AerobicExercise Ifyourgoalistostrengthenyourcardiovascularsystem, yourexercisemustbeaerobic.Aerobicexerciseis activitythatrequireslargeamountsofoxygenforpro- longedpededsoftime.ThisIncreasesthedemandon thehearttopumpbloodtothemuscles,andonthe lungstooxygenatetheblood.Foraerobicexercise, adjustthespeedandInclineuntilyourheartrateisnear thehighestnumberinyourtrainingzone. HOWTOMEASUREYOUHEARTRATE EXERCISEINTENSITY Whetheryourgoalistobumfatortostrengthenyour cardiovascularsystem,thekeytoachievingthedesired resultsistoexercisewiththeproperIntensity.The properIntensitylevelcanbefoundbyusingyourheart rateasaguide.Thechartatthebottomofthispage showsrecommendedheartratesforfatburningand aerobicexercise. Tofindtheproperheartrateforyou,firstfindyourage atthetopofthechart(agesareroundedofftothe nearesttenyears).Next,findthethreenumbersbelow yourage.Thethreenumbersdefineyourtraining zone.Thelowesttwonumbersarerecommended heartratesforfatburning,andthehighestnumberis therecommendedheartrateforaerobicexercise.
