1 Boot from SAN Thischapterdescribesbootsetupproceduresfromastorageareanetwork(SAN)withtherequired softwareandhardwareusingHPEmulexHBAsorHPQLogicHBAsrunningonItaniumorProliant Windowssystems.Forthelatestversionofthisdocument,seetheHPstoragewebsite: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/networking/index.html Traditionally,HPserversbootoperatingsystemsfrominternalSCSIorIDEstoragedevices.Withthe supportofexternalbootingfromHPStorageWorksHBAsandRAIDarrays,youhavetheoptionto eliminateserver-basedinternalbootdevices.Bootingfromanexternaldevicedecreasesdowntime throughfasterserverreplacementintheeventofaserverorHBAfailure. Restrictions ThefollowingsectionsdescriberestrictionsforbootingfromaSAN. Operating system restrictions Thefollowingoperatingsystemrestrictionsapply: MicrosoftWindowsoperatingsystemsrequireaunique,dedicateddiskforbooting.Therefore,each serverconnectedtoaRAIDarraymusthaveitsowndisk,orlogicalunitnumber(LUN),dedicatedfor bootingandoperatingsystemfiles.Datacanbeallocatedacrossboththebootdiskandtheremaining disks.Bootingfromarray-baseddiskpartitionsispossible. NOTE: For Windows Server 2003, a crash dump file will not be generated if the path to the system drive is different from the active path established if the system was booted at the time of a system crash. To ensure that a crash dump is created, move the system disk back to the active boot time path as soon as possible, after any failure. Reconfiguring HBA zoning to avoid time-out conditions InbootfromSANconfigurationswheretherearemorethantwoEmulexHBAsinthesamezoneas thebootHBA,atime-outconditionmayoccurwhenthebootHBAinteractswiththenon-bootHBAs, causingacrash-dumptonotbegenerated.Toavoidtime-outconditions,reconfigurethezoningso thatthebootinstanceforeachpathisinitsownzone,separatefromtheothernon-bootHBAs.This mayalsoresultinfasterboot-uptimes. Server replacement in the event of a server failure IfyouretainingtheoriginalHBAs,placethemintheircorrespondingPCIslotsonthereplacement server.IfyouarenotretainingtheoriginalHBAs,makesureto: •RebuildtheboottablewiththenewHBAIDinformation. •RemovetheoriginalHBAsfromtheirzones,andreplacethemwiththenewHBAs. •RemovetheoriginalHBAsfromtheirarraystoragepresentationandreplacethemwiththenew HBAs. Prerequisites TosetupbootingfromaSAN,youshouldbefamiliarwith: •EVA,MSA,orXPFibreChannelRAIDarrays.ThisinformationisintheRAIDarray. •Familiaritywithswitch-basedzoning.Forinformationaboutzoningforyourenvironment,seeyour switch’sinstallationguidedocumentation. Thefollowingproceduresarenotfullydescribedinthisdocument.However,inordertoperformboot fromSANsetupprocedures,youwillneedtocompletethem. •MSA,EVAandXP •HPhighlyrecommendscreatinganewbootLUNsothatyouwillbeginwithacleanandun- partitionedvirtualdisk. •Verifyingthatthestorageunitshavetheproperaccess. •Switchconfigurationsandzoning—Checktheswitchtoensuretherearenozoningconflicts.You mustsetupswitchzoningaspartofyourconfiguration. •IfyouareusingtheRapidDeploymentPack,seetheRDPdocumentation. Working with boot disk partitions •Beforecreatingabootdisk,youmuststartwithaclean,unpartitionedvirtualdisk. •CreateaLUNthatisatleast32GBforW2K3and46GbforW2K8. •WhenbootingfromaRAIDarraythathasothervirtualdisksattachedtootherservers,beaware thatwhensettingupbootingforthenewserver,theinstallationprogrammaydisplayalistof partitionsvisibleforloadingtheoperatingsystem.Thedisplaycontainsadiskforeverycontroller portaccessiblebytheHBA. •HPrecommendsthatonlyoneinstanceofthebootLUNbevisibletotheserverduringtheinitial installation.TheinstallationmayfailifmultipleinstancesofthebootLUNareavailabletothe server. Switch-based zoning Youmustbefamiliarwithswitch-basedzoning.Forspecificinformationaboutzoningforyour environment,seeyourswitch'sinstallationguide.
