Ifnecessary,replacepaperfilter(donotattempt toclean).Installnewfilteronbase. Slidepre-cleaneroverfilter. Installcoverandwingnut. Tightenwingnutsecurely. CleanEngine Cleanengineperiodically.Removedirtand debriswithaclothorbrush. Frequentlyremovegrassclippings,dirtand debrisfromcoolingfins,airintakescreenand leversandlinkage.Seefigure14.Thiswillhelp ensureadequatecoolingandcorrectengine speed. Cleancooling Figure14 Yearlyorevery25hours,whicheveroccursfirst, removetheblowerhousingandcleantheareas showninfigure14toavoidoverspeeding, overheatingandenginedamage.Cleanmore oftenifnecessary. NOTE:Cleaningwithaforcefulsprayofwaterisnot recommendedaswatercouldcontaminatethefuel system. WARNING:Temperatureofmufflerand nearbyareasmayexceed150°F(65°C). Avoidtheseareas, SparkPlug Cleanthesparkplugandresetthegapto.030 atleastonceaseasonorevery50hoursof operation.Seefigure15.Sparkplug replacementisrecommendedatthestartof eachseason.Refertoenginepartslistfor correctsparkplugtype. Feeler( Plug Figure15 NOTE:Donotsandblastsparkplug.Sparkplug shouldbecleanedbyscrapingorwirebrushingand washingwithacommercialsolvent. Muffler A WARNING:Donotoperatethechipper- shredderwithoutamuffler,ortamperwith theexhaustsystem.Damagedmufflersor sparkarresterscouldcreateafirehazard. Inspectperiodically,andreplaceifnecessary.If yourengineisequippedwithasparkarrester screenassembly,removeevery50hoursfor cleaningandinspection.Replaceifdamaged. & WARNING:Alwaysstopengine, disconnectsparkplugwire,andmoveit awayfromsparkplugbeforeperformingany adjustmentsorrepairs. LUBRICATION Lubricatethepivotpointsonthereleasebar,hopper assembly,chutedeflectorandchipperchuteoncea seasonusingalightoil.Seefigure16 Figure16:LubricationChart 13
REMOVINGTHEFLAILSCREEN Ifthedischargeareabecomesclogged,removethe flailscreenandcleanareaasfollows. Stopengine,makecertainthechipper- shredderhascometoacompletestopand disconnectsparkplugwirefromthesparkplug beforeuncloggingthechute. Removethetwohandknobsoneachsideof thedischargechute(alsocalledthechute deflector). Liftthedischargechuteup,andkeepitoutof theway. Removetwohairpinclipsfromtheclevispins whichextendthroughthehousing.Removethe clevispins,Seefigure17. Pulltheflailscreenfrominsidethehousing. Seefigure17. Cleanthescreenbyscrapingorwashingwith water. Reinstallthescreen. Putthedischargechutebacktoitsoriginal positionandtightenthehandknobs. NOTE:Becertaintoreassembletheflailscreenwith thecurvedsidedown. ChuteDeflector ChipperChute Removetheflailscreenasinstructedinprevious section. Usinga1/2wrench,removethechipperchute byremovingthreehexnutsandwashers.See figure17, Usinga7/16wrench,removethebrace (holdingthechutetotheframe)byremovingthe hexbolts. NOTE:Whenre-assembling,thecuppedwasher goesontheslottowardthebottomofthechipper chutewiththecuppedsideagainstthechute. Rotatetheimpellerassemblybyhanduntilyou locateoneofthetwochipperbladesinthe chipperchuteopening.Removetheblade,using a3/16allenwrenchontheoutsideoftheblade and1/2wrenchontheimpellerassembly (insidethehousing).Seefigure18. Replaceorsharpenblades. Ifsharpening,makecertaintoremoveanequal amountfromeachblade. Reassembleinreverseorder.Makecertain bladesarereassembledwiththesharpedge facingthedirectionshowninfigure18(sharp edgeisassembledtowardtheslottedopeningat thebottom). Torqueboltsandnutsto250-350inch-pounds. ShreddingBlade Theshreddingblademayberemovedforsharpening orreplacementasfollows. 15
Disconnectsparkplugwireandmoveitaway fromsparkplug. Lowerthehopperassembly.Blockupthe housing.Seefigure19. WeldBolt Allen Screw Pipe causedamagetotheunit.Thebladecanbetasted forbalancebybalancingitonaroundshaft screwddverornail.Removemetalfromtheheavy sideuntilitisbalancedevenly.Seefigure20. Removethetwohandknobsandcupped washerswhichsecurethechutedeflector.Raise thechutedeflector. Inserta1/2or3/4diameterpipethroughthe flailscreenintotheimpellertokeepitfrom turning,orremovetheflailscreenandinserta pieceofwood(2x4)intothechuteopening. Removethetwooutsidescrewsontheblade, usinga3/16allenwrenchanda1/2wrench. Removethebladebyremovingthecenterbolt, lockwasherandfiatwasher. ,_WARNING:Usecautionwhenremoving thebladetoavoidcontactingtheweldbolts onthehousing. Whensharpeningtheblade,followtheoriginal angleofgrindasaguide.Itisextremely importantthateachcuttingedgereceivesan equatamountofgrindingtopreventan unbalancedblade. Anunbalancedbladewillcauseexcessive vibrationwhenrotatingathighspeedsandmay ADJUSTINGCARBURETOR A WARNING:Ifanyadjustmentsaremadeto theenginewhiletheengineisrunning(e.g. carburetor),keepclearofallmovingparts. Becarefulofheatedsurfacesandmuffler. Thecarburetorhasbeenpre-setatthefactoryand shouldnotrequireadjustment.However,ifyour enginedoesnotoperateproperlyduetosuspected carburetorproblems,takeyourchipper-shredderto yournearestSEARSservicecenter. ENGINESPEED Theenginespeedonyourchipper-shredderhasbeen setatthefactory.Donotattempttoincreaseengine speedoritmayresultinpersonalinjury.Ifyoubelieve theengineisrunningtoofastortooslow,takeyour chipper-shreddertothenearestSEARSservice centerforrepairandadjustment. TIRES Recommendedoperatingtirepressureis24p.s.i. (sidewalloftiremaygivetiremanufacturers recommendedpressure).Equaltirepressureshould bemaintainedonbothtires. WARNING:Excessivepressurewhenseating beadsmaycausetire/rimassemblytoburstwith forcesufficienttocauseseriousinjury. 16
Prepareyourchipper-shredderforstorageattheend oftheseasonoriftheunitwillnotbeusedfor30days ormore. A WARNING:Neverstoremachinewithfuel inthefueltankinsideofbuildingwhere fumesmayreachanopenflameorspark, orwhereignitionsourcesarepresentsuch ashotwaterendspaceheaters,furnaces, clothesdryers,stoves,electricmotors,etc. Ayearlycheck-upbyyourlocalSearsservicecenter isagoodwaytomakecertainyourchipper-shredder willprovidemaximumperformanceforthenext season. CHIPPER-SHREDDER Cleanthechipper-shredderthoroughly. Wipeunitwithanoiledragtopreventrust(usea lightoilorsilicone). ENGINE IMPORTANT;Itisimportanttopreventgumdeposits fromforminginessentialfuelsystempartssuchas carburetor,fuelfilter,fuelhose,ortankduring storage.Also,experienceindicatesthatalcohol blendedfuels(calledgasoholorusingethanolor methanol)canattractmoisturewhichleadsto separationandformationofacidsduringstorage. Acidicgascandamagethefuelsystemofanengine whileinstorage. Drainthefueltank. Starttheengineandletitrununtilthefuellines andcarburetorareempty. Draincarburetorbypressingupwardonbowl drainwhichislocatedbelowthecarburetor. Neveruseengineorcarburetorcleaner productsinthefueltankorpermanentdamage mayoccur. Usefreshfuelnextseason. NOTE:Fuelstabilizerisanacceptablealternativein minimizingtheformationoffuelgumdepositsduring storage. Addstabilizertogasolineinfueltankorstorage container. Alwaysfollowthemixratiofoundonstabilizer container. Runengineatleast10minutesafteradding stabilizertoallowthestabilizertoreachthe carburetor. Donotdrainthegastankandcarburetorifusing fuelstabilizer.Drainalltheoilfromthe crankcase(thisshouldbedoneaftertheengine hasbeenoperatedandisstillwarm)andrefill thecrankcasewithfreshoil. Ifyouhavedrainedthefueltank,protectthe insideoftheengineasfollows. Removesparkplug,pourapproximately1/2 ounce(approximatelyonetablespoon)ofengine oilintocylinderandcrankslowlytodistributeoil. Replacesparkplug. OTHER Donotstoregasolinefromoneseasonto another. Replaceyourgasolinecanifyourcanstartsto rust.Rustand/ordirtinyourgasolinewillcause problems.Storeunitinaclean,dryarea.Donot storenexttocorrosivematerials,suchas fertilizer. NOTE;ffstoringinanunventilatedormetalstorage shed,becertaintorustprooftheequipmentbycoating withalightoilorsilicone. 17
