57 Routine Maintenance Cleaning Your Printer This section describes the cleaning procedure that is needed to maintain your printer. „Cleaning the Exterior of the Printer Be sure to use a soft cloth such as eyeglas ses cleaning cloth and wipe off dirt on the surface with it gently. Smooth out wrinkles on the cloth if necessary before cleaning. „ Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller (Roller Cleaning) Clean the paper feed roller if paper is not fed pr operly. Cleaning the paper feed roller will wear the roller, so perform this only when necessary. 1Make sure that the printer is on and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray and Cassette. 2Press the Open button to open the Paper Ou tput Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Press the Paper Feed Switch to select the paper source to clean. 4Open the printer properties dialog box. 5Click the Maintenance tab and then Roller Cleaning . 6Confirm the displayed message, and then click OK. The Paper Feed Roller will rotate as they clean. 7Make sure that the paper feed roller stops rotating. When the message appears, load three sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the paper source you selected in step 3. Caution zDo not use tissue paper, paper towels, or similar materials for cleaning. Paper tissue powders or fine threads may remain inside the printer and cause problems such as a blocked Print Head and poor printing results. Use a soft cloth to avoid scratching the components. z Never use volatile liquids such as thinners, benzene, acetone, or any other chemical cleaner to clean the printer, as this may cause a malfunction or damage the printer’s surface. Caution Be sure to turn off the power and disconnect the power cord before cleaning the printer. ImportantzWhen cleaning the exterior of the printer, do not use tissue paper, rough-textured cloth, or similar materials, as this may scratch the surface. z Never use neutral detergent or volatile liquids such as thinners, benzene, acetone, or any other chemical cleaner, as this may damage the surface. Note Make sure that the Inner Cover is closed.
58Routine Maintenance 8Confirm the displayed message and click OK. The paper that is loaded in the printer will feed through the printer and be ejected. 9Confirm the displayed message and click OK. If the problem is not resolved, wipe the paper feed roller (A) located on the right side inside the Rear Tray with a moistened cotton swab or the li ke. Rotate the roller (A) manually as you clean it. Do not touch the roller with your fingers; rota te it with the cotton swab. If this does not solve the problem, contact your Canon Service representative. 1Make sure that the printer is on and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray and Cassette. 2Press the Open button to open the Paper Ou tput Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Press the Paper Feed Switch to select the paper source to clean. 4Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility dialog box. 5Make sure that Cleaning is selected in the pop-up menu. 6Click Roller Cleaning . 7Confirm the displayed message and click OK. The Paper Feed Roller will rotate as they clean. (A)

When the message appears, load three sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the paper source you selected in step 3. 9Confirm the displayed message, and then click OK. The paper that is loaded in the printer will feed through the printer and be ejected. To always get best quality printing result, per iodical cleaning of the inside of the printer is recommended. Important When using Photo Paper Plus Double Sided PP-101D, be sure to clean the inside of the printer before printing. (A)
60Routine Maintenance zCleaning with the Printer Driver (Bottom Plate Cleaning) 1Make sure that the printer is on and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray. 2Press the Open button to open the Paper Ou tput Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Fold a single sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in half widthwise, and then unfold the paper. 4Load this and only this sheet of paper in the Rear Tray with the open side to the front. Notez Make sure that the Inner Cover is closed. Cleaning the Inside of the Printer without a Computer z The inside of the printer can also be cleaned without a computer; it can be performed from the printer itself. 1. Make sure that the printer is on and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray. 2. Press the Open button to open the Paper Output Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3. Fold a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in half widthwise, and then unfold it. 4. Load this and only this sheet of paper in the Rear Tray with the open side to the front. 5. Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button and release it when the POWER lamp flashes green five times. The paper cleans the inside of the printer as it feeds through the printer. Check the folded part of the ejected paper. If it is smudged with ink, perform Bottom Plate Cleaning again. If the problem is not resolved after performing cleaning twice, the protrusions inside the printer may be stained. Clean them according to instructions. See “Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Printer” on page 62. z When performing Bottom Plate Cleaning again, make sure to use a new piece of paper. (A) Load the paper after unfolding it. (A)

Important z Even if the Cassette is selected as the paper source, paper will be fed from the Rear Tray. z Do not perform any other operation while the bottom plate is being cleaned. Note When performing Bottom Plate Cleaning again, make sure to use a new piece of paper. Caution Be sure to turn off the power and disconnect the power cord before cleaning the printer.

Take the appropriate action described in the message. The message may vary depending on the version of your Windows operating system. Note This section mainly describes the methods of printer operation for troubleshooting. To handle problems using your computer, refer to “Troubleshooting” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual. For details on how to view the on-screen manuals, see “Reading the On-screen Manuals” on page 86.
64Troubleshooting Cannot Install the Printer Driver CauseAction Unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen. If you were unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen, follow the procedure below to reinstall the printer driver. (1) Click Cancel on the Printer Connection screen. (2) Click Start Over on the Installation Failure screen. (3) Click Back on the screen that appears next. (4) Click Exit on the PIXMA XXX screen (where “ XXX” is your printer’s name), then remove the CD-ROM. (5) Turn the printer off. (6) Restart the computer. (7) Make sure you have no application software running, including anti-virus software. (8) Follow the procedure described in your setup sheet to reinstall the printer driver. Installation does not start automatically when the Setup CD-ROM is inserted into your computer’s disc drive. (1) Click Start then Computer . In Windows XP, Click Start then My Computer . In Windows 2000, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. (2) Double-click the CD-ROM icon on the displayed window. NoteTo use the Run command to start the setup program, specify your disc drive and then the name of the setup program, MSETUP4.EXE. The drive letter of the disc drive depends on your computer. Double-click the CD-ROM icon on your desktop to start installation. If the CD-ROM icon is not displayed, restart your computer. If the icon is still not displayed, try different disks and see if they are displayed. If other disks are displayed, there is a problem with the Setup CD-ROM. Contact a Canon Service representative. Installation procedure not followed correctly. Follow the procedure described in your setup sheet for proper installation. If the drivers were not installed correctly, uninstall the printer driver, restart your computer, and then reinstall the drivers. Refer to the PC Printing Guide on- screen manual. NoteIf the installer was forced to be terminated due to an Windows error, the system may be in an unstable condition and you may not be able to install the drivers. Restart your computer before reinstalling.
65 Troubleshooting Cannot Connect to Computer Properly „ Printing Speed Is Slow / USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Connection Does Not Work „“This Device Can Perform Faster” Message Is Displayed CauseAction Your system environment is not fully compatible with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed. If your system environment is not fully compatible with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, the printer will operate at a lower speed provided under USB 1.1. In this case, the printer operates properly but printing speed may slow down due to communication speed. Check the following to ensure that your system environment supports USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection. z The USB port on your computer supports USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection. z The USB cable, and the USB hub if you are using one, support USB 2.0 Hi- Speed connection. Be sure to use a certified USB 2.0 Hi-Speed cable. We recommend the cable to be no longer than around 10 feet / 3 meters. z The operating system of your computer supports USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection. Obtain and install the latest update for your computer. z The USB 2.0 Hi-Speed driver operates properly. Obtain the latest version of the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed driver compatible with your hardware and install it on your computer. ImportantFor details on USB 2.0 Hi-Speed of your system environment, contact the manufacturer of your computer, USB cable, or USB hub. CauseAction Your system environment is not fully compatible with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed. Your system environment is not compatible with USB 2.0. See “Printing Speed Is Slow / USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Connection Does Not Work” on page 65.
66Troubleshooting Print Results Not Satisfactory If the print result is not satisfactory such as white streaks, misaligned lines, and uneven colors, confirm the paper and print quality settings first. z Check 1: Do the page size and media type settings match the size and type of the loaded paper? When these settings are incorrect, you cannot obtain a proper print result. If you are printing a photograph or an illustration, incorrect paper type setting may reduce the quality of printout color. Also, if you print with an incorrect paper type setting, the printed surface may be scratched. In borderless printing, uneven coloring may occur depending on the combination of the paper type setting and the loaded paper. z Check 2: Did you set the print quality setting appropriately? Select a print quality option suitable to the paper and image for printing. If you notice blurs or uneven colors, increase the print quality setting and try printing again. The method to confirm the paper and print qualit y settings differs depending on what you do with your printer. z Check 3: If the problem is not resolved, there may be other causes.
