    5Loading Documents to
    Scan
Note: Always remove any staples or paper clips from documents before inserting them into the scanner. Staples
and paper clips can jam the feed mechanism and scratch the internal components. Also remove any labels,
stickers, or Post-It™ notes that may come off during the scanning process and get stuck in the scanner. Misuse as
described here will void your scanner’s warranty.
    Preparing Documents for Scanning
    • Fan the documents to make sure all pages in the stack are separated.
    • Bend and then flatten the document stack to make sure the horizontal edges are aligned to help prevent
paper from skewing while being pulled through the scanner.
    • Pinch the ends to align the leading edges slantwise to help prevent multiple pages from being fed through at
    a single time.

    Supported Document Types
You can scan the following types of documents and cards with this scanner.
    • The maximum amount of paper in the input tray should not exceed the maximum stack thickness indicated
    on the paper guides.
This is approximately 350 sheets of 20 lb (75–80 g/m
    2) new printer paper.
    •Document size
    – Minimum size (width x length) – 1.9 x 2.8 inches (48 x 71 mm)
    – Maximum size (width x length) – 11.89 x 100 inches (302 mm x 2540 mm)
We recommend scanning one page at a time when the documents you are scanning are longer than
17 inches (432 mm). Please refer to scanning with Manual feed mode in the TWAIN interface for
instructions on scanning one page at a time.
    • Paper thickness
    – Auto mode: 5 to 42 lbs (19 ~ 157 g/m
    2)
    – Thick mode: 42 to 56 lbs (157 ~ 209 g/m
    2)
    – Straight path: 0.2 to 0.6mm (7.9 ~ 23.6 mils)
    Documents to Avoid Scanning
The documents in this list can be scanned, but please note that scanning documents of this type will reduce the
life of the scanner. Maintenance will be required more often and replaceable parts will wear faster. These types
of documents will jam more frequently and damage to the original documents may occur. If you do choose to
scan these document types, do not scan large batches. This type of use is not covered under the scanner warranty
and alters replacement parts life expectancy.
We recommend you limit the amount or completely avoid scanning documents that are in this list.
    • Curled, wrinkled or folded documents may cause paper jams or multiple pages being fed through the scanner
    at one time.
    • Perforated or punched paper that could tear when the separation roller engages.
    • Coated paper or photographs where the coating can flake off during scanning and leave residue in the
    scanner.
    • Extremely smooth, shiny, or highly textured paper may cause the paper feed rollers to slip across the page
and cause the scanner to report a paper jam.
    • Carbonless copy paper may tear while being fed through the scanner and the pressure of the rollers may
leave streaks on the page. The chemical coating on this paper will rub off on the rollers during the scan
process, increasing the frequency of miss-feeds and paper jams.
    • Partially transparent paper such as tracing paper as any images from the opposite side of the page or black
background will appear in the scanned images.

    Unsupported Document Types
Do not scan the following types of documents as they may cause damage to the scanner.
    • Items outside of the specified supported sizes, thickness, and weight defined in this document.
    • Non-rectangular or irregularly shaped paper will cause the scanner to detect and report document skew
    errors or paper jams.
    • Carbon paper that will leave residue in the scanner and on the rollers that will transfer to the next set of
    documents scanned.
    • Documents with hard items attached such as paper clips, binder clips, and staples.
    • Documents with wet ink or white-out.
    • Thermal or photosensitive paper.
    • Overhead projector sheets, plastic film, camera film, and any other type of transparent or partially
    transparent plastic item.
    • Documents that have been glued together.
    • Cloth or metallic sheets.
    Select the Paper Feeding Options
There are paper feed options that you can adjust using the scanner control panel. Adjust these options based on
the type of documents you are scanning.
Hopper—the up and down arrows adjust the height of the input tray based on the
amount of paper in the input tray. The scanner will automatically raise the tray during
scanning, but if you regularly scan small batches of paper, you may want to keep the
input tray higher to save time adjusting the height automatically while scanning.
ADF—this button changes the scanner from automatic feeding (first option) to manual
feeding (second option). When automatic feeding is selected, the scanner
automatically raises the input tray during scanning. When manual feeding is selected,
the input tray is raised to the top for feeding one page, or stacks of very few pages, at a
time. When you are using a scanning interface with a manual feed mode option, switch
the scanner to manual feed mode as well.
Thickness—this option adjusts how close the rollers are to each other. Tap this button
to cycle through the options and select the option that matches the thickness of the
    paper you are scanning.

    Select the Paper Path
Scanned documents can be exited to the output tray in the front of the scanner or to the straight path tray in the
back of the scanner. The paper path is automatically switched when the straight path is opened or closed.
Note: follow these guidelines when using the straight path tray.
    • Use the straight path tray when you have set the paper thickness level to thick and documents being
scanned are from 0.2 to 0.6 mm (7.9–23.6 mils).
    • Make sure there is enough space in the back of the scanner for the paper to exit.

    6Scanning and
    Configuring OneTouch
Based on the recommended full installation of the scanner driver and the Visioneer OneTouch software,
OneTouch is your main scanning interface for using the scanner.
The OneTouch Button Panel, that you see on the computer screen, shows the pre-set function for each button
(such as Email) and the icon of the destination (called the Destination Application) where the images will be
    sent when scanning is finished.
    Default OneTouch Settings
When you installed the scanner, the software configured each OneTouch button with appropriate settings
consisting of: a Destination Application, a Scan Configuration, and a File Format. The button names, such as
Email or Copy, indicate the original factory settings for a button. You can change any of these settings. Please see
Changing the Button Settings on page 31 for instructions.
For example, the Email button is set up to scan documents then immediately attach them to a new email
message in your default email program. The email application will default to the email program specified in the
    internet options of Internet Explorer.
A folder icon for a button means that the button is set up to archive the scanned item. The scanner sends the
scanned image directly to a folder without opening the image first in a software application.
A question mark for a button means your computer does not have the appropriate software or hardware for the
    initial factory settings.
The OneTouch button panel shows which
application the button is configured to send
    images to.

such as Microsoft Word will not be available. The OneTouch OmniPage module is installed automatically when
you install Visioneer OneTouch from the installation disc.
Note: The default page size in each configuration is based on your computer’s Windows Measurement system
selection of U.S. (United States) or Metric units.
    • If U.S. is the selected measurement, the default page size in each profile will be based on the United States
standard paper sizes such as 8.5 x 11 inches.
    • If Metric is the selected measurement, the default page size in each profile is based on the ISO 216
standard and the majority of the profiles will default to A4.
