Tips & TricksInserting a piece of cloth between the
screwdriver and keyboard will help
prevent damage to the notebook.6Insert the small flat-blade screwdriver or non-marring tool under the right 
end of the keyboard cover and gently pry it up.
7Pull the old cover off the notebook. You will hear small snapping sounds 
as the cover comes away from the notebook.

Replacing the keyboard
Tools you need to complete this task:
Screws removed during this task:
To replace the keyboard:  
1Complete the steps in “Preparing the notebook” on page 5.
2Remove the keyboard cover by following the instructions in “Replacing 
the keyboard cover” on page 26.
Tips & TricksThe screw hole is marked with a K.3Turn the notebook over so the bottom is facing up.

5Loosen the six memory bay cover screws (these screws cannot be 
removed).
6Use the thumb notch to lift the memory bay cover, then remove it. Be 
careful not to break off the tabs located on the end of the cover opposite 
of the thumb notch.
7Loosen the wireless bay cover screw (this screw cannot be removed), then 
remove the wireless bay cover.

ImportantDepending on the keyboard features, one
or both of these screws may be absent.8Remove the two optional keyboard screws.
9Turn your notebook over so the top is facing up, then open the LCD panel 
to the fully opened position.
10Lift the back edge of the keyboard slightly, then carefully push it toward 
the LCD panel to release the keyboard retaining tabs. Be careful not to 
damage the LCD panel.
11Carefully rotate the keyboard toward you so...

12Lift the black keyboard connector clip and optional EZ Point clip, then 
remove the cables. Be careful not to touch or damage any other 
components.
13Lift the old keyboard away from the notebook.
14Place the new keyboard keys-down on your notebook with the space bar 
away from you.
ImportantThe keyboard cable is correctly oriented if
the cable is not twisted. The EZ Point
cable is correctly oriented if the blue side

18Gently press the keyboard down until it is flat all the way across. The 
keyboard should easily fall into place. Be careful not to damage the 
LC D panel.
19Reinstall the keyboard cover by following the instructions in “Replacing 
the keyboard cover” on page 26.
20Turn the notebook over so the bottom is facing up.
21Replace the screws removed in Step 8.
22Replace the wireless cover, then tighten the screw.

5Use your fingers to unplug the CMOS battery connector from the system 
board. Be careful not to touch or damage any other components.
ImportantUse only CMOS batteries designed for
your Gateway notebook. The
non-conductive sleeve and wires are not
reusable.6Plug the new battery into the system board.

Replacing the LCD panel assembly
Tools you need to complete this task:
Screws removed during this task:
To replace the LCD panel assembly:  
1Complete the steps in “Preparing the notebook” on page 5.
2If the notebook has IEEE 802.11 wireless networking built in, unplug the 
antenna from the IEEE 802.11 wireless card by following the instructions 
in “Replacing the IEEE 802.11 wireless card” on page 18.

5Carefully unplug the LCD video cable from the notebook. Make sure you 
grasp the connector, not the cable.
6Lift up on the video cable retaining clips slightly, then slide the video cable 
from under the clips.
7Taking care to note the cable routing and positions as they are installed 
from Gateway, pull the antenna wires out from under the system board, 
then slide the wires from under the retaining clips.
