191 Care and Maintenance 3Insert each toner cartridge into a plastic bag and seal the end of the bag tightly. 4Repeat steps 1 (b) through 3 for each toner cartridge. To finish repacking the printer: 1Wipe off any loose toner in and around the printer. NOTE: •If a toner vacuum is available, it is the best tool for cleaning spilled toner. Do not use a standard office vacuum; the toner will not be retained by typical vacuum dust collectors. 2Raise the output tray and secure it to the printer with adhesive tape. 3Secure the front door, the multi-purpose tray and the left side door to the printer with adhesive tape. If you don’t have a 2nd Cassette Feeder, go to step 6 on next page.
192 Care and Maintenance 4If you have a 2nd Cassette Feeder, lift the printer up and away from the 2nd Cassette Feeder. SAFETY CAUTION: •The printer weighs approximately 41.7 kg {91.9 lbs.} and the 2nd Cassette Feeder weighs approximately 14.3 kg {31.5 lbs.}. Observe standard precautions for lifting heavy objects. 5Repack the 2nd Cassette Feeder in its original shipping box. 6Repack any other accessories in their original shipping boxes. 7Repack the printer in the original shipping box. Each slot can support a 16 MB or 32 MB SDRAM DIMM. • Ethernet (KX-PNBC5) or Token Ring (KX-PNBC6) network card (page 202) You must remove the printer controller board from the back of the KX-P8420 in order to install or replace the hard disk, add or replace memory, or install a Token Ring or Ethernet network card. Removing and replacing the printer controller board To remove the printer controller board: 1 Turn the printer OFF, unplug the power cord and disconnect any cables connected to the connectors on the back of the printer. 2 Loosen the two thumbscrews that secure the printer controller board to the back of the printer, using a cross- point head (+) screwdriver.
194 Options 3 Carefully pull the printer controller board out of its slot in the printer. For instructions on installing printer options see: • “Installing a hard disk drive” on page 196 • “Installing additional memory” on page 199 • “Installing network cards” on page 202 Printer controller board
195 Options To replace the printer controller board: 1 Align the printer controller board with the groove on the back of the printer and carefully slide it back inside the printer. 2 Tighten the two thumbscrews on the printer controller board that you loosened earlier, using a cross-point head (+) screwdriver. 3 Plug in the power cord and reconnect any cables to the back of the printer.
