•Continuing to charge the battery af ter it is fully charged can impair 
battery performance.

sensitivity; the above graph assu mes an ISO sensitivity of ISO 
100 equivalent.
 When matrix metering is used, values over 
16 1/3EV are reduced to 16 1/3EV.

Troubleshooting
The camera is on but does not respond: Wait for recording to end. If the 
problem persists, turn the camera off. If the camera does not turn off, 
remove and reinsert the battery or, if you are using an AC adapter, 
disconnect and reconnect the AC adapter.

Camera takes time to turn on: Delete files or folders.
Shutter-release disabled : 
• Memory card is locked (SD cards only;  022), full, or not inserted 
( 0 14).
• Release locked  is selected for Custom Setting f11 ( Slot empty release 
lock ; 0 354) and no memory card is inserted ( 014).
• Aperture ring for CPU lens not lock ed at highest f-number (does not 
apply to type G and E lenses).
 If B is displayed in the control panel,

Can not select focus point:
• Unlock focus selector lock ( 094).
• Auto-area AF or face-priority AF  selected for AF-area mode; choose 
another mode ( 040, 90).
• Camera is in playback mode ( 0235).
• Menus are in use ( 024).
• Press shutter-release button halfway to start standby timer ( 034).
Can not select AF mode :
• Rotate focus-mode selector to  AF (0 87).
• Select  No restrictions  for Custom Setting a12 ( Autofocus mode

Live view ends unexpectedly or does not start: Live view may end automatically 
to prevent damage to the camera’s internal circuits if:
• The ambient temperature is high 
• The camera has been used for extended periods in live view or to 
record movies 
• The camera has been used in continuous release modes for extended 
periods
If live view does not start when you press the  a button, wait for the 
internal circuits to cool and then try again.
 Note that the camera may 
feel warm to the touch, but...

Smudges appear in photographs: Clean front and rear lens elements. If 
problem persists, perform image sensor cleaning ( 0445).
Colors are unnatural :
• Adjust white balance to match light source ( 0148).

NEF (RAW) image is not played back: Photo was taken at image quality of NEF

“Tall” (portrait) orientation photos are di splayed in “wide” (landscape) orientation :

Can not select photo for printing: NEF (RAW ) and TIFF photos can not be 
printed by direct USB connection. Transfer photos to computer and 
print using ViewNX 2 (supplied) or Capture NX-D (available for

NEF (RAW) processing  (0 399).
