Maintaining the printer Changing print cartridges Removing a used print cartridge 1Make sure the printer is on. 2Lift the access cover. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the printer is busy. 3Press down on the cartridge carrier lever to raise the cartridge carrier lid. 4Remove the used print cartridge. To recycle the used cartridge, see “Recycling Lexmark products” on page 37. Installing print cartridges 1If you are installing new print cartridges, remove the sticker and tape from the back and bottom of the cartridges. 12 Warning: Do not touch the gold contact area on the back or the metal nozzles on the bottom of the cartridges. 2Press down on the cartridge carrier levers to raise the cartridge carrier lids. 3Insert the black cartridge or the photo cartridge in the left carrier. 5Close the access cover. Achieving better print quality Improving print quality If you are not satisfied with the print quality of a document, make sure you: Use the appropriate paper for the document. Use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper if you are printing photos or other high-quality images. Note: To prevent smudging or scratching, avoid touching the printed surface with your fingers or sharp objects. For best results, remove each printed sheet individually from the paper exit tray, and allow the prints to dry at least 24 hours before stacking, displaying, or storing. Use a paper that is a heavier weight, bright white, or coated. Select a higher print quality. If the document still does not have the print quality you want, follow these steps: 1Align the print cartridges. For more information, see “Aligning the print cartridges” on page 33. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 2. 2Clean the print cartridge nozzles. For more information, see “Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles” on page 34. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 3. 3Remove and reinsert the print cartridges. For more information, see “Removing a used print cartridge” on page 31 and “Installing print cartridges” on page 32. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 4. 4Wipe the print nozzles and contacts. For more information, see “Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts” on page 34. If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the print cartridges. For more information, see “Ordering supplies” on page 35. Aligning the print cartridges 1Load plain paper. 2Open the Solution Center. 3From the Maintenance tab, click Align to fix blurry edges. 33 Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
4Click Print. The Alignment page prints. 5Find the number under the darkest arrow for each alignment group. 6Use the up and down arrows in the Align Cartridges dialog box to select the number that matches the darkest arrow on the printed page for each alignment group. 7Click OK. If you aligned the cartridges to improve print quality, print your document again. If print quality has not improved, clean the print cartridge nozzles. Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles 1Load plain paper. 2Open the Solution Center. See “Using the Solution Center” on page 15. 3From the Maintenance tab, click Clean to fix horizontal streaks. 4Click Print. A page prints, forcing ink through the print cartridge nozzles to clean them. 5Print the document again to verify that the print quality has improved. 6If print quality has not improved, try cleaning the nozzles up to two more times. Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts 1Remove the print cartridge. 2Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 3Gently hold the cloth against the print cartridge nozzles for about three seconds, and then wipe in the direction shown. 34 Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
4Using another clean section of the cloth, gently hold the cloth against the contacts for about three seconds, and then wipe in the direction shown. 5With another clean section of the cloth, repeat step 3 and step 4. 6Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely. 7Reinsert the cartridge. 8Print the document again. 9If the print quality does not improve, clean the print nozzles. For more information, see “Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles” on page 34. 10Repeat step 9 up to two more times. 11If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the cartridge. Preserving the print cartridges Keep new cartridges in their packaging until you are ready to install them. Do not remove a cartridge from the printer except to replace, clean, or store it in an airtight container. The cartridges do not print correctly if left exposed for an extended period of time. Refilling a print cartridge The warranty does not cover repair of failures or damage caused by a refilled cartridge. Lexmark does not recommend use of a refilled cartridge. Refilling a cartridge can affect print quality and may cause damage to the printer. For best results, use Lexmark supplies. Troubleshooting Setup troubleshooting Power light is not lit Make sure you have disconnected the power supply cord from the wall outlet and then from the printer. 1Plug the cord all the way into the power supply on the printer. 2Plug the cord into an electrical outlet that other electrical devices have been using. 1 2 3If the light is not on, press . Software does not install The following operating systems are supported: Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later Windows XP Windows Vista Solution 1 Check that your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed on the box. Solution 2 1Check the USB cable for any obvious damage. 2Firmly plug the rectangular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer. The USB port is marked with the USB symbol. 3Firmly plug the square end of the USB cable into the back of the printer. Solution 4 1Press to turn the printer off. 2Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3Gently remove the power supply from the printer. 4Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. 6Press to turn the printer on. Solution 5 1Close all open software applications. 2Disable any anti-virus programs. 3Double-click the My Computer icon. In Windows XP, click Start to access the My Computer icon. 4Double-click the CD-ROM drive icon. 5If necessary, double-click setup.exe. 6Follow the instructions on the computer screen to install the software. Solution 6 1Visit our Web site at www.lexmark.com to check for the latest software. 2In all countries or regions except the United States, select your country or region. 3Click the links for drivers or downloads. 4Select your printer family. 5Select your printer model. 6Select your operating system. 7Select the file you want to download, and then follow the directions on the computer screen. Make sure no check mark appears next to Pause Printing. Make sure a check mark does appear next to Set As Default. Solution 6 1Uninstall the printer software, and then reinstall it.
