ENG-10 6. Power Focus (PF) Mode Using the playback ring enables smooth focus change. This is a useful feature for changing focus when shooting movies. When the playback ring is rotated in a certain direction, focus changes in the same direction as when the focusing ring is rotated. You can make a 2-step change in focus shift speed depending on the angle that the playback ring is rotated to. With the focus preset switch set to OFF, set the focus mode switch to PF. Rotate the playback ring to change the focus. COPY
ENG-11 7. Zooming To zoom, rotate the zoom ring. Be sure to finish zooming before focusing. Zooming after focusing can affect the focus. COPY
ENG-12 8. Image Stabilizer You can use the image stabilizer in AF, PF, or MF mode. Also, the Image Stabilizer can be used regardless of the internal extender setting (either 1x or 1.4x). Set the STABILIZER switch to ON. ●●If you are not going to use the image stabilizer function, set the switch to OFF. Select the stabilizer mode. ●● MODE 1: Corrects vibrations in all directions. It is mainly effective for shooting still subjects. ●●MODE 2: Corrects vertical camera shake during following shots in a horizontal direction, and corrects horizontal camera shake during following shots in a vertical direction. ●● MODE 3: Corrects vibration only during exposure. During panning shots, corrects vibration during exposure only in one direction the same as MODE 2. First press the shutter button down halfway, then press down all the way to take the picture. ●● MODE 1, 2: Press the shutter button down halfway to stabilize the image in the viewfinder and enable stabilization. ●● MODE 3: Press the shutter down halfway to initiate computation of stabilization, then press down all the way to enable stabilization. ENG-13 9. Tips on Using the Image Stabilizer ●●In semi-darkened areas such as indoors or outdoors at night. ●● In locations where flash photography is prohibited, such as art museums and theater stages. ●● In situations where your footing is uncertain. ●● In situations where fast shutter settings cannot be used. ●● When panning subjects in motion. ● MODE 3 ●●Since camera shake is stabilized only during exposure, following a subject is easier such as when shooting a fast and irregularly moving player during sports photography. ● MODE 1● MODE 2 OFF ON OFFON The image stabilizer for this lens is effective for hand-held shots in the following conditions. ENG-14 Tips on Using the Image Stabilizer ●●The Image Stabilizer cannot compensate for a blurred shot caused by a subject that moved. ●● Set the STABILIZER switch to OFF when you are taking pictures using the Bulb setting (long exposures). If the STABILIZER switch is set to ON, the image stabilizer function may introduce errors. ●●The Image Stabilizer might not be fully effective in the following cases: • You shoot from a violently moving vehicle. • You move the camera dramatically for a panning shot in Mode 1. ●● The Image Stabilizer consumes more power than normal shooting, so fewer shots can be taken if you use the function. ●● The image stabilizer operates for about two seconds even when your finger is off the shutter button. Do not remove the lens while the stabilizer is in operation. This will cause a malfunction. ●● With the EOS-1V/HS, 3, ELAN 7E/ELAN 7/30/33, ELAN 7NE/ELAN 7N/30V/33V, ELAN II/ ELAN II E/50/50E, REBEL 2000/300, IX, IX Lite/ IX7, and D30, the Image Stabilizer will not work during self-timer operation. ●● Please refer to the Camera/Extender Compatibility Chart (p.25) for information regarding IS operation when using external extenders. ●●Using a tripod also stabilizes the image. However, depending on the kind of tripod and shooting conditions, sometimes it may be better to turn off the Image Stabilizer function. ●● The stabilizer is equally effective for hand- held photography and photography with a monopod. The Image Stabilizer effect may be reduced, however, depending on the shooting environment. ●● Depending on the camera there may be image shake, such as after releasing the shutter. However, this does not affect shooting. ●● If you set the camera’s Custom Function to change the assigned button to operate the AF, the Image Stabilizer will operate when you press the newly assigned AF button. ENG-15 10. Internal Extender Switch The extender switch lever allows you to set the focal distance of the lens to 1.4x. Slide the extender switch lock toward the front of the lens. ●● This allows the extender switch lever to move. Use the extender switch lever to select a focal distance of either 1x or 1.4x. ●●This allows you to change the focal distance of the lens to either 1x or 1.4x. Slide the extender switch lock toward the back of the lens. ●● This locks the extender switch lever in place. The extender switch lock prevents the extender switch lever from being moved inadvertently. It does not secure the switch lever to the side edge. Be sure to use the lock even when the switch lever is set at 1x in order to prevent it from being moved inadvertently. When the internal extender is used (set to 1.4x), the AF speed will become slower to retain proper control. COPY

Not doing so may prevent the camera or lens from working properly*. (p.17) ●●When using the lens with Group 2 camerasThe internal extender switch can be moved regardless of shooting style setting (shooting with the viewfinder, Live View shooting, and movie shooting) by pressing the shutter button halfway while the camera and lens are not in operation. Not doing so may prevent the camera or lens from working properly*. (p.17) * There are times when an error message will be displayed and shooting operation is prevented. If this occurs, please turn the camera OFF and then ON. Although shooting is possible, the AF function may not work properly. Also, there are times when images will not be processed correctly by the camera’s internal image correction function or by DPP software since accurate lens information is not recorded. COPY
ENG-17 Precautions for Using the Internal Extender●●Please do not move the internal extender switch in any of the following situations or when the camera is in operation. Doing so will cause the camera or lens to malfunction. ●• Wh en the shutter button is pressed half way down. (not applicable to Group 2 cameras) ●•Wh en the shutter button is pressed all the way down. ●•Wh en the lens or camera is in operation (during Auto Focus, Image Stabilization*, exposure, continuous shooting, use of the focus preset, power focus operation, etc.). ●• Wh en the camera is set to Live View shooting. (not applicable to Group 2 cameras) ●•Wh en the camera is set to Movie Shooting. (not applicable to Group 2 cameras) If you have moved the internal extender switch in any of the situations listed above, please be sure to turn the camera OFF. Then, move the switch back to the correct position when the viewfinder is activated, and when the camera and lens are not in operation. ●● When moving the internal extender switch, please wait around two seconds before switching to different shooting styles (shooting with the viewfinder, Live View shooting, and movie shooting). Not doing so may result in an error message being displayed (ERR01) and prevent shooting operation. Turn the camera OFF and then ON to clear the error message. ●● Be sure that the extender switch lever is positioned correctly. Not positioning the lever correctly will create shadows in images and cause AF, AE, and other functions to not work properly. ●● When set to 1.4x, the amount of light is reduced where the focal length was extended (the f-number becomes one step darker). Therefore, please adjust the exposure after switching to the 1.4x setting. ●● The focus position may be altered due to changing the internal extender setting. Therefore, please adjust the focus after changing the internal extender setting. ●● When the internal extender setting is changed, the camera will display an aperture value between f/4 and f/5.6 (maximum aperture). However, the aperture value displayed will not change when the lens is not in operation or when the lens shuts down in order to save power. When this occurs, the correct aperture value can be displayed by pressing the shutter button halfway to reactivate the lens. * The Image Stabilizer will remain in operation for around two seconds after lifting your finger off of the shutter button. ENG-18 12. Hood The special hood that comes with this lens cuts out unwanted light and protects the front of the lens from rain, snow, and dust. To attach the hood, loosen the hood lock knob by turning it counterclockwise. Fit the hood onto the lens’s hood mount, and tighten the lock knob to fix it in place. Use the same procedure, in reverse, to remove the hood. 11. Infinity Compensation Mark For accurate focusing in MF on subjects at infinity distance, look through the viewfinder or at the camera’s LCD display while rotating the focusing ring. To compensate for shifting of the infinity focus point that results from changes in temperature. The infinity position at normal temperature is the point at which the vertical line of the distance scale L mark is aligned with the distance index.
