37 Routine Maintenance 1Make sure that the printer is on. 2Open the Front Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility dialog box. 4Start Print Head Deep Cleaning. (1)Make sure that Cleaning is selected in the pop-up menu. (2) Click Deep Cleaning . (3) Select the ink group to be deeply cleaned. (4) Click OK. Print Head Deep Cleaning starts when the POWER lamp starts flashing green. Do not perform any other operations until Print Head Deep Cleaning finishes. This takes about 100 seconds. 5Check the condition of the Print Head. (1) Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Rear Tray and set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left. For details on the Paper Thickness Lever, refer to “Front View” in “Main Components” of the User’s Guide on-screen manual. (2) Print the nozzle check pattern to check the print head condition. See “Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 30. If a particular color is not printed properly, replace the ink tank of that color. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 23. (3) If the print head nozzles are still not clean, turn off the printer and perform another Print Head Deep Cleaning after 24 hours. (4) If this does not solve the problem, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact your Canon Service representative. Note Clicking Initial Check Items displays the items to be checked before deep cleaning. (3)(4)
38Routine Maintenance Aligning the Print Head If ruled lines are printed misaligned or print result s are otherwise unsatisfactory, adjust the print head position. 1Make sure that the printer is on and then l oad two sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Rear Tray. Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left. For details on the Paper Thickness Lever, refer to “Front View” in “Main Components” of the User’s Guide on-screen manual. 2Open the Front Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Open the printer properties dialog box. 4Print the pattern. (1)Click the Maintenance tab. (2) Click Print Head Alignment . (3) Confirm the displayed message and click Print Head Alignment . The print head alignment pattern is printed. Important You cannot feed paper from the Front Tray when performing Print Head Alignment. Always load paper in the Rear Tray. Note The print head alignment pattern is printed in black and blue only. Important You cannot print the print head alignment pattern if paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded. Be sure to use A4 or Letter-sized plain paper. Important Do not open the Top Cover while printing. Note Clicking Print Alignment Value prints the current settings and finishes Print Head Alignment. (1) (2)
39 Routine Maintenance (4) After the pattern is printed, click Ye s. The dialog for entering a print head alignment value is displayed. 5Look at the first printout and adjust the print head position. (1) Check the printed patterns and select the number of the pattern in column A that has the least noticeable streaks. (A) Less noticeable vertical white streaks (B) More noticeable vertical white streaks (2) Repeat the procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for column K, then click OK. (3) Confirm the displayed message and click OK. The second pattern is printed. Do not open the Top Cover while printing. Note If it is difficult to pick the best pattern, pick the setting that produces the least noticeable vertical white streaks. (A) (B)

44Routine Maintenance Cleaning Your Printer This section describes the cleaning procedure that is needed to maintain your printer. „Cleaning the Exterior of the Printer Be sure to use a soft cloth such as eyeglas ses cleaning cloth and wipe off dirt on the surface with it gently. Smooth out wrinkles on the cloth if necessary before cleaning. „ Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller (Roller Cleaning) Clean the paper feed roller if paper is not fed pr operly. Cleaning the paper feed roller will wear the roller, so perform this only when necessary. z Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Rear Tray Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Rear Tray consumes it, so perform this procedure only when necessary. 1Make sure that the printer is on and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray and Front Tray. 2Open the Paper Output Tray, and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Open the printer properties dialog box. 4Click the Maintenance tab and then Roller Cleaning . 5Confirm the displayed message, and then click OK. The Paper Feed Roller will rotate as they clean. 6Make sure that the paper feed roller stops rotating. When the message appears, load three sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Rear Tray. Caution zDo not use tissue paper, paper towels, or similar materials for cleaning. Paper tissue powders or fine threads may remain inside the printer and cause problems such as a blocked Print Head and poor printing results. Use a soft cloth to avoid scratching the components. z Never use volatile liquids such as thinners, benzene, acetone, or any other chemical cleaner to clean the printer, as this may cause a malfunction or damage the printer’s surface. Caution Be sure to turn off the power and disconnect the power cord before cleaning the printer. ImportantzWhen cleaning the exterior of the printer, do not use tissue paper, rough-textured cloth, or similar materials, as this may scratch the surface. z Never use neutral detergent or volatile liquids such as thinners, benzene, acetone, or any other chemical cleaner, as this may damage the surface.
45 Routine Maintenance 7Confirm the displayed message and click OK. The paper that is loaded in the printer will feed through the printer and be ejected. 8Confirm the displayed message and click OK. If the problem is not resolved, wipe the paper feed roller (A) located on the right side inside the Rear Tray with a moistened cotton swab or the li ke. Rotate the roller (A) manually as you clean it. Do not touch the roller with your fingers; rota te it with the cotton swab. If this does not solve the problem, contact your Canon Service representative. 1Make sure that the printer is on and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray and Front Tray. 2Open the Front Tray, and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility dialog box. 4Make sure that Cleaning is selected in the pop-up menu. 5Click Roller Cleaning . 6Confirm the displayed message and click OK. The Paper Feed Roller will rotate as they clean. 7Make sure that the paper feed roller stops rotating. When the message appears, load three sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Rear Tray. 8Confirm the displayed message, and then click OK. The paper that is loaded in the printer will feed through the printer and be ejected. (A)

If this does not solve the problem, contact your Canon Service representative. z Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Front Tray 1Turn off the printer. 2 Load five or more sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Front Tray. 3Hold the Rear Cover Lever and then press to the right and pull to remove the Rear Cover. Note Paper is loaded to aid the cleaning process and will not be printed on. (A)
