Yourlocaljurisdictionalauthority,whilemandatingthe useofatemperature-pressurereliefvalvecomplying withANSIZ21.22andASME,mayrequireavalvemodel differentfromtheonefurnishedwiththewaterheater. Compliancewithsuchlocalrequirementsmustbesatis- fiedbytheinstallerorenduserofthewaterheaterwith alocallyprescribedtemperature.pressurereliefvalve installedinthedesignatedopeninginthewaterheaterin placeofthefactoryfurnishedvalve. Forsafeoperationofthewaterheater,thereliefvalve mustnotberemovedfromitsdesignatedopeningor plugged. Thetemperature-pressurereliefvalvemustbeinstalled directlyintothefittingofthewaterheaterdesignated forthereliefvalve.Positionthevalvedownwardandpro- videtubingsothatanydischargewillexitonlywithin6 inchesabove,oratanydistancebelowthestructural floor.Becertainthatnocontactismadewithanylive electricalpart.Thedischargeopeningmustnotbe blockedorreducedinsizeunderanycircumstances. Excessivelength,over30feet,oruseofmorethanfour elbowscancauserestrictionandreducethedischarge capacityofthevalve. Novalveorotherobstructionistobeplacedbetween thereliefvalveandthetank.Donotconnecttubing directlytodischargedrainunlessa6airgapisprovided. Topreventbodilyinjury,hazardtolife,orpropertydam- age,thereliefvalvemustbeallowedtodischargewater inquantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.Ifthedis- chargepipeisnotconnectedtoadrainorothersuitable means,thewaterflowmaycausepropertydamage. TheDischargePipe: •Mustnotbesmallerinsizethantheoutletpipesizeof thevalve,orhaveanyreducingcouplingsorother restrictions. !•Mustnotbepluggedorblocked. •Mustbeofmateriallistedforhotwaterdistribution. Whetherreplacinganoldwaterheaterorputtingthewater heaterinanewlocation,thefollowingcriticalpointsmustbe observed.
