183 Care and Maintenance Some operation errors cause the error indicator to blink and printing to stop. A message will be displayed on the front panel until the problem is fixed. If the front panel message includes the instruction, Call for Service, contact an authorized service representative. In addition, if the following conditions occur, turn off and unplug the printer from the outlet and contact a qualified service representative: •The power cord or plug is damaged or frayed. •Liquid has been spilled into the printer. •The printer has been exposed to rain or water. •The printer does not operate normally though the operating instructions are being followed. Adjust only those controls that are described in the operating instructions; improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work to restore the printer to normal operation. 184 Care and Maintenance Repacking It is highly recommended that you keep the original carton and ALL packing materials. Should you need to transport or ship your printer, please follow these instructions. SAFETY CAUTION: •The printer weighs about 48.2 kg {106.2 lbs.}. It must be handled by two people. NOTES: •Should you need to send your printer for service, consult your reseller first or Panasonic. •Please use the original carton and all of the original packing materials. •If you do not have the packing for the imaging unit and the transfer unit: contact Panasonic for packaging. •Improper repacking of the printer may result in a service charge to remove spilled toner. •Since the printer uses dry toner, extreme care must be taken when handling. The printer should be handled in the upright (vertical) position. Material required: •Original cartons and packing materials •Newspaper or drop cloth •Shipping tape and scissors
185 Care and Maintenance To prepare the printer for repacking: 1Turn off the printer; remove the power cord and all interface cables. 2Remove the media tray(s) from the printer; remove the media from the tray(s). 3Press down on a media tray’s metal plate. Place the cardboard packing material into the media tray. 4Reinsert the media tray into the printer; use adhesive tape to secure the tray to the printer. 5If you have other media trays, repack them for shipping or storage in their original shipping boxes.
186 Care and Maintenance 6a) Open the printer’s front door. b) Loosen the two thumbscrews by turning them counterclockwise. c) Turn the lower green lever 180° counterclockwise. 7a) Grasping the front green handle, slide the unit out until it catches. b) Lift up the green handle on the left and pull the imaging unit out of the printer. IMPORTANT: •Do not touch the green surface (the right side) or the black belt (the under side). Finger prints may affect the print quality. SAFETY CAUTION: •The imaging unit weighs approximately 6.5 kg {14.3 lbs.}. Always use the handles when lifting it. b abc a b Green surface Black belt
187 Care and Maintenance 8Wrap the imaging unit with a protective black plastic sheet. CAUTION:CAUTION: •Do not expose the imaging unit to light for more than 45 seconds to avoid damage. 9On the imaging unit, turn the upper lever 90° counterclockwise; this is necessary to protect the imaging unit during shipment.

189 Care and Maintenance 12a) Push in on green tabs to unlock the cover. b) Raise the cover until it catches in the open position. 13a) Rotate the transfer unit’s green handles up. b) Lift out the transfer unit. 14Place the transfer unit on newspaper or drop cloth. Rotate the handles down and wrap the transfer unit with a piece of paper and adhesive tape. NOTE: •Do not touch or bump the roller: it can damage the roller. a b a a b
190 Care and Maintenance 15Install the plastic cover and insert the transfer unit into a plastic bag and seal the end tightly. Install the transfer unit into the packaging. To pack the toner cartridges: 1a) Open the right side door. b) Remove a toner cartridge.
