This is normal. l When the portable MD is turned on or operating, the battery will not be charged. To the DC IN 5V socketAC 230-240V 50/60Hz Charge mode Do not force the battery cover open too far. 1 Insert the rechargeable battery. 2 Move the Charge/Operation switch to charge mode. 3 Place the portable MD into the battery charger and connect the AC adaptor.

Do not charge a battery (nickel-cadmium, alkaline, etc.) other than that specified.lDo not remove the outer cover of the re- chargeable battery. It may cause heat gen- eration, fire, or explosion.lDo not dip the battery in water, do not dis- pose of it in a fire, and do not take it apart.lIf the rechargeable battery terminal is dirty, charging may not start. In such a case, wipe off the dirt with a dry cloth.lDo not disassemble the battery. About Power Source : continuedAbout the liquid crystal display (LCD)The condition of the portable MD will be shown on the LCD when inserting it into the battery charger. Display Conditions Scrolling lCharging. Turns offlThe charging is complete.lWhen the portable MD is not in- serted correctly to the battery charger, or Rechargeable terminal is dirty, it may not be possible to charge the battery. (Wipe the terminal by cot- ton swab.)lRefreshing (see page 41). The unit checks and, if necessary, discharge the rechargeable bat- tery to recharge it automatically. (At this time battery indicator is flashing.) About charging timeAfter about 3.5 hours have passed, Ò Ó will go out. The battery is charged up to 95% if it is completely discharged. Notes:lCharge the battery within the range of 5°C - 35°C (41°F - 95°F).lThe unit can be left in the charging state after it is com- pleted.lIf the MiniDisc unit is not to be used for some time, remove the battery. Caution: lIf the Charge/Operation switch is not set to operation mode, no operation is possible. (See ÒHow to use the Charge/Operation switchÓ, page 11) lWhen the unit is not in use for extended periods, re- move the AC adaptor from the wall socket. lInsert the plugs firmly. Note: When power failure occurs whilst playing back using the AC adaptor, disconnect the adaptor from the outlet. Other- wise, playback may start automatically when the power returns. When using the alkaline batteries, make sure the recharge- able battery is inserted. Caution: lDo not use rechargeable batteries (nickel-cadmium battery etc.) in the battery case. To cancel the hold mode: Move the HOLD switch away from the safety posi- tion (the opposite direction of the arrow). lIf the hold function is active whilst the power is turned off, the power cannot be turned on by mistake and the battery will not be drained.l If the alkaline batteries are inserted or the AC adaptor is connected, you can set this function even when the power is turned off. To cancel the hold modePress and hold down for 2 seconds or more whilst the unit is in the hold mode.l ÒHOLD OFFÓ will be shown Hold Release Press the ¥ n / ÐHOLD button for 2 seconds or more.Move the HOLD switch to the safety position (direction indicated by the arrow).
