P Mode
Initial Preparations
Prepare for shooting as follows.
Attaching the Strap
zzThread the end of the strap through the 
strap hole (), and then pull the other 
end of the strap through the loop on the 
threaded end (
).
zzThe strap can also be attached to the left 
side of the camera.
Holding the Camera
zzPlace the strap around your wrist.
zzWhen shooting, keep your arms close to 
your body and hold the camera securely 
to prevent it from moving. If you have 
raised
	the	flash,	do	not	rest	your	fingers	on it.
Charging the Batter y Pack
Before use, charge the battery pack with the included charger. Be sure to 
charge the battery pack initially, because the camera is not sold with the 
battery pack charged.
1 Insert the battery pack.
zzAfter aligning the   marks on the battery 
pack and charger, insert the battery pack 
by pushing it in (
) and down ().
2 Charge the battery pack.
zzCB-2LY: Flip out the plug () and plug 
the charger into a power outlet ().
zzCB-2LYE: Plug the power cord into the 
charger, then plug the other end into a 
power outlet.
zzThe charging lamp turns orange and 
charging begins.
zzWhen	charging	is	finished,	the	lamp	turns	green.

P Mode
3 Remove the battery pack.
zzAfter unplugging the battery charger, 
remove the battery pack by pushing it in 
(
) and up ().
•	 To protect the battery pack and keep it in optimal condition, do not 
charge it continuously for more than 24 hours.
•	 For battery chargers that use a power cord, do not attach the 
charger or cord to other objects. Doing so could result in malfunction 
or damage to the product.
•	 For details on charging time and the number of shots and recording time \
possible with a fully charged battery pack, see “Number of Shots/Reco\
rding 
Time, Playback Time” (=
  205).
•	 Charged battery packs gradually lose their charge, even when they are no\
t 
used. Charge the battery pack on (or immediately before) the day of us\
e.
•	 The
	charger	can	be	used	in	areas	with	100	–	240	V	AC	power	(50/60	Hz).	For	power outlets in a different format, use a commercially available adapter for 
the plug. Never use an electrical transformer designed for traveling, wh\
ich may 
damage the battery pack.
Inserting the Batter y Pack and Memor y Card
Insert the included battery pack and a memory card (sold separately).
Note that before using a new memory card (or a memory card formatted 
in another device), you should format the memory card with this camera \
(=
  160).
1	 Check	the	card’s	write-protect	tab.
zzRecording is not possible on memory 
cards with a write-protect tab when the 
tab is in the locked (downward) position. 
Slide the tab up until it clicks into the 
unlocked position.
2 Open the cover.
zzSlide the cover () and open it ().
3 Insert the battery pack.
zzWhile pressing the battery lock in the 
direction of the arrow, insert the battery 
pack as shown and push it in until it clicks 
into the locked position.
zzIf you insert the battery pack facing the 
wrong way, it cannot be locked into the 
correct
	position.	Always	confirm	that	the	battery pack is facing the right way and

P Mode
4 Insert the memory card.
zzInsert the memory card facing as shown 
until it clicks into the locked position.
zzMake sure the memory card is facing the 
right way when you insert it. Inserting 
memory cards facing the wrong way may 
damage the camera.
5 Close the cover.
zzLower the cover () and hold it down as 
you slide it, until it clicks into the closed 
position (
).
•	 For guidelines on how many shots or hours of recording can be saved on o\
ne 
memory card, see “Number of 4:3 Shots per Memory Card” ( =  205).

Removing the Battery Pack and Memory Card
Remove the battery pack.
zzOpen the cover and press the battery 
lock in the direction of the arrow.
zzThe battery pack will pop up.
Remove the memory card.
zzPush the memory card in until it clicks, 
and then slowly release it.
zzThe memory card will pop up.

Setting the Date and Time
Set the current date and time correctly as follows if the [Date/Time] screen 
is displayed when you turn the camera on. Information you specify this w\
ay 
is recorded in image properties when you shoot, and it is used when you \
manage images by shooting date or print images showing the date.
You can also add a date stamp to shots, if you wish ( =
  40).
1 Turn the camera on.
zzPress the power button.
zzThe [Date/Time] screen is displayed.
2 Set the date and time.
zzPress the  buttons to choose an 
option.
zzPress the  buttons or turn the 
 dial to specify the date and time.
zzWhen	finished,	press	the	 button.
3 Set the home time zone.
zzPress the  buttons or turn the 
 dial to choose your home time zone.
4 Finish the setup process.
zzPress the 	button	when	finished.	After	a	confirmation	message,	the	setting	screen is no longer displayed.
zzTo turn off the camera, press the power 
button.
•	 Unless you set the date, time, and home time zone, the [Date/Time] 
screen will be displayed each time you turn the camera on. Specify 
the correct information.
•	 To set daylight saving time (1 hour ahead), choose [] in step 2 and then 
choose [] by pressing the  buttons or turning the  dial.
•	 You can also set the date and time by touching the desired option on the \
screen in step 2 and then touching [ o][p], followed by [
]. Similarly, you 
can also set your home time zone by touching [ q][r] on the screen in step 3, 
followed by [

P Mode
•	 Date/time settings can be retained for about 3 weeks by the camera’s built-in 
date/time battery (backup battery) after the battery pack is removed.
•	 The date/time battery will be charged in about 4 hours once you insert a\
 
charged battery pack or connect the camera to an AC adapter kit (sold 
separately, =
  168), even if the camera is left off.
•	 Once the date/time battery is depleted, the [Date/Time] screen will be 
displayed when you turn the camera on. Set the correct date and time as \
described in “Setting the Date and Time” (=
  15).
Display Language
Change the display language as needed.
1 Enter Playback mode.
zzPress the  button.
2 Access the setting screen.
zzPress and hold the < m> button, and 
then immediately press the < n> 
button.
Changing the Date and TimeAdjust the date and time as follows.
1 Access the camera menu.
zzPress the  button.
2 Choose [Date/Time].
zzMove the zoom lever to choose the [ 3] 
tab.
zzPress the  buttons or turn the 
 dial to choose [Date/Time], and then 
press the  button.
3 Change the date and time.
zzFollow step 2 in “Setting the Date and 
Time” (=  15) to adjust the settings.
zzPress the  button to close the

3 Set the display language.
zzPress the  buttons or 
turn the  dial to choose a language, 
and then press the  button.
zzOnce the display language has been set, 
the setting screen is no longer displayed.
•	 The current time is displayed if you wait too long in step 2 after press\
ing the 
 button before you press the  button. In this case, press the 
 button to dismiss the time display and repeat step 2.
•	 You can also change the display language by pressing the < n> button 
and choosing [Language 
] on the [3] tab.
•	 You can also set the display language by touching a language on the scree\
n in 
step 3 and then touching it again.
Still ImagesMovies
Tr ying the Camera Out
Follow these instructions to turn the camera on, shoot still images or 
movies, and then view them.
Shooting (Smart Auto)
For	fully	automatic	selection	of	the	optimal	settings	for	specific	scenes,	simply let the camera determine the subject and shooting conditions.
1 Turn the camera on.
zzPress the power button.
zzThe startup screen is displayed.
2 Enter [] mode.
zzSet the mode dial to [].
zzAim the camera at the subject. The 
camera will make a slight clicking noise 
as it determines the scene.
zzIcons representing the scene and image 
stabilization mode are displayed in the 
upper left of the screen.
zzFrames displayed around any detected 
subjects indicate that they are in focus.

P Mode
3 Compose the shot.
zzTo zoom in and enlarge the subject, move 
the zoom lever toward < i> (telephoto), 
and to zoom away from the subject, move 
it toward  (wide angle).
4 Shoot.
Shooting Still Images
Focus.
zzPress the shutter button lightly, halfway 
down. The camera beeps twice after 
focusing, and AF frames are displayed to 
indicate image areas in focus.
zzIf	[Raise	the	flash]	appears	on	the	screen,	move the 	switch	to	raise	the	flash.	It	will	fire	when	shooting.	If	you	prefer	not	to	use	the	flash,	push	it	down	with	your	finger,	into	the	camera.
Shoot.
zzPress the shutter button all the way 
down.
zzAs the camera shoots, a shutter sound 
is played, and in low-light conditions 
when
	you	have	raised	the	flash,	it	fires	automatically.
zzKeep the camera still until the shutter 
sound ends.
zzAfter displaying your shot, the camera will 
revert to the shooting screen.
zzEven while the shot is displayed, you can 
take another shot by pressing the shutter 
button again.
Shooting Movies
Start shooting.
zzPress the movie button. The camera 
beeps once as recording begins, and 
[
Rec] is displayed with the elapsed time.
zzBlack bars are displayed on the top and 
bottom edges of the screen, and the 
subject is slightly enlarged. The black 
bars indicate image areas not recorded.
zzFrames displayed around any detected 
faces indicate that they are in focus.
zzOnce	recording	begins,	take	your	finger	off the movie button.

P Mode
Finish shooting.
zzPress the movie button again to stop 
shooting. The camera beeps twice as 
recording stops.
•	 You can make a short movie of the day (digest movie) just by shooting s\
till 
images. When the mode dial is set to [], the camera automatically records 
a movie clip of the scene immediately before each shot (Hybrid Auto Mode 
(=
  32)).
Viewing
After shooting images or movies, you can view them on the screen as 
follows.
1 Enter Playback mode.
zzPress the  button.
zzYour last shot is displayed.
2 Browse through your images.
zzTo view the previous image, press 
the  button or turn the  dial 
counterclockwise. To view the next 
image, press the  button or turn the 
 dial clockwise.
zzPress and hold the < q> buttons to 
browse	through	images	quickly.
zzTo access Scroll Display mode, turn the 
 dial rapidly. In this mode, turn the 
 dial to browse through images.
zzTo return to single-image display, press 
the  button.
zzMovies	are	identified	by	a	[] icon. To 
play movies, go to step 3.
3 Play movies.
zzPress the  button to access the 
movie control panel, choose [] (either 
press the  buttons or turn the 
 dial), and then press the < m> 
button again.
zzPlayback now begins, and after the movie 
is	finished,	[] is displayed.
zzTo adjust the volume, press the  
buttons.
•	 To switch to Shooting mode from Playback mode, press the shutter button 
halfway.

Touch-Screen Operations
zzTo view the next image, drag left across 
the screen in step 2, and to view the 
previous image, drag right.
zzTo	access	Scroll	Display	mode,	quickly	drag left or right repeatedly.
zzTo return to single-image display from 
Scroll Display mode, touch the image in 
the middle of the screen.
zzChoose a movie, and touch [] to start 
playback.
zzTo adjust the volume during movie 
playback,	quickly	drag	up	or	down	across	the screen.
Erasing the ImagesYou can choose and erase unneeded images one by one. Be careful when 
erasing images, because they cannot be recovered.
1 Choose an image to erase.
zzPress the  buttons or turn the 
 dial to choose an image.
2 Erase the image.
zzPress the  button.
zzAfter [Erase?] is displayed, press the 
 buttons or turn the  dial to 
choose [Erase], and then press the < m> 
button.
zzThe current image is now erased.
zzTo cancel erasure, press the < q> 
buttons or turn the  dial to choose 
[Cancel], and then press the < m> 
button.
•	 You can also erase all images at once ( =  11 9).
•	 You can also erase the current image by touching [Erase] on the screen in\
 
step 2.
•	 Images can also be erased by using Touch Actions (=
  122).
