TOREMOVEBLADE 1.Disconnectsparkplugwirefromspark plugandplacewirewhereitcannot comeincontactwithsparkplug. 2.Turnlawnmoweronitsside.Make sureairfilterandcarburetorareup. 3.Useawoodblockbetweenbladeand mowerhousingtopreventbladefrom turningwhenremovingbladebolt. NOTE:Protectyourhandswithgloves and/orwrapbladewithheavycloth. 4.Removebladeboltbyturningcounter- clockwise. 5.Removebladeandattachinghard- ware(bolt,lockwasherandhardened washer). NOTE:Removethebladeadapterand checkthekeyinsidehubofblade adapter.Thekeymustbeingoodcondi- tiontoworkproperly.Replaceadapterif damaged. TOREPLACEBLADE 1.Positionthebladeadapteronthe enginecrankshaft.Besurekeyin adapterandcrankshaftkeywayare aligned. 2.Positionbladeonthebladeadapter aligningthetwo(2)holesintheblade withtheraisedlugsontheadapter. 3.Besurethetrailingedgeofblade (oppositesharpedge)isuptowardthe engine. 4,Installthebladeboltwiththelock washerandhardenedwasherinto bladeadapterandcrankshaft. 5.Useblockofwoodbetweenbladeand lawnmowerhousingandtightenthe bladebolt,turningclockwise. •Therecommendedtighteningtorqueis 35-40ft.Ibs. IMPORTANT:Bladeboltisgrade8heat treated. TOSHARPENBLADE NOTE:Wedonotrecommendsharpen- ingbla_te-butifyoudo,besuretheblade isbalanced. Careshouldbetakentokeeptheblade balanced.Anunbalancedbladewill causeeventualdamagetolawnmoweror engine. •Thebladecanbesharpenedwithafile oronagrindingwheel,Donotattempt tosharpenwhileonthemower. •Tocheckbladebalance,driveanail intoabeamorwall.Leaveaboutone inchofthestraightnailexposed.Place centerholeofbladeovertheheadof 11
thenail.Ifbladeisbalanced,itshould remaininahorizontalposition.Ifeither endoftheblademovesdownward, sharpentheheavyenduntiltheblade isbalanced. Hardened_ihngBladeadapter washeredge GRASSCATCHER •Thegrasscatchermaybehosedwith water,butmustbedrywhenused. •Checkyourgrasscatcheroftenfor damageordeterioration.Through normaluseitwillwear.Ifcatcherneeds replacing,replaceonlywithamanufac- turerapprovedreplacementcatcher. Givethelawnmowermodelnumber whenordering. DRIVEWHEELS Checkfrontdrivewheelseachtime beforeyoumowtobesuretheymove freely. Thewheelsnotturningfreelymeans trash,grasscuttings,etc.areinthedrive wheelareaandmustbecleanedtofree drivewheels. Ifnecessarytocleanthedrivewheels, checkbothfrontwheels. 1.Removehubcaps,hairpincottersand washers. 2.Removewheelsfromwheeladjusters. 3.Removeanytrashorgrasscuttings frominsidethedustcover,pinionand/ ordrivewheelgearteeth. 4.Putwheelsbackinplace. NOTE:Ifaftercleaning,thedrivewheels donotturnfreely,contactyournearest authorizedservicecenter. GEARCASE •Tokeepyourdrivesystemworking properly,thegearcaseandarea aroundthedriveshouldbekeptclean andfreeoftrashbuild-up.Cleanunder thedrivecovertwiceaseason. •Thegearcaseisfilledwithlubricantto theproperlevelatthefactory.Theonly timethelubricantneedsattentionisif servicehasbeenperformedonthe gearcase. •Iflubricantisrequired,useonlyTexaco StarplexPremium1Grease,PartNo. 750369.Donotsubstitute. ENGINE LUBRICATION Useonlyhighqualitydetergentoilrated withAPIserviceclassificationSF-SJ. SelecttheoilsSAEviscositygrade accordingtoyourexpectedoperating temperature. SAEVISCOSITYGRAOES .20=60_ :10°.1__02030 TEMPERATURERANGEANTICIPATEDBEFORENEXTOILCHANGE NOTE:Althoughmulti-viscosityoils (5W30,10W30etc.)improvestartingin coldweather,thesemulti-viscosityoils willresultinincreasedoilconsumption whenusedabove32°RCheckyour engineoillevelmorefrequentlytoavoid possibleenginedamagefromrunning lowonoil. Changetheoilafterevery25hoursof operationoratleastonceayearifthe lawnmowerisnotusedfor25hoursin oneyear. Checkthecrankcaseoillevelbefore startingtheengineandaftereachfive(5) hoursofcontinuoususe.Tightenoilplug securetyeachtimeyouchecktheoil level. 12
TOCHANGEENGINEOIL NOTE:Beforetippinglawnmowerto drainoil,drainfueltankbyrunning engineuntilfueltankisempty. 1.Disconnectsparkplugwirefromspark plugandplacewirewhereitcannot comeincontactwithsparkplug. 2.Removeengineoilcap;layasideona cleansurface. 3,Tiplawnmoweronitssideasshown anddrainoilintoasuitablecontainer. Rocklawnmowerbackandforthto removeanyoiltrappedinsideof engine. 4.Wipeoffanyspilledoilonlawnmower andonsideofengine. 5.Fillenginewithoil.(SeeAddOilin theOperacionsectionofthismanual.) 6.Reconnectsparkplugwiretospark plug. Container AIRFILTER Yourenginewillnotrunproperlyandmay bedamagedbyusingadirtyairfilter. Replacetheairfiltereveryyear,more oftenifyoumowinverydusty,dirty conditions. TOCLEANAIRFILTER 1.Loosenscrewandtiltcovertoremove. 2.Carefullyremovecartridge. 3.Cleanbygentlytappingonaflat surface.Ifverydirty,replacecartridge. _CAUTION:Petroleumsolvents,suchas kerosene,arenottobeusedtoclean cartridge.Theymaycausedeteriorationof thecartridge.Donotoilcartridge.Donot usepressurizedairtocleanordry cartridge. 4.Installcartridge,thenreplacecover makingsurethetabsarealignedwith theslotsinthebackplate.Fasten screwsecurely.Back Slots MUFFLER Inspectandreplacecorrodedmufflerasit couldcreateafirehazardand/ordam- age. SPARKPLUG Changeyoursparkplugeachyearto makeyourenginestarteasierandrun better.Setsparkpluggapat.030inch, CLEANING IMPORTANT;Forbestperformance, keepmowerhousingfreeofbuilt-up grassandtrash.Cleantheundersideof yourmoweraftereachuse. [I,CAUTIONDisconnectsparkplugwire fromsparkplugandplacewirewhereit cannotcomeincontactwiththespark plug. •Cleantheundersideofyourlawn mowerbyscrapingtoremovebuild-up ofgrassandtrash. •Cleanengineoftentokeeptrashfrom accumulating.Acloggedengineruns hotterandshortensenginelife. •Keepfinishedsurfacesandwheelsfree ofallgasoline,oil,etc. •Wedonotrecommendusingagarden hosetocleanlawnmowerunlessthe electricalsystem,muffler,airfilterand carburetorarecoveredtokeepwater out.Waterinenginecanresultin shortenedenginelife. REARDEFLECTOR Thereardeflector,attachedbetweenthe rearwheelsofyourmower,isprovidedto minimizethepossibilitythatobjectswill bethrownoutoftherearofthemowerinto theoperatormowingposition.Ifthe deflectorbecomesdamaged,itshouldbe replaced. TOREMOVE/REPLACEDRIVEBELT 1.Removedrivecover.Removebelt fromgearcasepulleybypushing downonpulleyandrollingbeltoffit. 2.Turnlawnmoweronitssidewithair filterandcarburetorup. 3.Removeblade. 4.Removedebrisshield. 5.Removebeltfromenginepulleyon crankshaft. 6.Installnewbeltbyreversingabove steps. 7.Alwaysusefactoryapprovedbeltto assurefitandlonglife. TOADJUSTHANDLE Thehandlecanbemountedinahighor lowposition.Themountingholesinthe bottomoflowerhandleareoffcenterfor raisingorloweringthehandle. 1.Removeupperhandleandallparts attachedtolowerhandle. 2.Removehairpincottersfromlower handlebracketmountingpin. 3.Squeezelowerhandleintoremoveit frommountingpins. 4.Turnlowerhandleovertoraiseor lowerhandle. 5.Squeezelowerhandleinandposition holesontomountingpinsonhandle bracket. 6.Reassembleupperhandleandall partsremovedfromlowerhandle. _Lower handle DriveBelt cover Push 14
TOASSEMBLEGRASSCATCHER 1.Putgrasscatcherframeintograssbag withrigidpartofbagonthebottom. Makesuretheframehandleisoutside ofthebagtop. 2.Slipvinylbindingsoverframe. NOTE:Ifvinylbindingsaretoostiff,hold theminwarmwaterforafewminutes.If baggetswet,letitdrybeforeusing. _I,CAUTION:Donotrunyourlawnmower withoutclippingdeflectororapproved grasscatcherinplace.Neverattemptto operatethelawnmowerwiththerear doorremovedorproppedopen. Catcher...._- frame handle Frame opening ENGINE ENGINESPEED Yourenginespeedhasbeenfactoryset. Donotattempttoincreaseenginespeed oritmayresultinpersonalinjury.Ifyou believethattheengineisrunningtoofast ortooslow,takeyourlawnmowertoan authorizedservicecenterforrepairand adjustment. CARBURETOR Yourcarburetorhasanon-adjustable fixedmainjetformixturecontrol.Ifyour enginedoesnotoperateproperlydueto suspectedcarburetorproblems,takeyour lawnmowertoanauthorizedservice centerforrepairand/oradjustment. IMPORTANT:Nevertamperwiththe enginegovernor,whichisfactorysetfor properenginespeed.Overspeedingthe engineabovethefactoryhighspeed settingcanbedangerous,ifyouthinkthe engine-governedhighspeedneeds adjusting,contactyournearestautho- rizedservicecenter,whichhasproper equipmentandexperiencetomakeany necessaryadjustments. 15
Immediatelyprepareyourlawnmowerfor storageattheendoftheseasonorifthe unitwillnotbeusedfor30daysormore. LAWNMOWER Whenlawnmoweristobestoredfora periodoftime,cleanitthoroughly,remove alldirt,grease,leaves,etc.Storeina clean,dryarea. 1.Cleanentirelawnmower(See CLEANINGintheMaintenance sectionofthismanual). 2.LubricateasshownintheMainte- nancesectionofthismanual. 3.Besurethatallnuts,bolts,screws, andpinsaresecurelyfastened. Inspectmovingpartsfordamage, breakageandwear.Replaceif necessary. 4.Touchupallrustedorchippedpaint surfaces;sandlightlybeforepainting. HANDLE Youcanfoldyourlawnmowerhandlefor storage. 1.Squeezethebottomendsofthelower handletowardeachotheruntilthe lowerhandleclearsthehandle bracket,thenmovehandleforward. 2.Loosenupperhandlemountingbolts enoughtoallowupperhandletobe foldedback. IMPORTANT:Whenfoldingthehandle forstorageortransportation,besureto foldthehandleasshownoryoumay damagethecontrolcables. •Whensettingupyourhandlefromthe storageposition,thelowerhandlewill automaticallylockintothemowing position. Also,experienceindicatesthatalcohol blendedfuels(calledgasoholorusing ethanolormethanol)canattractmoisture whichleadstoseparationandformation ofacidsduringstorage.Acidicgascan damagethefuelsystemofanengine whileinstorage. 1,Drainthefueltank. 2,Starttheengineandletitrununtilthe fuellinesandcarburetorareempty. •Neveruseengineorcarburetorcleaner productsinthefueltankorpermanent damagemayoccur. •Usefreshfuelnextseason. NOTE:Fuelstabilizerisanacceptable alternativeinminimizingtheformationof fuelgumdepositsduringstorage.Add stabilizertogasolineinfueltankor storagecontainer.Alwaysfollowthemix ratiofoundonstabilizercontainer.Run engineatleast10minutesafteradding stabilizertoallowthestabilizertoreach thecarburetor.Donotdrainthegastank andcarburetorifusingfuelstabilizer. ENGINEOIL Drainoil(withenginewarm)andreplace withcleanengineoil.(SeeENGINEin theMaintenancesectionofthismanual). CYLINDER 1,Removesparkplug. 2,Pouroneounce(29ml)ofoilthrough sparkplugholeintocylinder. 3,Pullstarterhandleslowlyafewtimes todistributeoil. 4,Replacewithnewsparkplug. OTHER •Donotstoregasolinefromone seasontoanother. •Replaceyourgasolinecanifyour canstartstorust.Rustand/ordirtin yourgasolinewillcauseproblems. •Ifpossible,storeyourunitindoors andcoverittogiveprotectionfrom dustanddirt. •Coveryourunitwithasuitable protectivecoverthatdoesnotretain moisture.Donotuseplastic.Plastic cannotbreathewhichallowsconden- sationtoformandwillcauseyourunit 16torust.
