation.
„ The equipment shall go on-hook for a period of not less than 30 seconds between the end
of one attempt and the beginning of the next call attempt.
„ Automatic calls to different numbers are spaced such that there is not less than 5 seconds
between the end of one call attempt and the beginning of another.
„ Equipment shall be set to ensure that calls are answered within 3 and 30 seconds of the
    receipt of ringing.
30 In the event of any problem with this device, it is to be disconnected, and a CPE item connected to one of its terminal ports may be connected directly in its place.
The user should then arrange for the product to be repaired. Should the matter be reported to
Telecom as a wiring fault and the fault is proven to be due to this product, a call out charge will
    be incurred by the customer.
31 The Caller ID telephone numbers that are displayed and stored in this equipment include the caller’s area code but not the toll access “0” prefix. When calling back it is necessary to add a
“0” to the telephone number, or if the telephone number is a local number, omit the area code
digit. If the toll services of a service provider other than Telecom are being used then a toll
charge may be incurred if the “0” prefix toll access code and area code are used.

    Setup Guide .)
Make sure the machine is plugged in and not in Power Save mode.
Check to see if the LCD is showing an error message. (See Error and
    Maintenance messages on page 153.)
If the LCD says Cannot Print and Replace Ink , see Replacing the ink
    cartridges on page 166.
Check that the correct printer driver has been installed and chosen.
Make sure that the machine is online. Click Start and then Printers and Faxes .
Choose Brother MFC-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name), and make sure
that Use Printer Offline is unchecked.
When you choose the Print Odd Pages and Print Even Pages settings, you may
see a print error message on your computer, as the machine pauses during the
printing process. The error message will disappear after the machine re-starts
    printing.
Poor print quality Check the print quality. (See Checking the print quality on page 172.)
Make sure that the Media Type setting in the printer driver or the Paper Type
setting in the machine’s menu matches the type of paper you are using. (See

Make sure that your ink cartridges are fresh. The following may cause ink to clog:
„ The expiration date written on the cartridge package has passed. (Brother
Original cartridges stay usable for up to two years if kept in their original
    packaging.)
„ The ink cartridge was in your machine over six months.
„ The ink cartridge may not have been stored correctly before use.
Make sure that you are using Brother Original Innobella™ ink.
Try using the recommended types of paper. (See Acceptable paper and other print
    media on page 18.)
The recommended environment for your machine is between 20 ° C to 33 ° C.

the printed page. Make sure the paper is not too thick or curled. (See
    Acceptable paper and other
    print media on page 18.)
Smudged stain on the data. If you are using A3 size paper, try using the A3 Secure Feed setting. (See Secure
Paper Feed mode for A3 size Short Grain Paper on page 29.)
If you are printing from a computer, change the paper size to A3 (Long Grain) in
the driver. (See Printing for Windows
® or Printing and Faxing for Macintosh® in the
Software Users Guide on the CD-ROM.)
Smudged stain at the right or left
corner of the printed page. Make sure the paper is not curled when you print on the back side of the paper
    with the
Print Odd Pages and Print Even Pages settings.
Printing appears dirty or ink seems
to run. Make sure you are using the recommended types of paper. (See
    Acceptable
paper and other print media on page 18.) Dont handle the paper until the ink is
    dry.
Make sure that you are using Brother Original Innobella™ ink.
If you are using photo paper, make sure that you have set the correct paper type.
If you are printing a photo from your PC, set the Media Type in the Basic tab of

    Troubleshooting and Routine Maintenance147
BPrint speed is too slow. Try changing the printer driver setting. The highest resolution needs longer data processing, sending and printing time. Try the other quality settings in the printer
driver Advanced tab. Also, click Colour Settings , and make sure you uncheck
    Colour Enhancement .
Turn the borderless feature off. Borderless printing is slower than normal printing.
    (See Printing for Windows
® or Printing and Faxing for Macintosh® in the Software
    User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.)
    Colour Enhancement is not
working correctly. If the image data is not full colour in your application (such as 256 colour), Colour
Enhancement will not work. Use at least 24 bit colour data with the Colour
    Enhancement feature.
    Photo paper does not feed
properly. When you print on Brother Photo paper, load one extra sheet of the same photo
paper in the paper tray. An extra sheet has been included in the paper package
    for this purpose.
    Clean the paper pick
    -up roller. (See
    Cleaning the paper pick-up roller
    on page 171.)
Machine feeds multiple pages. Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in the paper tray. (See Loading paper and
other print media on page 9.)
Check that more than two types of paper are not loaded in the paper tray at any
    one time.
    Printed pages are not stacked
neatly. Make sure you are using the paper support flap. (See
    Loading paper and other
    print media on page 9.)
Machine does not print from Adobe
Illustrator. Try to reduce the print resolution. (See
     Printing for Windows
    ® or Printing and
    Faxing for Macintosh
® in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.)
    Printing Received Faxes
    DifficultySuggestions
    Condensed print and white streaks
across the page or the top and
bottom of sentences are cut off. You probably had a bad connection, with static or interference on the telephone
line. Ask the other party to send the fax again.
Vertical black lines when receiving. The senders scanner may be dirty. Ask the sender to make a copy to see if the problem is with the sending machine. Try receiving from another fax machine.
Received colour fax prints only in
black and white. Replace the colour ink cartridges that are empty or nearly empty, and then ask the
other person to send the colour fax again. (See
    Replacing the ink cartridges
    on page 166.)
Check that Setup Receive is set to Colour(Max.A4). (See Setting Receiving
    Priority on page 53.)
Left and Right margins are cut off or
a single page is printed on two
pages. Turn on Auto Reduction. (See
Printing a reduced incoming fax on page 52.)

    Telephone Line or Connections
    DifficultySuggestions
Dialling does not work. (No dial
tone) Make sure the machine is plugged in and not in Power Save mode.
    Check the line cord connections.
    (Not available in New Zealand)
Change the Tone/Pulse setting. (See the
    Quick Setup Guide.)
Lift the external telephone’s handset, (or the machine’s handset or cordless
handset if available), and then dial the number to send a manual fax. Wait to hear
fax receiving tones before pressing Mono Start or Colour Start .
    The machine does not answer
when called. Make sure the machine is in the correct receiving mode for your setup.
    (See
Choose the Receive Mode on page 49.) Check for a dial tone. If possible, call
your machine to hear it answer. If there is still no answer, check the telephone line
cord connection. If there is no ringing when you call your machine, ask your
telephone company to check the line.
    Receiving Faxes
    DifficultySuggestions
Cannot receive a fax. Check all line cord connections.
Make sure the machine is in the correct receiving mode for your setup. (See
Receive mode settings on page 51.)
If you often have interference on the telephone line, try changing the menu setting
of Compatibility to Basic(for VoIP) . (See Telephone line interference
    on page 152.)
    Sending Faxes
    DifficultySuggestions
Cannot send a fax. Check all line cord connections.
Make sure that the Fax key is illuminated. (See Entering Fax mode
    on page 40.)
Ask the other party to check that the receiving machine has paper.
Print the Transmission Verification Report and check for an error. (See Reports
    on page 86.)
    Transmission Verification Report
says ‘Result:ERROR’. There is probably temporary noise or static on the line. Try sending the fax again.
If you send a PC FAX message and get
    ‘Result:ERROR’ on the Transmission
Verification Report, your machine may be out of memory. To gain extra memory,
you can turn off Memory Receive (see Turning off Memory Receive Operations
on page 57), print fax messages in memory (see Memory Receive (Monochrome
only) on page 54) or cancel a Delayed Fax or Polling Job (see Cancelling a fax in
progress on page 42 or Checking and cancelling waiting jobs on page 47). If the
problem continues, ask the telephone company to check your telephone line.
If you often get transmission errors due to possible interference on the telephone
line, try changing the menu setting of Compatibility to Basic(for VoIP). (See
Telephone line interference on page 152.)
Poor fax send quality. Try changing your resolution to Fine or S.Fine . Make a copy to check your
machines scanner operation. If the copy quality is not good, clean the scanner.
(See Cleaning the scanner glass on page 170.)
Vertical black lines when sending. Black vertical lines on faxes you send are typically caused by dirt or correction fluid on the glass strip. Clean the glass strip. (See Cleaning the scanner glass
    on page 170.)
