●Fan/heat sink assembly (see System board on page 92) ●Processor (see System board on page 92) Remove the system board: 1.Disconnect the modem module cable (1) from the modem module. 2.Disconnect the following cables from the system board: (2) Audio/infrared board cable NOTE:The audio/infrared board cable connects to a LIF connector on the system board. (3) USB board cable NOTE:The USB board cable connects to a LIF connector on the system board. (4) Power connector cable 3.Remove the Phillips PM2.5×7.0 screw (1) that secures the system board to the base enclosure. 4.Use the optical drive connector (2) to lift the right side of the system board (3) until it rests at an angle. 5.Remove the system board (4) by sliding it up and to the right at an angle. Reverse the preceding procedure to install the system board. TV tuner module cable NOTE:The TV tuner module cable is available in the Cable Kit, spare part number 501891-001. Before removing the TV tuner module cable, follow these steps: 1.Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2.Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3.Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC Adapter from the computer. 4.Remove the battery (see Battery on page 52). 5.Remove the following components: a.Hard drive (see Hard drive on page 62). b.Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 55). c.Switch cover and keyboard (see Switch cover and keyboard on page 69). d.Speaker assembly (see Speaker assembly on page 74). e.Display assembly (see Display assembly on page 76). f.Top cover (see Top cover on page 84). g.USB board (see USB board on page 90). h.System board (see System board on page 92). Remove the TV tuner module cable: 1.Release the clips (1) built into the base enclosure that secure the TV tuner antenna connector. 2.Remove the TV tuner antenna connector (2) from the clip built into the base enclosure. 94 Chapter 4 Removal and replacement procedures
3.Remove the TV tuner module cable (3) from the clips and routing channel built into the base enclosure. Reverse this procedure to install the TV tuner module cable. Modem module cable NOTE:The modem module cable is available in the Cable Kit, spare part number 501891-001. The modem module cable includes the RJ-11 jack. Before removing the modem module cable, follow these steps: 1.Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2.Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3.Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC Adapter from the computer. 4.Remove the battery (see Battery on page 52). 5.Remove the following components: a.Hard drive (see Hard drive on page 62). b.Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 55). c.Switch cover and keyboard (see Switch cover and keyboard on page 69). d.Speaker assembly (see Speaker assembly on page 74). e.Display assembly (see Display assembly on page 76). f.Top cover (see Top cover on page 84). g.USB board (see USB board on page 90). h.System board (see System board on page 92). Remove the modem module cable: 1.Release the clips (1) built into the base enclosure that secure the RJ-11 jack. 2.Remove the RJ-11 jack (2) from the clip built into the base enclosure. 3.Remove the modem module cable (3) from the clips and routing channel built into the base enclosure. Reverse this procedure to install the modem module cable. Power connector cable NOTE:The power connector cable is available in the Cable Kit, spare part number 501891-001. Before removing the power connector cable, follow these steps: 1.Shut down the computer. Remove the power connector cable: 1.Remove the power connector cable (1) from the clips and routing channel built into the base enclosure. 2.Remove the Phillips PM2.5×7.0 screw (2) that secures the power connector and bracket to the base enclosure. 3.Remove the power connector bracket (3). 4.Remove the power connector cable (4). The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation. The fan is controlled by a temperature sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high temperature conditions exist. These conditions are affected by high external temperatures, system power consumption, power management/battery conservation configurations, battery fast charging, and software applications. Exhaust air is displaced through the ventilation grill located on the left side of the computer. Before removing the fan/heat sink assembly, follow these steps: 1.Shut down the computer. Remove the fan/heat assembly: 1.Turn the system board upside down, with the expansion port 3 and external monitor port toward you. NOTE:Steps 2 through 4 apply only to computer models equipped with graphics subsystems with discrete memory. 2.Disconnect the fan cable (1) from the system board. 3.Loosen the three Phillips PM2.0×10.0 captive screws (2) that secure the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board. 4.Remove the fan/heat sink assembly (3). NOTE:Due to the adhesive quality of the thermal material located between the fan/heat sink assembly and system board components, it may be necessary to move the fan/heat sink assembly from side to side to detach the assembly. NOTE:Steps 5 through 7 apply only to computer models equipped with graphics subsystems with UMA memory. 5.Disconnect the fan cable (1) from the system board. 6.Loosen the three Phillips PM2.0×10.0 captive screws (2) that secure the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board. 7.Remove the fan/heat sink assembly (3). NOTE:Due to the adhesive quality of the thermal material located between the heat sink and system board components, it may be necessary to move the heat sink from side to side to detach the assembly. NOTE:The thermal material must be thoroughly cleaned from the surfaces of the fan/heat sink assembly and the system board each time the fan/heat sink assembly is removed. Thermal paste is used on the processor (1) and the heat sink section (2) that services it. Thermal pads are used on the Northbridge chip (3), the graphics subsystem chip (4), and the sections of the heat sink (5) that service them. Replacement thermal material is included with all fan/heat sink assembly, system board, and processor spare part kits. NOTE:The thermal material must be thoroughly cleaned from the surfaces of the fan/heat sink assembly and the system board each time the fan/heat sink assembly is removed. Thermal paste is used on the processor (1) and the heat sink section (2) that services it. Thermal pads are used on the Northbridge chip (3) and the section of the heat sink (4) that services it. Replacement thermal material is included with all fan/heat sink assembly, system board, and processor spare part kits.
