1 1 1 Using the documentation 1 Thank you for buying a Brother machine! Reading the documentation will help you make the most of your machine. Symbols and conventions used in the documentation1 The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the documentation. General information1 BoldBold typeface identifies specific keys on the machine’s control panel, on the computer screen. ItalicsItalicized typeface emphasizes an important point or refers you to a related topic. Courier NewText in Courier New font identifies messages on the LCD of the machine. WARNING WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injuries. CAUTION CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injuries. IMPORTANT IMPORTANT indicates a potentially hazardous situation which may result in property-damage-only accidents or loss of product function. Notes tell you how you should respond to a situation that may arise or give tips about how the operation works with other features. Electrical Hazard icons alert you to possible electrical shock.
Chapter 1 2 Accessing the Advanced User’s Guide and Software User’s Guide 1 This Basic User’s Guide does not contain all the information about the machine such as how to use the advanced features for Copy, PhotoCapture Center ®, Printer and Scanner. When you are ready to learn detailed information about these operations, read the Advanced User’s Guide and Software User’s Guide that are on the Documentation CD-ROM. Viewing Documentation1 aTurn on your computer. Insert the Documentation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. For Windows ® users, go to stepc. Note (Windows® users) If the screen does not appear automatically, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click index.html. b(Macintosh users) Double-click the Documentation CD-ROM icon, and then double-click index.html. cClick your country. dPoint to your language, point to View Guide, and then click the guide you want to read.

Chapter 1 6 Control panel overview1 1 LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Displays messages on the screen to help you set up and use your machine. 2 Number of Copies Use this key to make multiple copies. 3 Menu keys: d or c Press d or c to move the selected area left or right on the LCD. a or b Press a or b to scroll through the menus and options. Clear Press to go back to the previous menu level. Menu Lets you access the main menu to program the machine. OK Lets you choose a setting.4 Start keys: Black Start Lets you start making copies in black & white. Also lets you start a scanning operation (in color or black & white, depending on the scanning setting in the ControlCenter software). Color Start Lets you start making copies in full color.
