If a DVD is recorded with multilingual tracks,
you can select the language you want while
    playing the DVD.
If the DVD is recorded in multiple audio formats
(PCM, Dolby Digital, MPEG audio, or DTS),
you can select the audio format you want while
    playing the DVD.
With stereo CDs, VIDEO CDs, or MP3, you can
select the sound from the right or left channel
and listen to the sound of the selected channel
through both the right and left speakers (in this
case, the sound loses its stereo effect). For
example, when playing a disc containing a song
with the vocals on the right channel and the
instruments on the left channel, you can select
the left channel and hear only the instruments
    from both speakers.
    1Press DVD DISPLAY during playback.
    The Control Menu is displayed.
    2Press X/x to select (AUDIO),
    then press ENTER.

3Press X/x to select the desired audio
    signal.
    xWhen playing a DVD
Depending on the DVD, the choice of
    language varies.
When 4 digits are displayed, they represent
the language code. Refer to the language
code list on page 81 to see which language
the code represents. When the same
language is displayed two or more times,
the DVD is recorded in multiple audio
    formats.
xWhen playing a VIDEO CD, CD, or
    MP3
    The default setting is underlined.
     STEREO
    : The standard stereo sound
1/L: The sound of the left channel
    (monaural)
2/R: The sound of the right channel
    (monaural)
xWhen playing a Super Audio CD
In stop mode, depending on the Super
Audio CD, the choice of settings varies.
     MULTI: The disc has multi-channel
    playback area.
2CH: The disc has 2 channel playback
    area.
CD: When you want to play the disc as
    a conventional CD.
    Note
Not all discs give you the three choices above
when in Super Audio CD playback. It all depends

    Tips
You can select [AUDIO] directly by pressing
AUDIO. Each time you press the button, the item
    changes.
You can check the audio information, such as the
language or sound channel of a disc in the front panel

    Displaying the audio
    information of the disc
    (DVD only)
When you select [AUDIO], the channels being
played are displayed on the screen.
For example, in Dolby Digital format, multiple
signals ranging from monaural to 5.1 channel
signals can be recorded on a DVD. Depending
on the DVD, the number of recorded channels
may differ.* [PCM,] [MPEG], [DTS], or [DOLBY
    DIGITAL] is displayed.
For [DOLBY DIGITAL], the channels in the
playing track are displayed numerically as
    follows:
    For Dolby Digital 5.1 ch:
    The display examples are as
    follows:
    PCM (stereo)
     Dolby Surround
     Dolby Digital 5.1ch
    DTS
    Tips
When the signal contains surround signal
components such as LS, RS, or S, the surround effect
    is enhanced.
If you play MPEG AUDIO sound tracks, the system
    outputs PCM (stereo) signals.

You can take advantage of surround sound
simply by selecting one of system’s pre-
programmed sound fields. They bring the
exciting and powerful sound of movie theaters
    into your home.
To select sound field, press AUTO FORMAT
DIRECT or MODE on the remote repeatedly
until the sound field you want appears in the
    front panel display.
    Automatic decoding of the
    audio input signal (AUTO
    FORMAT DIRECT AUTO)
    The auto decoding function automatically
detects the type of audio signal being input
(Dolby Digital, DTS, or standard 2 channel
stereo) and performs the proper decoding if
necessary. This mode presents the sound as it
    was recorded/encoded, without adding any
    effects (e.g. reverberation).
However, if there are no low frequency signals
(Dolby Digital LFE, etc.), it will generate a low
frequency signal for output to the subwoofer.
Press AUTO FORMAT DIRECT on the
    remote repeatedly until “A.F.D. AUTO”
appears in the front panel display.
    Using only the front speaker
    and subwoofer (2 CHANNEL
    STEREO)
This mode outputs the sound from the front left
and right speakers and subwoofer. Standard two
channel (stereo) sources completely bypass the
sound field processing. Multi channel surround
formats are downmixed to two channels.
This allows you to play any source using only
the front left and right speakers and subwoofer.
Press MODE on the remote repeatedly until
“2CH ST” appears in the front panel
    display.

from two-channel sources. This mode performs
Pro Logic decoding to the input signal and
output to front, center, and surround speakers.
    Meanwhile, the surround channel becomes
    monaural.
    xAUTO FORMAT DIRECT PRO LOGICII
    MOVIE/MUSIC
Dolby Pro LogicII produces five full-bandwidth
output channels from two-channel sources. This
is done using an advanced, high-purity matrix
surround decoder that extracts the spatial
properties of the original recording without
adding any new sounds or tonal colorations.
