162 Autofocus can fail to achieve focus (the focus confirmation light < o> blinks) with certain subjec ts such as the following: Subjects difficult to focus Low-contrast subjects Example: Blue sky, solid-color walls, etc. Subjects in low light Extremely backlit or reflective subjects Example: Car with a reflective body, etc. When both near and far subjects are covering the AF points Example: Animal in a cage, etc. Repetitive patterns Example: Skyscraper windows, computer keyboards, etc. In such cases, do one of the following: (1) With One-Shot AF, focus an object at the same distance as the subject and lock the focus before recomposing. (p.46) (2) Set the lens focus mode switch to < MF> and focus manually. When Autofocus Fails If an Extender (sold separately) is at tached and the maximum aperture of the lens is f/5.6 or smaller (larger f/number), AF will not be possible (except Live mode AF). For details, see the Extender’s instruction manual. For the cases AF can fail to achieve focus with Live mode AF, see page 106. H73_10.fm Page 162 Thursday, November 15, 2007 9:28 PM

165 Remote Control Shooting If you take a picture without looking at the viewfinder, light entering the eyepiece can throw off the exposure. To prevent this, use the eyepiece cover attached to the camera strap. 1Remove the eyecup. Push the bottom of the eyecup upward. 2Attaching the eyepiece cover. Slide the eyepiece cover down into the eyepiece groove to attach it. Using the Eyepiece Cover H73_10.fm Page 165 Monday, November 12, 2007 3:44 PM
166 Basically operates like a built-in flash for easy operation. When an EX-series Speedlite is attached to the camera, almost all the autoflash control is done by the camera. In other words, it is like a high- output flash attached externally in place of the built-in flash. For detailed instructions, see the EX-series S peedlite’s instruction manual. This camera is a Type-A camera that can use all the features of EX-series Speedlites. External Speedlites EOS-dedicated, EX- series Speedlites Shoe-mount Speedlites Macro Lites Only [E-TTL II ] and [Flash exp. comp ] can be settable for flash function settings with an EX-series Speedlite not controllable by the camera. (For some EX-series Speedlites, [ Shutter sync.] can also be settable.) H73_10.fm Page 166 Monday, November 12, 2007 3:44 PM
167 External Speedlites With an EZ/E/EG/ML/TL-series Speedlite set in the TTL or A-TTL autoflash mode, the flash can be fired at full output only. Set the camera’s shooting mode to manual exposure or aperture-priority AE and shoot. When using a Speedlite which has m anual flash mode, shoot in the manual flash mode. With an EX-series Speedlite set to TTL autoflash with the flash’s Custom Function, the flash will fire at full output only. Sync Speed The camera can synchronize with compact, non-Canon flash units at 1/200 sec. or slower. Be sure to test the flash unit beforehand to make sure it synchronizes properly with the camera. Cautions for Live View shooting A non-Canon flash will not fire during Live View shooting. Canon Speedlites other than the EX-series Using Non-Canon Flash Units If the camera is used with a flash unit or flash accessory dedicated to another camera brand, the camera may not operate properly and malfunction may result. Do not attach a high-voltage flash unit on the camera’s hot shoe. It might not work. H73_10.fm Page 167 Monday, November 12, 2007 3:44 PM
