    CHAPTER 5: PROCESSOR THERMAL FAN 
    Processor Thermal Fan
    WARNING:  Before  working  inside  your  computer,  read  the  safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional safety best practices  information,  see  the  Regulatory  Compliance  Homepage  at

    CAUTION:  To  avoid  electrostatic  discharge,  ground  yourself  by  using  a wrist  grounding  strap  or  by  periodically  touching  an  unpainted  metal surface (such as a connector on the back of the computer). 
    CAUTION: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell™ is not covered by your warranty. 
    CAUTION: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery  (see  “Removing  the  Battery  Pack”  on  page 11)  before  working inside the computer.

    Removing the Processor Thermal Fan
    Follow the instructions in “Before You Begin” on page 1. 6.
    Remove the battery pack (see “Removing the Battery Pack” on page 2. 11).
    Remove the compartment door (see “Removing the Compartment Door” on 3. page 14).
    Loosen the three captive screws that secure the processor thermal fan to 4. the computer.
    Disconnect the processor thermal fan cable from the system board 5. connector.
    Lift the processor thermal fan off the computer.6. 
    Replacing the Processor Thermal Fan
    Place the processor thermal fan on the computer base.1. 
    Connect the processor thermal fan cable to the system board connector

    Tighten the three captive screws that secure the processor thermal fan to 3. the computer base.
    Replace the compartment door (see “Replacing the Compartment Door” on 4. page 14).
    Replace the battery pack (see “Replacing the Battery Pack” on page 5. 11).
    CAUTION: Before turning on the computer, replace all screws and ensure that  no  stray  screws  remain  inside  the  computer.  Failure  to  do  so  may result in damage to the computer.

    Removing the Coin-Cell Battery
    Follow the instructions in “Before You Begin” on page 1. 6.
    Remove the battery pack (see “Removing the Battery Pack” on page 2. 11).
    Remove the compartment door (see “Removing the Compartment Door” on 3. page 14).
    Disconnect the coin-cell battery cable from the system board connector.4. 
    Lift the coin-cell battery off the computer base.5.

    Place the coin-cell battery in the slot on the computer base.1. 
    Connect the coin-cell battery cable to the system board connector.2. 
    Replace the compartment door (see “Replacing the Compartment Door” on 3. page 14).

    You  can  increase  your  computer  memory  by  installing  memory  modules  on the  system  board.  See  the  specifications  in  your  Mobile  Manual  or  in  the Comprehensive  Specifications  at  support.dell.com  for  information  on  the memory  supported  by  your  computer.  Install  only  memory  modules  that  are supported by your computer.
    NOTE: Memory  modules  purchased  from  Dell  are  covered  under  your 
    computer warranty. 
    Your  computer  has  two  user-accessible  SODIMM  sockets  that  can  be  accessed from the bottom of the computer.

    Removing the Memory Module(s)
    Follow the instructions in “Before You Begin” on page 1. 6.
    Remove the battery pack (see “Removing the Battery Pack” on page 2. 11).
    Remove the compartment door (see “Removing the Compartment Door” on 3. page 14).
    Loosen the captive screw and slide the memory module door out of the 4. computer base.
    CAUTION: If you need to remove memory modules from both connectors, remove the memory module in the upper connector before you remove the module in the lower connector.

    Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the spring-locks on the memory 5. module connector until the module pops up.

    Replacing the Memory Module(s)
    CAUTION:  If  you  need  to  install  memory  modules  in  two  connectors, install  a  memory  module  in  the  lower  connector  before  you  install  a module in the upper connector.
    Align the notch on the memory module with the tab on the memory module 1. connector.
    Insert the module into the memory module connector at a 45-degree angle, 2. and press the module down until it clicks into place. If you do not hear the click, remove the module and reinstall it.
    CAUTION:  If  the  memory  module  door  is  difficult  to  close,  remove  the memory  module  and  reinstall  it.  Forcing  the  memory  module  door  to close may damage your computer. 
    NOTE: If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot.

    Replace and tighten the captive screw that secures the memory module 3. door to the computer base.
    Replace the compartment door (see “Replacing the Compartment Door” on 4. page 14).
    Replace the battery pack (see “Replacing the Battery Pack” on page 5. 11).
    CAUTION: Before turning on the computer, replace all screws and ensure that  no  stray  screws  remain  inside  the  computer.  Failure  to  do  so  may result in damage to the computer.
    Turn on the computer. 6. As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information.
    To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click Start (Windows Vista® logo) > Help and Support > Dell System Information.
