WARNING Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the po ssibility of serious injury or even death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, fire or other hazards. Thes e precautions include, but are not limited to, the following: • Do not place the power cord near heat sources such as heaters or radiators. Also, do not excessively bend or otherwise damage the cord, or place heavy objects on it. • Only use the voltage specified as correct for the instrument. The required voltage is printed on the name plate of the instrument. • Use the specified adaptor (page 16) only. Using the wrong adaptor can result in damage to the instrument or overheating. • Check the electric plug periodically and remove any dirt or dust which may have accumulated on it. • This instrument contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the instrument or attempt to disassemble or modify the internal components in any way. If it should appear to be malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately and have it inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. • Do not expose the instrument to rain, use it near water or in damp or wet conditions, place on it any containers (such as vases, bottles or glasses) containing liquids which might spill into any openings. If any liquid such as water seeps into the instrument, turn off the power immediately and unplug the power cord from the AC outlet. Then h ave the instrument inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. • Never insert or remove an electric plug with wet hands. • Do not put burning items, such as candles, on the unit. A burning item may fall over and cause a fire. • When one of the following problems occur, immediately turn off the power switch and disconnect the electric plug from the outlet. Then have the device inspected by Yamaha service personnel. - The power cord or plug becomes frayed or damaged. - It emits unusual smells or smoke. - Some object has been dropped into the instrument. - There is a sudden loss of sound during use of the instrument. 5P-35 Owner’s Manual CAUTION Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of physical injury to you or others, or damage to the instrument or other property. These precautio ns include, but are not limited to, the following: • Do not connect the instrument to an electrical outlet using a multiple-connector. Doing so can result in lower sound quality, or possibly cause overheating in the outlet. • When removing the electric plug from the instrument or an outlet, always hold the plug itself and not the cord. Pulling by the cord can damage it. • Remove the electric plug from the outlet whe n the instrument is not to be used for extended periods of time, or during electrical storms. • Do not place the instrument in an unstable position where it might accidentally fall over. • Before moving the instrument, remove all connected cables, to prevent damage to the cables or injury to anyone who might trip over them. • When setting up the product, make sure that the AC outlet you are using is easily accessible. If some trouble or malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch and disconnect the plug from the outlet. Even when the power switch is turned off, electricity is still flowing to the product at the minimum level. When you are not using the product for a long time, make sure to unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. • Use only the stand specified for the instrument. When attaching the stand or rack, use the provided screws only. Failure to do so could cause damage to the internal components or result in the instrument falling over. • Before connecting the instrument to othe r electronic components, turn off the power for all components. Before turning the power on or off for all components, set all volume levels to minimum. • Be sure to set the volumes of all components at their minimum levels and gradually raise the volume controls wh ile playing the instrument to set the desired listening level. • Do not insert a finger or hand in any gaps on the instrument. • Never insert or drop paper, metallic, or other objects into the gaps on the panel or keyboard. This could cause physical injury to you or others, damage to the instrument or other property, or operational failure. • Do not rest your weight on, or place heavy objects on the instrument, and do not use excessive force on the buttons, switches or connectors. • Do not use the instrument/device or headphones for a long period of time at a high or uncomfortable volume level, since this can cause permanent hearing loss. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the ears, consult a physician. Always turn the power off when the instrument is not in use. Even when the [ ] (Standby/On) switch is in standby status (power lamp is off), electricity is still flowing to the instrument at the minimum level. When you are not using the instrument for a long time, make sure you unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. Notice To avoid the possibility of malfunction/ damage to the product, damage to data, or damage to other property, follow the notices below. Handling and Maintenance• Do not use the instrument in the vicinity of a TV, radio, stereo equipment, mobile phone, or other electric devices. Otherwise, the instrument, TV, or radio may generate noise. • Do not expose the instrument to excessive dust or vibrations, or extreme cold or heat (such as in direct sunlight, near a heater, or in a car during the day) to prevent the possibility of panel disfigura tion, damage to the internal components or unstable operation. (Verified operating temperature range: 5° – 40°C, or 41° – 104°F.) • Do not place vinyl, plastic or rubber objects on the instrument, since this might discolor the panel or keyboard. • When cleaning the instrument, use a soft, dry/dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use paint thinners, solvents, cleaning fluids, or chemical-impregnated wiping cloths. P-35 Owner’s Manual7 Setting Up 1Connect the AC power adaptor to the DC IN jack. 2Plug the AC power adaptor into an AC outlet. 3Press the [ ] (Standby/On) switch to turn on the power. The power lamp located to the left of the [ ] (Standby/On) switch lights up. To turn off the power, press this switch again. When you start playing, use the [MASTER VOL- UME] slider to adjust the volume of the entire key- board sound. Any pair of stereo headphones with a 1/4” stereo phone plug can be plugged in here for convenient monitoring. The speakers are automatically shut off when a plug is inserted into this jack. The [SUSTAIN] jack is for connecting the included footswitch, which works in the same way as a damper pedal on an acoustic piano. Also an optional FC3 foot pedal or FC4/FC5 footswitch can be connected to this jack. The FC3 lets you use the Half Pedal function. Half Pedal function If you are playing the piano with sustain and want a clearer, less muddled sound (especially in the bass register), let up on your foot from the pedal to half position or higher. Turning the Power On/Off • Use only the specified adaptor (page 16). Using the wrong adaptor can result in damage to the instrument or overheating. • Even when the [ ] (Standby/On) switch is in standby status (power lamp is off), electricity is still flowing to the instrument at the minimum level. When you are not using the instrument for a long time, make sure you unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. • Note that the power is automatically turned off if this instrument is not operated for 30 minutes . Using Headphones • To protect your hearing, avoid listening with the head- phones at a high volume level for long periods of time. Using a Footswitch • Do not press the footswitch when turning the power on. Doing this changes the recognized polarity of the footsw itch, resulting in reversed footswitch operation. • Make sure that power is OFF when connecting or disconnecting the foot- switch or pedal. P-35 Owner’s Manual8 Reference Selecting & Playing Voices To select the Grand Piano Voice: Simply press [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION] to instantly call up the Grand Piano 1 Voice--no matter what other Voice is called up or other settings are made. To select another Voice: While holding [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION], press one of the C0 – A0 keys. Voice List After selecting the desired Voice, play the keyboard. You can play Voices simultaneously across the entire range of the keyboard. 1Engage Dual. While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNC- TION], simultaneously press two keys from C0 – A0. The Voice assigned to the left side key is as Voice 1, while the Voice assigned to the right side key is as Voice 2. To shift the Octave for each Voice: While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNC- TION], press one of the F5 – A#5 keys. To adjust the Balance between two Voices: While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNC- TION], press the B5 key to decrease by one, C6 to increase by one, or C #6 to set to 0 (equal balance). The setting range is from -6 to +6. Settings above “0” increase the volume of Voice1, and vice versa. 2To exit from Dual, simply press [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION]. Selecting a Voice KeyVoice NameDescription C0GRAND PIANO 1 Recorded samples from a full concert grand piano. Perfect for classical compositions as well as any other style that requires acoustic piano. C#0GRAND PIANO 2 Clear piano with bright reverb. Good for pop- ular music. D0E. PIANO 1 An electronic piano sound created by FM synthesis. Good for standard popular music. D#0E. PIANO 2Vintage electric piano sound of hammer- struck metallic “tines.” Soft tone when played lightly, and an aggressive tone when played hard. E0PIPE ORGAN 1A typical pipe organ sound (8 feet + 4 feet + 2 feet). Good for sacred music from the Baroque period. F0PIPE ORGAN 2 This is the organ’s full coupler sound, often associated with Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue.” F#0STRINGS Spacious and large-scale string ensemble. Try combining this Voice with piano in DUAL. G0HARPSI- CHORD 1The definitive instrument for baroque music. Authentic harpsichord sound, with plucked strings, no touch response. G#0HARPSI- CHORD 2 Mixes the same Voice an octave higher for a more brilliant, dynamic tone. A0VIBRA- PHONE Played with relatively soft mallets. • To familiarize yourself with the characteri stics of the Voices, listen to the Demo Songs for each Voice (page 12). • You can shift the Octave as described in the next column (see “Voice 1”). Selecting & Playing Voices P-35 Owner’s Manual9 This function allows two different players to play the instrument, one on the left and the other on the right, over the same octave range. 1While holding down [GRAND PIANO/ FUNCTION], press the D3 key to engage Duo. The keyboard is divided into the two sections with the E3 key as the Split Point. 2One person should play the left section of the keyboard while the other plays the right. To shift the Octave for each Voice: Same as in Dual (page 8). Pedal function in Duo The Footswitch connected to the [SUSTAIN] jack affects both Right and Left sections. 3To exit from Duo, press the D3 key while holding [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION] again. This instrument features several Reverb Types that add extra depth and expression to the sound to create a realistic acoustic ambience. Although the appropriate Reverb Type is called up automatically when you select each of the Voices, you can change the Reverb Type. To select a Reverb Type: While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION], press one of the C5 – E5 keys. Reverb Type List To adjust Reverb Depth: While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION], press the A4 key to decrease by one, A#4 to increase by one, or B4 to reset to the default value (most suit- able value for the current Voice). The higher the value, the deeper the effect. The setting range is from 0 (no effect) – 10 (maximum depth). Playing Duo • The Split Point cannot be changed from E3. • If the keyboard is in Dual, engagi ng Duo will exit from Dual. The Voice 1 is used as the Voice of the entire keyboard. • Changing the Voice will exit from Duo. Split Point (E3) Left Voice (Voice 2) Right Voice (Voice 1)Equivalent to C3 (Center) Equivalent to C3 (Center) D3 NOTE Adding Variations to the Sound – Reverb • In Dual, the Reverb Type for Voice 1 is preferentially called up. If “OFF” is assigned to Voice 1, the Reverb Type for the Voice 2 is called up. KeyReverb Ty p eDescription C5 Room Adds a continuous reverb effect to the sound, similar to the acoustic reverbera- tion you would hear in a room. C #5 Hall1 For a bigger reverb sound. This effect simulates the natural reverberation of a small-size concert hall. D5 Hall2 For a truly spacious reverb sound. This effect simulates the natural reverberation of a large concert hall. D #5Stage Simulates the reverb of a stage environ- ment. E5 Off No effect is applied. NOTE E5 C5 B4 (Default) A4 (-1) A #4 (+1)

While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION], press one of the A2 – C3 keys.You can shift the pitch of the entire keyboard up or down in semitone in order to facilitate playing in diffi- cult key signatures, or to easily match the pitch of the keyboard to the range of a singer or other instruments. For example, if “+5” is selected, playing key C pro- duces pitch F, letting you play a song of F major as though it were in C major. To transpose the pitch down: While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION], press the F6 key to decrease by 1 semitone. To transpose the pitch up: While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION], press the F #6 key to increase by 1 semitone. To restore the original pitch: While holding down [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION], press the G6 key. Setting the Touch Sensitivity KeyTouch SensitivityDescription A2 Fixed The volume level does not change at all regardless of whether you play the key- board soft or hard. A #2Soft The volume level does not change much when you play the keyboard soft or hard. B2 Medium This is the standard piano touch response (default setting). C3 Hard The volume level changes very widely from pianissimo to fortissimo to facilitate dynamic and dramatic expression. You have to hit the keys hard to produce a loud sound. • The touch sensitivity settings may have li ttle or no effect with the PIPE ORGAN and HARPSICHORD Voices, since these in struments are not normally respon- sive to keyboard dynamics.
