41 Overview Front View Before You Start! Optional items may be changed or may not be provided depending on the computer model. The actual color and appearance of the computer may differ from the pictures used in this guide. 1Camera Lens (Optional) Using this lens, you can take still pictures and record video. 2Power ButtonTurns the computer on and off. 3KeyboardA device to enter data by pressing the keys. 4Touchpad/ Touchpad ButtonsThe touchpad and touchpad buttons provide functions similar to the mouse ball and buttons. 5Multi Card Slot (Optional) A card slot that supports SD Card, SDHC, MMC and SDXC cards. SDXC cards may not be supported depending on the product specifi cations. 6Status IndicatorsShows the operating status of the computer. 4 Status Indicators 1Caps LockThis turns on when the Caps Lock key is pressed allowing capital letters to be typed without holding the Shift button down. 2HDD/ODDThis tuns on when the hard disk or ODD is being accessed. 3Wireless LANThis turns on when the wireless LAN is operating. 4Charge StatusThis shows the power source and the battery charge status. Green: When the battery is fully charged or the battery is not installed. Amber: When the battery is being charged. Off: When the computer is running on battery power without being connected to AC adapter. 5Power This shows the computer operating status. On: When the computer is operating. 43 Right View 1ExpressCard Slot (Optional) Install the Express card into this slot. 2CD Drive(ODD) (Optional)Plays CD or DVD titles. Since an ODD(Optical Disk Drive) is optional, the installed drive depends on the computer model. 3USB Port You can connect USB devices to the USB port such as a keyboard/mouse, digital camera, etc. 4Security Lock Port You can connect a Kensington lock to the Security Lock Port to prevent the computer from being stolen. Either type A or B is provided depending on the model. ► Model A 1Modem Port (Optional)A port to which a telephone cable is connected to in order to dial up to the Internet. 2CD Drive(ODD) (Optional)Plays CD or DVD titles. 44 Left View 1DC Jack A jack to connect the AC adapter that supplies power to the computer. 2Wired LAN Port Connect the Ethernet cable to this port. 3Fan VentsThe internal heat of the computer is emitted through these holes.If the vents are blocked the computer may overheat. Avoid blocking the vents as this may be dangerous. 4Monitor Port A port used to connect a monitor, TV or projector supporting a 15pin D-SUB interface. 5Digital Video/Audio Port (HDMI) (Optional) You can connect an HDMI cable to this port. Using this port, you can enjoy digital video and audio on the TV. 6 eSATA/USB Common Port or Chargeable USB Port (Optional) An eSATA /USB combination port or chargeable USB port is provided. You can distinguish the ports using the fi gure ( or ) printed on the port of the product. eSATA /USB Common Port : This port can be used to connect a USB or eSATA device. Windows XP does not support eSata. Chargeable USB: You can charge USB devices through the USB port even when the computer is turned off. Charging a device through a Chargeable USB takes longer than using a regular charger. Press the F2 key when the Samsung logo appears in the booting sequence to enter the BIOS Setup, select Advanced > USB Charge In Sleep Mode , and set it to Enable. 47 Turning the Computer On and Off Turning the computer on 1 Install the battery and connect the AC adapter. 2 Lift the LCD panel up. 3 Press the Power button to turn the computer on. 4 Power button LED is lit while the computer is turned on. If you press and release the Power button on the computer when it is on, the computer enters Sleep mode. When running the computer on battery power, the LCD brightness is dimmed automatically to save battery power. Press the Fn+ key to increase the LCD brightness. When turning the computer on for the fi rst time, the Register Windows screen appears. You can use the computer after registering your user information. LED
48 Turning the computer off Since the procedures to turn the computer off may differ depending on the installed operating system, please turn the computer off according to the procedures for the purchased operating system. 1 Click the Start button on the taskbar. 2 ▶ For Windows 7 Cl ick Shut down to shut down the computer. 1 2 Save all your data before clicking on Shut down. ▶ For Windows Vista Cl ick on Start > and then click on Shut Down as shown in the figure below to shut the c omputer down. Power Button1 23 Using the Power button in Windows Vista For Windows Vista, the Power button is set to power saving mode. Therefore, if you click Start > Power button , the computer enters power saving mode . T o shut down the computer by clicking this icon, refer to the descriptions for Setting up Start menu power button of the Control Panel.
49 ▶ For Windows XP 1 Click the Start button on the taskbar. 2 Click Turn Off Computer . 3 Click Turn Off . If the system cannot be shut down due to a system error, turn it off by pressing and holding the Power Button for a minimum of 4 seconds. Please note that turning the computer off by this method may cause a system problem. Thereafter, when turning the computer back on, the disk checking program may launch to check for and correct any disk errors.
