6Lift the blue levers on the imaging kit, and then pull it toward you. 7Press down on the blue levers, grasp the handles on the sides, and then pull the imaging kit out. Warning—Potential Damage: Do not touch the underside of the imaging kit. This could damage the imaging kit. 8Remove the used developer unit. 9Place the used developer unit in the enclosed package. For more information, see “Recycling Lexmark products” on page 38. 10Unpack the replacement developer unit, and leave the packaging on. 11Gently shake the developer unit from side to side. 12Remove the red shipping cover from the developer unit. 13Insert the developer unit. 14Align and insert the imaging kit. Maintaining the printer 112
15Gently, but firmly push the blue levers down until the imaging kit drops into place. 16Replace the waste toner box. 17Replace the right side cover. Maintaining the printer 113
18Replace the toner cartridges. 19Close the top door. 20Close the front door. Cleaning the exterior of the printer 1Make sure that the printer is turned off and unplugged from the wall outlet. CAUTION—SHOCK HAZARD: To avoid the risk of electric shock when cleaning the exterior of the printer, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and disconnect all cables from the printer before proceeding. 2Remove paper from the standard exit tray. 3Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. Warning—Potential Damage: Do not use household cleaners or detergents, as they may damage the finish of the printer. Maintaining the printer 114
4Wipe only the outside of the printer, making sure to include the standard exit tray. Warning—Potential Damage: Using a damp cloth to clean the interior may cause damage to your printer. 5Make sure the standard exit tray is dry before beginning a new print job. Moving the printer Before moving the printer CAUTION—POTENTIAL INJURY: The printer weight is greater than 18 kg (40 lb) and requires two or more trained personnel to lift it safely. 21 kg (46.2 lbs.) CAUTION—POTENTIAL INJURY: Before moving the printer, follow these guidelines to avoid personal injury or printer damage: Turn the printer off using the power switch, and then unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Disconnect all cords and cables from the printer before moving it. Lift the printer off of the optional drawer and set it aside instead of trying to lift the drawer and printer at the same time. Note: Use the handholds located on both sides of the printer to lift it off the optional drawer. Warning—Potential Damage: Damage to the printer caused by improper moving is not covered by the printer warranty. Moving the printer to another location The printer and options can be safely moved to another location by following these precautions: Any cart used to move the printer must have a surface able to support the full footprint of the printer. Any cart used to move the options must have a surface able to support the dimensions of the options. Keep the printer in an upright position. Avoid severe jarring movements. Shipping the printer When shipping the printer, use the original packaging or call the place of purchase for a relocation kit. Maintaining the printer 115
Administrative support Restoring the factory default settings Menu settings marked with an asterisk (*) indicate the active settings. You can restore the original printer settings, often referred to as the factory default settings. If you want to retain a list of the current menu settings for reference, then print a menu settings page before you restore the factory default settings. Warning—Potential Damage: Restoring factory default settings returns most printer settings to the original factory default setting. All downloaded resources in the printer memory are deleted. This includes fonts, macros, and symbol sets. 1Make sure the printer is on and Ready appears. 2From the printer control panel, press . 3Press the arrow buttons until Settings appears, and then press . 4Press the arrow buttons until General Settings appears, and then press . 5Press the arrow buttons until Factory Defaults appears, and then press . 6Press the arrow buttons until Restore Now appears, and then press . Submitting changes appears briefly. 7Press , and then press until Ready appears. Using the Embedded Web Server If the printer is installed on a network, the Embedded Web Server is available for a range of functions: Configuring printer settings Checking the status of the printer supplies Configuring network settings Viewing reports Restoring the factory default settings Viewing the virtual display Setting Web page password protect Setting Panel PIN protect Setting the date and time To access the Embedded Web Server: 1Type the printer IP address into the address field of your Web browser. Note: If you do not know the IP address of the printer, then print a network setup page and locate the IP address in the TCP/IP section. 2Click one of the tabs to access information about the printer, change settings, or view a report. Note: If the printer is connected to a computer by a USB or parallel cable, then open the Local Printer Settings Utility for Windows or Printer Settings for Macintosh to access printer menus. Setting up e-mail alerts You can have the printer send you an e-mail when the supplies are getting low or when the paper needs to be changed, added, or unjammed. To set up e-mail alerts: 1Type the printer IP address into the address field of your Web browser. Note: If you do not know the IP address of the printer, then print a network setup page and locate the IP address in the TCP/IP section. 2Click Settings. 3Under Other Settings, click E-mail Alert Setup. 4Select the items for notification and type in the e-mail addresses that you want to receive e-mail alerts. 5Click Submit. Note: See your system support person to set up the e-mail server. Configuring supply notifications You can determine how you would like to be notified when supplies run low or reach their end-of-life. To configure supply notifications using the Embedded Web Server: 1Type the printer IP address into the address field of your Web browser. Note: If you do not know the IP address of the printer, then print a network setup page and locate the IP address in the TCP/IP section. 2Click Settings. 3Click Print Settings. 4Click Supply Notifications. 5From the drop-down box for each supply, select among the options for notification. Explanations for each option are provided. 6Click Submit to save your selections. Copying printer settings to other printers Using the Embedded Web Server, you can copy printer settings to up to 15 other network printers. To copy printer settings: 1Type the printer IP address into the address field of your Web browser. Note: If you do not know the IP address of the printer, then print a network setup page and locate the IP address in the TCP/IP section. 2Click Copy Printer Settings. 3To change the language, select a language from the drop-down list, and then click Click here to submit language. 4Click Printer Settings. Clearing jams Jam error messages appear on the printer control panel display and include the area of the printer where the jam occurred. When there is more than one jam, the number of jammed pages is displayed. Avoiding jams The following hints can help you avoid jams: Paper tray recommendations Make sure the paper lies flat in the tray. Do not remove a tray while the printer is printing. Do not load a tray while the printer is printing. Load it prior to printing, or wait for a prompt to load it. Do not load too much paper. Make sure the stack height does not exceed the indicated maximum height. Make sure the guides in the tray or the multipurpose feeder are properly positioned and are not pressing too tightly against the paper or envelopes. Push the tray in firmly after loading paper. Paper recommendations Use only recommended paper or specialty media. Do not load wrinkled, creased, damp, bent, or curled paper. Flex, fan, and straighten paper before loading it. Do not use paper that has been cut or trimmed by hand. Do not mix paper sizes, weights, or types in the same stack. Make sure all sizes and types are set correctly in the printer control panel menus. Understanding jam numbers and locations When a jam occurs, a message indicating the jam location appears. Open doors and covers, and remove trays to access jam locations.
