Boot from SAN procedures ThefollowingintegratedprocedurecanbeusedtoconfiguresystemstobootfromSAN-basedstorage usingeitherEmulexorQLogicHBAsandEVA,orXParrays.Thisprocedurecanbeusedinc-Class bladeconfigurationsusingVirtualConnect(VC)anditsoptionalcentralizedmanagementfunctionality todefinebootpathinformationforeachBootfromSANbladeserver.Severalofthestepspertain onlytoVirtualConnect-managedBootfromSANconfigurations.Youcanalsousethisprocedureto setupnon-VCornonVC-managedBootfromSANconfigurations.Besuretofollowallthestepsin theorderpresented,unlessyouarespecificallydirectedtoskipstepsforyourconfiguration. Step 1 – Set up the system hardware – basic Refertothedocumentationprovidedwithyourhardwaretoperformthefollowingsteps. FibreChannelhostbusadapterssoftwareguideforWindows21
1.Installallserver,switch/interconnectandarrayhardware. 2.InstallallHBAsintheservers.ItisrecommendedthatyourecordWWNsoftheHBAsforfuture reference. 3.Installallfibrechannelconnections. 4.Allc-ClassVirtualConnectuserswhointendtomanageHBAbootpathfromtheVirtualConnect ManagerseeStep3-VirtualConnectManager;allothersseeStep2. Configure the HBAs — BIOS enable VirtualConnectManager(VCM)usersshouldskiptoStep3-VirtualConnectManager. Step 2a – QLogic HBAs 1.Whiletheserverisbooting,pressCtrl+QtoenterFast!UTIL. 2.FromtheSelectHostAdaptermenu,selecttheHBAyouwanttoboot,andthenpressEnter. 3.FromtheFast!UTILOptionsmenu,selectConfigurationSettings,andthenpressEnter. 4.FromtheConfigurationSettingsmenu,selectAdapter Settings,andthenpressEnter. 5.FromtheAdapterSettingsmenu,changeHostAdapterBIOStoEnabled bypressing Enter. 6.SavethechangesbypressingtheEscapekeytwice,thenselectSave Changes. 7.Reboottheserver. 8.ExittheFast!UTILfeature. 9.GotoStep4-Hardwaresetup-SANconfiguration. Step 2b – Emulex HBAs 1.Whiletheserverisbooting,pressAlt+EtoenterBIOSsetup. 2.FromtheEnter a Selectionprompt,selectthefirstHBA. 3.SelectOption 2, Configure This Adapter’s Parameters. 4.SelectOption 1, Enable or Disable BIOS. 5.Press1toenableBIOS,thenpresstheEscapekey. 6.SelectOption 4, Topology Selection. 7.SelectFabric Point to Point.PresstheEscapekey. 8.PressXtoexitandreboottheserver. 9.GotoStep4-Hardwaresetup-SANconfiguration. Step 3 – Virtual Connect Manager setup RefertotheHPVirtualConnectforc-ClassBladeSystemUserGuidetoperformthefollowingsteps. NOTE: You cannot set boot path configurations or PXE settings using Virtual Connect on the BL860c and BL870c blade servers. 1.BeforesettinguptheVirtualConnect, a.Poweroffallbladeserversforwhichyouneedtocreateaprofile. b.DetermineyourvirtualizationstrategybyusingfactorysuppliedEthernetMACaddresses andfibrechannelWWNsorhavethevirtualconnectvirtualizethem. c.Determinetheoversubscriptionratiotouse. d.DetermineifyouwilluseVCMtoconfigurebootpathinformationfortheHBAsorwillperform thisstepthroughtheHBABIOSwhichisthedefault. 2.LogintotheVirtualConnectManager(VCM)onyourc-Classenclosure. 3.ItisrecommendedthatyoufollowtheVCMsetupwizardstosetupandconfiguretheVCdomain, networkandfibrechannelparameters. 4.Createserverprofilesforallservers.SetPXEtoEnabledifyouwilluseRDPtobuildyourBoot fromSANmedium.SelecttheShow Fibre Channel Boot Parametersbox. 5.Inthelistofports,choosetheportconnectedtothedesiredbootpathHBAandselectPrimary. 6.EnterthetargetWWPNofyourdesiredbootdevice. 7.EntertheLUNnumberofthevirtualdiskthatwillbepresentedtothishost. 8.Tosetupafailoverpathifdesired,enterthesecondarytargetWWPNandLUN,thenselect `Secondaryforthispath.Thispathshouldnotbezonedatthistime. 9.SetanyotherportstoDisabled. 10.Reboottheserverblade. 11.SeeStep4b-Settingupswichzoning. Step 4 – Hardware setup – SAN configuration Performthefollowingstepstosetupallhostsystems: •Step4a-Configurethehostbootorder •Step4b-Settingupswichzoning •Step4c-CreateaLUN Step 4a – Configure the host boot order IfyouplantousetheVirtualConnectManager(VCM)tosetupbootpathinformation,gotoStep4B. TheVCMwillautomaticallysetthebootorder. 1.VerifythatyouhavethelatestserverBIOS. 2.Setthebootorder: a.Whilethesystemisbooting,pressF9tostarttheROMBIOSSetupUtility(RBSU). b.SelectBoot Controller Order. c.SelecttheprimaryHBA(thatis,theHBAdedicatedtoyourSANorpresentedtoyourboot LUN)andmoveittoControllerOrder1. d.DisabletheSmartArrayControllerasfollows: •FromthemainRBSUmenu,selectPCI Devices. •SelecttheinternalarrayfromthelistofdevicesandtheDisableoptionfromthedrop- downbox. •PresstheEscapekeytoreturntomainmenu. •PresstheEscapekey,thenpresstheF10keytosaveyourconfigurationandexittheutility. Step 4b – Setting up switch zoning 1.CreateazonethatincludestheHBAbootportWWPNandoneactivehostportfromthetarget storage. FibreChannelhostbusadapterssoftwareguideforWindows23
2.Enablethezone. NOTE: If your array firmware is in Active/Passive mode, then you must zone in the active port for your Boot From SAN configuration. For more information about active-standby (Active/Passive) controller types, see 3 Troubleshooting, page 41. Step 4c – Create a LUN CreateaseparateLUNforeachBootfromSANserverusingtheappropriateprocedure(s)here.After completingStep4c-CreateaLUN,VCMusersshouldskiptoStep6-Installtheoperatingsystem. Creating a LUN on Enterprise Virtual Arrays 1.AccessCommandViewEVAortheHSVElementManagerthroughawebbrowser. 2.CreateaseparatehostforeachBootfromSANservercontainingtheWWPNofitsHBA. 3.Createavirtualdisk(LUN)foreachBootfromSANserverandpresenttotheappropriatehost. Creating a LUN on Modular Smart Arrays 1000 and 1500 1.Createavirtualdisk(LUN)usingtheArrayConfigurationUtility(ACU)onaseparateserver. 2.SelecttheSelective Storage PresentationoptiontoassigntheLUNtotheHBAconnection. Creating a LUN on XP 1.StartCommandViewXPfromawebbrowser. 2.Selectaport(suchasCL1-A). 3.SetLUNsecurityforthearrayport. 4.Createahostgroupwiththeproperhostmode(forWindows,hostmode=0x00). 5.AssignthefirstbootHBAportWWNtothenewlycreatedhostgroup. 6.AssignLUN0tothathostgroup. Ifmorethanonedevicehasaccess,selectthesupportedLUN. 8.SavethechangesbypressingtheEscape keytwice,thenselectSave Changes. 9.ExittheFast!UTILfeature. 10.Reboottheserver. 11.GotoStep6-Installtheoperatingsystem. Step 5b – Emulex HBAs 1.Whiletheserverisbooting,pressAlt+EtoenterBIOSsetup. 2.AttheEnteraSelectionprompt,selecttheHBAthatistheprimarybootpath. 3.SelectOption 1, Configure Boot Devices. 4.InthelistofSavedBootDevices,select1astheprimarybootpath. 5.AttheSelectTwoDigitNumberoftheDesiredBootDeviceprompt,selecttheWWPNforthe desiredbootport. 6.Attheprompt,enterthetwodigitsofthestartingLUN(hexadecimal).UsetheLUNnumberthat youcreatedonyourstoragearray. 7.Select 1, Boot This Device via WWPN. 8.Reboottheserver. Step 6 – Install the operating system TherearetwooptionsforinstallingtheoperatingsystemonBootfromSANhosts. •CD-ROMinstallation. •AutomatedinstallationwithRapidDeploymentPack. Option 1 – CD-ROM installation WheninstallingWindowsoperatingsystemsitisnecessarytoobtainthelatestsupportedbootdriver foryourHBAfromthewebsitebelow.HPprovidespackagedbootversionsofthedriversthatcontain allofthenecessaryfilestocreateloadmediathatyoucanusewhensettinguptheoperatingsystem toinstallthedriver.Youcanalsousefloppydisksthathaveanembeddeddrive,isaUSBfloppy drive,orisvirtual.Seeyourserverdocumentationforinformationandrestrictionsthatmayapplyto theuseofvirtualorUSBfloppies.
