To clean print cartridges manually
Poor contact between the print cartridges and the print cartridge cradles can also affect the quality of the 
printout. When this occurs, try cleaning the electrical contacts on the print cartridges and print cartridge 
cradles.
1.Remove the print cartridge from the printer. (See Replacing the print cartridges.)
2.Clean the electrical contacts on the print cartridge cradle with a dry cotton swab.

Replacing the print cartridges
You can check the ink levels from the Toolbox (Windows), the HP Printer Utility (Mac OS), and the Toolbox 
software for PDAs (Pocket PC and Palm OS). For information about using these tools, see Overview of 
printer management tasks.
After removing a print cartridge from its package, install it right away.
CAUTION:HP recognizes customer’s choice, but cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-

2.With the printer turned on, open the front access cover. Wait for the carriage to stop moving. This 
should take only a few seconds.
CAUTION:Only remove or install print cartridges when the print cartridge carriage stops moving.

.Lift the print cartridge latch open and gently remove the print cartridge from its cradle compartment.
4.Insert the new print cartridge into its cradle compartment at the same angle at which you removed the

5.Close the print cartridge latch. If the cartridge is inserted correctly, closing the latch gently pushes the 
cartridge into its cradle compartment. Press the latch to make sure it is seated flat on the cartridge.
6.Close the front access cover.
7.Wait for the carriage to complete the print cartridge initialization routine and return to the home 
position at the left side of the printer before using the printer.

Printing with a single print cartridge
If one of the print cartridges runs out of ink before you can replace it, you can still print with a single print 
cartridge.
NOTE:Printing with one print cartridge might be slower and the print quality might be affected. It is 
recommended to print with both print cartridges. For borderless printing, the tri-color print cartridge must 
be installed.

Replacing the ink service module
The replaceable ink service module holds waste ink from the black print cartridge. When it is almost full, 
the printer lights will prompt you to replace it. See Printer light patterns.
When the ink service module is full, the printer will stop printing. If you have a new ink service module, 
install it immediately by following the instructions that come with it.
