WorldWar11foundPolandquicklyoccupiedbyGermanforces.and weaponsproductionperformedbyforcedlaborunderNazicontrol. Qualityofcoursesuffered.TheendingofWWIIresultedinSoviet controlofthispoorlytreatedcountry.Weaponsdesignwasinflu- encedbyIronCurtainrestrictions. Bythelate1950s,thePolishArmydesiredanewsidearm.TheRus- sianTokarov TT-33 pistolwasthenthestandardissuepistolforthe Polishforces. WantingsomeindependencefromfheSovietUnion,theychosenot tosimplyadopt the USSRMakarov,butdesiredtodevelopa weaponoftheirowndesign.AteamofPolisharmyofficersgath- eredtogivebirthtothisnewpistol.Initially.theofficersweredi- videdupontwovariationsofabasicdesign.calfedtheCZAK(an acronymofthedesignerslastnames).Prototypesofthetwovari- antsweremadefortesting.OnewasdubbedthemOdel M[milicyjny-policemodeJ,.theothermodelW(wojskowj- militarymodel. Bytheeany1970s.afewshortcomingstotheoriginal P-64 designhad beenident1f1ed.Theseincludedashortsightradius.smallmagazine capacityandheavyd.oubleactiontriggerpull.In1972someminor modificationsweretothetriggermechanismandthehammerwas givenalargerhammerspur. Thetriggerpullwaslittlechangedandmagazinecapacityremained sixrounds.ThePolishforcesdesiredachangeandaseriesofprototype servicepistolsweremade:P-70.P-75.P-78A.P-78B.etc.Inthelate 1970s.theP-83(0productionversionofthe P-78BI wasadoptedtore- plocetheP-64. TheP-64sawwenover20yearsserviceasthePolishstandardsidearm.. SomearestillencounteredinusebyPolishreservemilitaryandpolice forces.Thepistolisnolongermanufactured.
