Transparencies • To avoid damaging the printer, use only 
transparencies designed for use in laser 
printers.
• Transparencies used in the printer must be able 
to withstand 180° C (356° F), the printer’s 
fusing temperature.
• Place them on a flat surface after removing 
them from the printer.
• Do not leave them in the paper tray for long 
periods of time. Dust and dirt may accumulate 
on them, resulting in spotty printing.
• To avoid smudging caused by fingerprints, 
handle them carefully.

Using the manual tray
The manual tray can hold special sizes and types of print media, such as 
transparency, postcard, note card, and envelope. It is useful for single 
page printing on special print media. 
To load paper in the manual tray:
1Load one sheet of paper with the side to be printed on facing up.
Depending on the print media type you are using, keep the 
following loading guidelines:
• Envelopes: Flap side down and with the stamp area on the top left 
side.
• Transparencies: Print side...

Do not force too much, or the paper will bend, which could result in 
a paper jam or skew.

8 Maintenance

Cleaning the printer
During the printing process, paper, toner, and dust particles can 
accumulate inside the printer. This buildup can cause print quality

4With a dry lint-free cloth, wipe away any dust and spilled toner from 
the toner cartridge area and the toner cartridge cavity.
5Gently swab the long strip of glass (LSU) inside the top of the 
cartridge and check for dirt or dust.
Caution
• While cleaning the inside of the printer, be careful not to reach 
too far into the printer. The fuser area may be hot.

Maintaining the toner cartridge
Toner cartridge storage
To get the most from the toner cartridge, keep the following guidelines in 
mind:
• Do not remove the toner cartridge from its package until ready for 
use.
• Do not refill the toner cartridge. The printer warranty does not cover 
damage caused by using a refilled cartridge.
• Store toner cartridge in the same environment as the printer.
• To prevent damage to the toner cartridge, do not expose it to light for 
more than a few minutes....

Replacing the toner cartridge
When the toner is completely empty or the toner cartridge reachde the 
end of its life span:
•The Error LED blinks red.
At this stage, the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. For toner 
cartridge ordering information, see page 7.1.
1Open the front cover.
2Pull the old toner cartridge out.
3Remove the new toner cartridge from its bag.
4Thoroughly shake the cartridge 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner 
evenly inside the cartridge.
