    To install a SDRAM DIMM: 
    1 
    Unpack the SDRAM DIMM(s).  
    Do not touch the connector edge on the SDRAM DIMM.

    Place the printer controller board on a stable surface.

    Unlatch the lever on the side of the empty socket (J2 or 
    J3).

    Ensure that the notches on the SDRAM DIMM are 
    aligned inside the empty socket.
    5a) Slide the SDRAM DIMM into the empty socket (J2 or 
    J3) at a 45-degree angle and push the DIMM into the 
    socket.
    b) Snap the lever(s) into place.
    6Replace the printer controller board in the printer.

    board” on page 193.

    Installing network cards
    The following section explains how to install either an Ethernet (KX-PNBC5) 
    or Token Ring (KX-PNBC6) network card (illustrated below) on the 
    KX-P8420. It also describes how to configure the printer Setup when the 
    new network card has been installed. 
    To install the network card you will need to do the following:
    •Remove the printer controller board from the back of the printer.
    •Install the network card on the printer controller board.
    •Replace the printer controller board.
    •Configure the printer’s network setup.
    IMPORTANT:
    •To avoid electric shock ensure your hands are dry before touching the 
    printer’s power plug.
    •Ethernet (KX-PNBC5) or Token Ring (KX-PNBC6) network card
    CAUTIONS:
    •Do not drop or bend the network card.
    •Do not touch the connector of the network card.
    •Protect the network card from static electricity by keeping it in its anti-
    static package until you are ready to install it.
    •Avoid exposing the network card to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or 
    humidity.
    Before you begin this procedure, remove the printer controller board from 
    the printer. For instructions, see “Removing and replacing the printer 
    controller board” on page 193.

    Installing a network card:
    1Place the printer controller board on a stable surface.
    2a) Use a flat blade screwdriver to gently remove the 
    connector cover on the side of the network card 
    connector.
    b) Remove the two screws that secure the slot cover on 
    the front bracket, then remove the slot cover.
    Save the screws.

    3a) Align the network card into the cutout in the front 
    bracket.

    connector.
    c) Secure the network card to the front bracket using 
    the two screws you removed from the slot cover.

    Margins and print area 
    When the image is printed on the media, the image (print area) is a bit 
    smaller than the media size. You may need to adjust the page margins in 
    the application software to match the print area. 
    The following table shows the page sizes, the largest print areas, and the 
    margins for the media sizes supported on this printer.

    The printer is designed to work well with most types of paper. However, 
    differences in paper may have significant effects on the quality of the print 
    or the reliability of paper handling. It is strongly recommended that you

    n Types of paper to avoid
    •
    Extremely smooth or shiny paper or paper that is highly textured
    •Letterhead imprinted with low temperature or thermography. These 
    materials may transfer onto the fusing roller and cause damage. 
    Any pre-printed paper should use inks compatible with 200°C (392°F) for 
    0.1 second.
    •Damaged or wrinkled paper, or paper with irregularities such as tabs, 
    staples, etc.
    •Multipart forms or carbonless paper
    •Paper with a 25% or more cotton and/or fiber content
    •Ink jet paper (It may transfer onto the fuser roller and cause damage.)
    n Two-sided printing (Duplex printing)
    Two-sided printing is possible by using the multi-purpose tray. However, 
    you should not expect the same print quality and reliability that you get with 
    one-sided printing. We strongly recommend that you follow the guidelines 
    below.
    •Do not load more than 50 sheets in the multi-purpose tray.
    •Before loading paper in the multi-purpose tray, adjust it so that the edges 
    of the media are lightly touching the media guides of the multi-purpose 
    tray.
    •Use heavier paper, at least 95 to 165 g/m2 (28 to 44 lbs. Bond) for reliable 
    feed. Do not load a thin sheet of paper in the multi-purpose tray. It may 
    cause a paper jam.
    •It is strongly suggested to use color laser bond paper.
    •Use multi-purpose tray for second side printing.
    •Avoid printing photograph or graphic in solid color to prevent paper 
    jamming. It may cause a damage to the printer.
    •Before printing on the first side, set the unprintable area [at least 15 mm 
    (0.59) in length] on the top of paper. (See below.)

    n Transparencies and labels
    You may also print on transparencies and labels that are made for the 
    printer. Panasonic has tested and found that the following work 
    satisfactorily:

    Labels:AVERY 5163, AVERY 5164, AVERY 5165, Avery L7163, 
    Avery L7165, Avery L7166, Avery L7167, Avery L7168, Avery L7169
    •Re-using transparencies that have been fed through the printer once (for 
    example, after jams or if the transparency is ejected without being 
    printed) can reduce the life of the consumables and paper path 
    components.
    •When using transparencies, if the print quality is poor, print on the other 
    side.
    •With any label stock, the labels must completely cover the backing 
    material.

    n Envelopes
    It is recommended that you print in black text only and purchase high quality 
    #10 laser envelopes with diagonal seams, as shown in the diagram below:
    High quality envelopes have the following characteristics:
    •A thin, sharply creased leading edge
    •Paper weight of 90 g/m 2 (24 lbs.)
    •Flat, free of curls, wrinkles, nicks, etc.
    NOTE:
    •Wrinkle may occur in some case, even if high quality envelopes are used.
    It is not recommended that you use envelopes with any of the following 
    characteristics (using these may result in paper jams):
    •Irregularly shaped envelopes
    •Envelopes with curls, wrinkles, nicks, twists, dog-ears or other damage
    •Envelopes with side seam construction
