Routine Maintenance 67 4 Before replacing the consumable items4 Please read the following instructions before replacing the consumable items. WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia, alcohol, any type of spray, or any type of flammable substance to clean the outside or inside of the machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only genuine Brother brand replacement toner cartridges. Routine Maintenance 69 4 • DO NOT unpack a spare toner cartridge until immediately before you put it into the machine. If toner cartridges are left unpacked for a long time the toner life may be shortened. • DO NOT unpack a spare drum unit until immediately before you put it into the machine. If drum unit is exposed to sunlight or room light the unit may be damaged. • While removing the drum unit, handle it carefully because it may contain toner. Routine Maintenance 70 4 Toner cartridge4 The original toner cartridge that came with the machine may be either a starter, standard or a high yield toner cartridge 1, and depends on the model and country you bought the machine in. 1The starter toner cartridge will print approximately 700 pages, the Standard toner cartridges will print approximately 1,200 pages and the High yield toner cartridges will print approximately 2,600 pages. Routine Maintenance 71 4 REPLACE TONER4 The machine will stop printing until you replace the toner cartridge. A new and unused genuine Brother toner cartridge will reset the REPLACE TONER mode. Replacing the toner cartridge4 Before you replace the toner cartridges, see Before replacing the consumable items on page 67. aMake sure that the machine is turned on. Leave the machine for at least 10 minutes to cool down. bOpen the front cover. cTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

Routine Maintenance 72 4 dPush down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. eUnpack the new toner cartridge. Hold the cartridge level with both hands and gently shake it from side to side several times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

Routine Maintenance 73 4 fPull off the protective cover. gPut the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically.

Routine Maintenance 74 4 hClean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from right to left and left to right several times. Note Be sure to return the tab to the home position (a) (1). If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe. iPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the machine. Close the front cover. Note DO NOT turn off the machines power switch or open the front cover until the Ready LED lights up. 1

Routine Maintenance 75 4 The printing operation varies depending on the machine setting: Default setting (Stop mode) The machine will stop printing until you replace the toner cartridge with a new one when the LEDs indicate REPLACE TONER. Continue mode To force the machine to continue printing after the LEDs indicate REPLACE TONER, press Go seven times to enter Continue mode (all the LEDs flash twice, and then the Ready LED turns on). Note • There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 12,000 pages. The actual number of pages that your drum will print may be significantly less than this estimate....
