6Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet that other electrical devices have been using. 7Press to turn the printer on. Software did not install If you encountered problems while installing, or if your printer does not appear in the list in the Printers folder or as a printer option when sending a print job, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the software. These are some other possible solutions. Try one or more of the following: MAKE SURE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM IS SUPPORTED The following operating systems are supported: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later, and Mac OS X versions 10.5, 10.4 and 10.3. CHECK THAT YOUR COMPUTER MEETS THE MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS LISTED ON THE PRINTER BOX CHECK THE USB CONNECTION 1Check the USB cable for any obvious damage. If the cable is damaged, use a new one. 2Firmly plug the square end of the USB cable into the back of the printer. 3Firmly plug the rectangular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer. The USB port is marked with the USB symbol. RECONNECT THE POWER SUPPLY 1Press to turn the printer off. 2Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3Gently remove the power supply from the printer. 4Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. 6Press to turn the printer on. TEMPORARILY DISABLE SECURITY PROGRAMS IN WINDOWS 1Close all open programs. 2Disable any security programs. 3Do one of the following: In Windows Vista, click . In Windows XP and earlier, click Start. 4Click Computer or My Computer. 5Double-click the CD or DVD drive icon. 51
6If necessary, double-click setup.exe. 7Follow the instructions on the computer screen to install the software. 8When the installation is completed, enable the security software again. CHECK POWER If the light is not on, then make sure that the power cord is properly connected to the printer and plugged into a known working electrical outlet that other electrical devices have been using. REMOVE AND THEN RELOAD PAPER CHECK INK Check the ink levels, and then install new print cartridges if necessary. CHECK CARTRIDGES 1Remove the print cartridges. 2Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed. 12 12 3Reinsert the cartridges. cUnder Hardware and Sound, click Printer. In Windows XP aClick Start. bClick Printers and Faxes. In Windows 2000 aClick Start. bClick Settings Œ Printers. 2Double-click the printer. 3Click Printer. Make sure no check mark appears next to Pause Printing. If a check mark does not appear next to Set As Default Printer, then you must select the printer for each file that you want to print. Using Macintosh For Mac OS X version 10.5 1From the Finder desktop, click Œ System Preferences Œ Print & Fax. 2From the Default Printer pop-up menu, check if the printer is the default printer. If the printer is not the default printer, then you must select the printer for each file that you want to print. If you want to set the printer as the default printer, then select the printer from the Default Printer pop-up menu. 3Click Open Print Queue. The print queue dialog appears. Make sure that the print job is not on hold. If the print job is on hold: If you want to resume a particular print job, choose the document name, and then click Resume. If you want to resume all print jobs in the queue, then click Resume Printer. For Mac OS X version 10.4 and earlier 1From the Finder desktop, click Go Œ Utilities Œ Print Center or Printer Setup Utility. The Printer List dialog appears. 2Double-click the printer. The print queue dialog appears. Make sure that the print job is not on hold. If the print job is on hold: –If you want to resume a particular print job, choose the document name, and then click Resume. –If you want to resume all print jobs in the queue, then click Start Jobs. If the printer is not in bold, then it is not the default printer. You must select the printer for each file that you want to print. 53
If you want to set the printer as the default printer: aGo back to the Printer List dialog, and then select the printer. bClick Make Default. DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT POWER SUPPLY 1Press to turn off the printer. 2Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3Remove the power supply from the printer. 4Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. 6Press to turn on the printer. REMOVE AND REINSTALL THE SOFTWARE If you encountered problems while installing, or if your printer does not appear in the printers folder or as a printer option when sending a print job, then try uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Removing and reinstalling the software If the printer is not functioning properly, or if a communications error message appears when you try to use the printer, you may need to remove and reinstall the printer software. In Windows XP, click Start. 2Click Programs or All Programs, and then select the printer program folder from the list. 3Select Uninstall. 4Follow the instructions on the computer screen to remove the printer software. 5Restart the computer before reinstalling the printer software. 6Click Cancel on all New Hardware Found screens. 7Insert the installation CD, and then follow the instructions on the computer screen to reinstall the software. If the install screen does not appear automatically after you restart your computer, do one of the following: In Windows Vista: a Click . bLocate the Start Search box. cType D:\setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD or DVD drive. 54
In Windows XP: a Click Start Œ Run. bType D:\setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD or DVD drive. Using Macintosh 1Close all open software applications. 2From the Finder desktop, double-click the printer folder. 3Double-click the Uninstaller icon. 4Follow the instructions on the computer screen to remove the printer software. 5Restart the computer before reinstalling the printer software. 6Insert the installation CD, and then follow the instructions on the computer screen to reinstall the software. If the software still does not install correctly, visit our Web site at www.lexmark.com to check for the latest software. 1In all countries or regions except the United States, select your country or region. 2Click the links for drivers or downloads. 3Select your printer family. 4Select your printer model. 5Select your operating system. 6Select the file that you want to download, and then follow the directions on the computer screen. Enabling the USB port in Windows To confirm that the USB port is enabled on the computer: 1Do one of the following: In Windows Vista aClick Œ Control Panel. bClick System and Maintenance Œ System. cClick Device Manager. In Windows XP aClick Start. bClick Control Panel Œ Performance and Maintenance Œ System. cFrom the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. 2Click the plus sign (+) beside Universal Serial Bus Controller. If USB Host Controller and USB Root Hub are listed, then the USB port is enabled. For more information, see the computer documentation. Solving printer power problems The printer and the computer cannot exchange data. These are possible solutions. Try one or more of the following: MAKE SURE THE PRINTER POWER SUPPLY IS ATTACHED CORRECTLY 1Press to turn the printer off. 2Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3Remove the power supply from the printer. 4Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. 6Press to turn the printer on. MAKE SURE THE PRINTER IS NOT IN SLEEP MODE If the power light is blinking on and off slowly, then the printer is in sleep mode. 1Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. 2Wait ten seconds, and then insert the power cord into the wall outlet. 3Press to turn the printer on. 56
