179 i Select On to reduce “noise” (bright spots or fog) in photographs taken at shutter speeds slower than 1 s. The time required to record images increases by roughly 1.5 to 2 times. During pro- cessing, a warning will be displayed and pictures can not be taken (if the camera is turned off before processing is complete, the picture will be saved but noise reduction will not be per- formed). In continuous release mode, frame rates will slow and while photographs are being processed, the capacity of the memory buffer will drop. Long exposure noise reduction does not apply to movies. Select On to reduce “noise” (randomly-spaced bright pixels). If Off is selected, noise reduction will still be performed, but the amount is less than that performed when On is selected. Long Exposure NR High ISO Noise Reduction
180 i Adjust movie sound recording settings for the built-in micro- phone. ❚❚Microphone Select Microphone off to disable sound recording. Selecting any other option enables recording and sets the microphone to the selected sensitivity. ❚❚ Wind Noise Reduction Select On to enable the low-cut filter, reducing noise produced by wind blowing over the microphone (note that other sounds may also be affected). Choose whether the camera take s photos automatically while movies are being recorded in auto, creative, P, S, A, M , or sports mode or with HD movie selected in advanced movie mode. Photos will be taken when a suitably-framed portrait subject is in focus and the composition is stable. The maximum number of photos that can be taken during a single clip is 20, including photos taken manually ( 045). Movie Sound Options AThe 2 Icon Movies recorded with the microphone off are indicated by a 2 icon in full-frame and movie playback. Auto Image Capture Auto photography The camera will take photos automatically during movie recording if On is selected. 181 i Take photographs automatically at preset intervals. 1Choose the interval. Highlight Interval and press 2 to view the interval. Press 4 or 2 to highlight minutes or seconds and press 1 or 3 to choose an interval longer than the slowest anticipated shutter speed. Press J to return to the interval timer shooting menu when settings are complete. 2Choose the number of intervals. Highlight Number of shots and press 2 , then use the multi selector to choose the number of intervals. Press J to return to the interval timer shooting menu when settings are complete. Interval Timer Shooting DBefore Shooting Before proceeding, check that the clock is set correctly (0 30, 199) and then take a test shot at current settings and view the results in the monitor. Use of a tripod is recommended. To ensure that shooting is not inter- rupted, be sure the battery is fu lly charged or use an optional AC adapter and power connector.
182 i 3Start shooting. Highlight Start and press J. Shoot- ing will start after about 3 s, and con- tinue at the selected interval until all the shots have been taken (one shot is taken at each interval). Note that the pause following the recording of each shot varies with shutter speed and the time needed to record the image, with the result that photographs may not be recorded at the selected interval. AInterval Timer Photography A warning will be displayed if the camera is unable to start interval timer photography at current settin gs (for example, when “Bulb” is selected for shutter speed). While interval timer photography is in progress, settings can not be adjusted and the camera will not turn off automatically (0 28). AInterrupting Interval Timer Photography Interval timer shooting ends and interval timer settings are reset when the camera is turned off, the battery is exhausted, the memory card is full, the mode dial is rotated to a new setting or the G or K button is pressed.
183 i Choose On to use optical vibration reduction with compatible 1NIKKOR lenses. Select On to enable electronic vibration reduction in Motion Snapshot mode ( 088), when using the movie-record button, and when HD movie is selected in advanced movie mode ( 0 49). This feature is available even if the attached 1 NIKKOR lens does not support vibration reduction. Note that there will be a slight delay before recording begins. The area recorded is shown by guides in the display; the appearance of the guides depends on the option selected for Electronic VR (movies). Optical VR AVibration Reduction When the camera is panned, vibration reduction applies only to motion that is not part of the pan (if the camera is panned horizontally, for example, vibration reduction will be applied only to vertical shake), making it much easier to pan the camera smoothly in a wide arc. The composition may appear to change after the shutter is released, but this does not indicate a malfunction. AOptical VR If the lens supports both normal an d active vibration reduction, select- ing On will enable active vibration reduction, reducing both the rela- tively mild camera shake that occurs when the photographer is stationary and the strong camera shake associated with shooting from a moving vehicle or while walking. 185 i AGetting Good Results with Autofocus Autofocus does not perform well under the conditions listed below. The shutter release may be disabled if the camera is unable to focus under these conditions, or the focus area may be displayed in green and the camera may sound a beep, allowing the shutter to be released even when the subject is not in focus. In these cases, focus manually ( 0 186) or use focus lock ( 0189) to focus on another subject at the same distance, and then recompose the photograph. There is little or no contrast between the subject and the background. The subject contains areas of sharply contrasting brightness. Example : The subject is the same color as the back- ground.Examples : The subject is half in the shade; a night scene with point illu- mination. The subject contains objects at differ- ent distances from the camera. Background objects appear larger than the subject. Example : The subject is inside a cage.Example : A building is in the frame behind the subject. The subject is dominated by regular geometric patterns. The subject contains many fine details or is made up of objects that are small or lack variation in brightness. Example : Blinds or a row of windows in a skyscraper.Example : A field of flowers. ASee Also See page 197 for information on controlling the beep that sounds when the camera focuses.
