Color Calibration Color adjustment The printer’s color adjustment feature provides additional creative control over printer’s color production. The color adjustment screens, accessible via the front panel, allow you to override the printer’s current toner density and brightness settings. Using the color adjustment controls, you can also increase or decrease the brightness of an image, or you can increase or decrease the density of each the following colors: red, yellow, green, cyan, blue or magenta. For example, you may choose to make the blues in an image look surreal by increasing the density of the blue and the cyan in the image, and increasing the brightness setting. Chapter 8 144Care and Maintenance Cleaning Periodic cleaning of the printer is recommended, depending on the environment in which the printer is used. You should clean the printer: •At least once a month •When the printer experiences frequent media jams •When print quality starts to deteriorate To clean the outside of the printer: 1Turn the power OFF. 2Clean all the covers with a soft cloth, using any mild commercial cleaner. CAUTION: •Do not use benzine, thinner, aerosol cleaners, or any abrasive powder. NOTE: •When using isopropyl alcohol with a lint-free cloth, make sure that the alcohol is at least 90% pure, obtainable from your local pharmacy. (Do not use rubbing alcohol; it can damage the printer.) To clean the paper-pick rollers: 1Slide the media tray out (you do not have to remove it) to allow access to the paper-pick rollers. 2Open the left side door:
Care and Maintenance 3 Use the green handles to pull out the paper feeder. 4 Gently rotate the paper-pick rollers 180° (the paper-pick rollers are D-shaped) and wipe them with a lint-free cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol. 5 a ) Reinsert the paper feeder. b ) Close the left side door. a b
Care and Maintenance 6 Slide the media tray back into place. NOTE: • If you have a 2nd Cassette Feeder, you may also need to clean the rollers for the middle and lower media trays, which are accessed through the lower left side door. To clean the home sensor: If your printer panel displays PRINTER ERROR 30 , clean the home sensor inside the printer. 1 Open the printer’s front door. 2 Remove the color imaging unit. a ) Loosen the two thumbscrews by turning them counterclockwise. b ) Turn the lower green lever 180° counterclockwise. a b a
Care and Maintenance 3 a ) Grasping the front green handle, slide the color imaging unit out until it catches. b ) Lift up the left green handle. Pull the color imaging unit out of the printer and cover it to protect it from light exposure. IMPORTANT: • Do not touch the green surface (the right side) or the black belt (the underside). Finger prints may affect the print quality. SAFETY CAUTION: • The color imaging unit weighs approximately 6.5 k g {14.3 lbs.}. Always use the handles when lifting it. CAUTIONS: • Do not expose the color imaging unit to artificial light for more than 45 seconds; or you may damage the unit. Never expose it to direct sunlight. • Do not leave the printer’s front door open for an extended period of time (for example, several hours). 4 Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the slot of the sensor. a bGreen surface Black belt Sensor Slot

Care and Maintenance User replaceable components When the printer panel indicates that a supply needs to be replaced, make sure that you have replacement supplies on hand. The printer may continue to print until the supply is completely used up; but then it stops until you replace the indicated supply. * 1 These figures are based on an average of 5% coverage of the printable area and standard density for any one color (refer to Example A below left: Monochrome 5% coverage). 4 colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) are used for full color print. The frequency of replacement will vary, depending on the complexity of the prints and the percentage of coverage of each color and print density. Example B below right is the case of full color print. The percentage of coverage of each color is as follows. Cyan: 40%, Magenta: 22%, Yellow: 35%, Black: 20% If you continuously print with this setting, the average life of the Color Imaging Unit will be shortened to about 2,500 pages. When replacing the fuser unit, replace the oil supply roll as well. Do not insert the used oil supply roll into the new fuser unit; it may damage the new fuser unit.
