    StartUpConditions 
    THERMALEXPANSION 
    Watersup,plysystemsmay,becauseofsucheventsashighline 
    pressure,trequentcut-offs,theeffectsofwaterhammeramong 
    bthers,haveinstalleddevicessuchaspressurereducingvalves, 
    checkvalves,backflowpreventers,etc...tocontrolthesetypesof 
    problems.Whenthesedevicesarenotequippedwithaninternal 
    by-pass,andnoothermeasuresaretaken,thedevicescausethe 
    watersystemtobeclosed.Aswaterisheated,itexpands(ther- 
    malexpansion)anddosedsystemsdonotallowfortheexpan- 
    sionofheatedwater. 
    Thewaterwithinthewaterheatertankexpandsasitisheatedand 
    increasesthepressureofthewatersystem.Iftherelievingpointof 
    thewaterheaterstemperature-pressurereliefvalveisreached,the 
    valvewillrelievetheexcesspressure.Thetemperature-pr_-,=,sure 
    reliefvalveisnotintendedforthecohstantreliefofthermal 
    expansion.Thisisanunacceptableconditionandmustbecor- 
    rected. 
    Itisrecommendedthatanydevicesinstalledwhichcouldcreatea 
    closedsystemhaveaby-passand/orthesystemhaveanexpan- 
    siontanktorelievethepressurebuiltbythermalexpansion.

    throughtheSearsServiceCenters.Contactthelocalplumbing

    CONDENSATION 
    Wheneverthewaterheaterisfilledwithcoldwater,acertain 
    amountofcofidensationwillformwhiletheburnerison.A 
    waterheatermayappeartobeleakingwheninfactthewateris 
    condensation.Thisusuallyhappenswhen: 
    •Whenanewwaterheaterisfilledwithcoldwaterforthe 
    firsttime. 
    •Whengasburnsandwatervaporisproducedinwater 
    heaters,particularlyhighefficiencymodelswherefluetem- 
    peraturesarelower. 
    •Whenyouuselargeamountsofhotwaterinashorttime 
    andtherefillwaterisverycold. 
    Moisturefromtheproductsofcombustioncondenseonthe 
    coolertanksurfacesandformdropsofwaterwhichmayfall 
    ontotheburnerorotherhotsurfacestoproducea_sizzlingor 
    fryingnoise. 
    Excessivecondensationcancausepilotoutageduetowaterrun- 
    ningdownthefluetubeontothemainburnerandputtingout 
    thepilot. 
    Becauseofthesuddennessandamountofwater,condensation 
    watermaybediagnosedasa_tankleak.Afterthewaterinthe 
    tankwarmsup(about1-2hours),theconditionshould 
    disappear. SMOKEIODOR 
    Itisnotuncommontoexperienceasmallamountofsmokeand 
    odorduringtheinitialstart-up.Thisisduetoburningoffofoil 
    frommetalparrs,andwilldisappearinashortwhile. 
    OperationalConditions 
    SMELLYWATER 
    Ineachglasslinedwaterheaterthereisinstalledatleastone 
    anoderod(seepartssection)forcorrosionprotectionofthe 
    tank.Certainwaterconditionswillcauseareactionbetweenthis 
    rodandthewater.Themostcommoncomplaintassociatedwith 
    theanoderodisoneofarotteneggsmell.Thisodorisderived 
    fromhydrogensulfidegasdissolvedinthewater.Thesmellis 
    theresultoffourfactorswhichmustallbepresentfortheodor 
    todevelop: 
    a.aconcentrationofsulfateinthesupplywater. 
    b.littleornodissolvedoxygeninthewater. 
    c.asulfatereducingbacteriawithinthewaterheater.(This 
    harmlessbacteriaisnon-toxictohumans.) 
    d.anexcessofactivehydrogeninthetank.Thisiscausedby 
    thecorrosionprotectiveactionoftheanode. 
    Donotassumethewaterheaterisleakinguntiltherehasbeen 
    enoughtimeforthewaterinthetanktowarmup. 
    Anundersizedwaterheaterwillcausemorecondensation.The 
    waterheatermustbesizedproperlytomeetthefamilys 
    demandsforhotwaterincludingdishwashers,washingmachines 
    andshowerheads. 
    Excessivecondensationmaybenoticedduringthewinterand 
    earlyspringmonthswhenincomingwatertemperaturesareat 
    theirlowest. Smellywatermaybeeliminatedorreducedinsomewaterheater 
    modelsbyreplacingtheanode(s)withoneoflessactivematerial, 
    andthenchlorinatingthewaterheatertankandallhotwater 
    lines.ContactSearsServiceforfurtherinformationconcerning 
    anAnodeReplacementKit#9001453andthisChlorination 
    Treatment. 
    Ifthesmellywaterpersistsaftertheanodereplacementandchlo- 
    rinationtreatment,wecanonlysuggestthatcontinuouschlori- 
    nationandfilteringconditioningequipmentbeconsideredto 
    eliminatethewaterproblem. 
    Goodventingisessentialforagasfiredwaterheatertooperate 
    properlyaswellastocarryawayproductsofcombustionand 
    watervapor. Donotremovetheanodeleavingthetankunprotected.By 
    doingso,allwarrantyonthewaterheatertankisvoided. 
    AWARNING 
    HOTTERWATERCANSCALD:.Waterheatersareintendedto 
    producehotwater.Waterheatedtoatemperaturewhichwill 
    satisfyclotheswashing,dishwashing,andothersanitizingneeds 
    canscaldandpermanentlyinjureyouuponcontact.Somepeo- 
    plearemorelikelytobepermanentlyinjuredbyhotwaterthan 
    others.Theseincludetheelderly,children,theinfirm,orphysicak 
    ly/mentallyhandicapped.Ifanyoneusinghotwaterinyourhome 
    fitsintooneofthasegroupsorIfthereisalocalcodeorstatelaw 
    requitingacertaintemperaturewateratthehotwatertap,then 
    youmusttakespecialprecautions.Inadditiontousingthelowest 
    possibletemperaturesettingthatsatlsllasyourhotwaterneeds, 
    ameanssuchasamixingvalve,shouldbeusedatthehotwater 
    tapsusedbythesepeopleoratthewaterheater.Mixingvalves 
    areavmZabieatplumbingsupplyorhardwarestores_Followman-

    changingthefactorysettingonthethermostat,readthe

    valve.Thissystemshutsoffthegassupplytothewaterheater 
    burnerswhenhighwatertemperaturesarepresent.Itisnon- 
    resetsable.Ifthehightemperatureshutoffactivates,thegascon- 
    trolvalvemustbereplaced.Ifthisweretooccur,turnOFFthe 
    entiregassupplytothewaterheater.ContacttheSearsService 
    Center. 
    AWARNING 
    Shouldoverheatingoccurorthegassupplyfailtoshutoff, 
    turnOFFthemanualgascontrnvalvetotheappliance. AWARNING 
    Duetothenatureofthetypicalgaswaterheater,the 
    watertemperatureincertainsituationsmaybehotter 
    thanthethermostatsetting. 
    Short,frequentdrawsofhotwater-especiallywithvery 
    coldincomingwater-canshockthethermostatintobrief 
    operationresultinginhotterandhotterlayersofwater 
    closertothetopofthetank. 
    Changesinhotwaterusagepatternsorraisingthetem- 
    peraturedifferentialbetweenthecut-onofthethermo- 
    statandthecoldwatertemperaturewillusuallyeliminate 
    theproblem. 
    NOTENOUGHORNOHOTWATER 
    •Checkthemanualgasshutoffvalvetobesureitisopen. 
    iCheckthepilotflame.Itmayhavegoneout.Allmodelshave  anopeningbehindtheouterdoorforviewingthepilot. 
    Ifthepilotisnotlit,followtheLightinginstructionsinthis 
    manualorlocatedabovethegascontrolvalveonthewater 
    heatertore.lightthepilot.Ifthewaterwasextremelyhotandis 
    nowcold,thehighlimitsafetytemperatureshutoffmayhave 
    putouttheburnerandpilot.Ifthehightemperatureshutoff 
    activates,thegascontrolvalvemustbereplaced.Contactthe 
    SearsServiceCenter. 
    _ThegascontrolknobmustbeturnedtotheONposidon.  Thetemperatureadjustmentdialmaybesettoolow.Seethe

    fitting.Putpipedopeorteflontapeonthethreads
