White Balance 61 White Balance The white balance function helps you to accurately reproduce colors under different lighting conditions. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a recording program other than the Special Scene recording programs. 1 Open the white balance screen. [FUNC.] [ mWhite Balance] 2 Touch the desired option and then touch [ a]. • When you select [ Color Temperature], [ Set 1] or [ Set 2], set the color temperature or a custom white balance with the appropriate procedure below before touching [ a]. • The icon of the selected option will appear on the screen. To set the color temperature ([ Color Temperature]) Touch [ y] or [A ] to set the desired value. • You can also drag your finger along the dial. To set a custom white balance ([ Set 1] or [ Set 2]) Point the camcorder at a white object, so it fills the whole screen, and touch [Set WB]. When the adjustment is completed, g stops flashing and disappears. The camcorder will retain the custom white balance even if you turn it off. Options( Default value) Operating modes: [ Y Automatic]The camcorder automatically sets the white balance for natural looking colors. [a Daylight]To record outdoors on a bright day. [b Shade]To record in shaded places. [c Cloudy]To record on a cloudy day. [e Fluorescent]To record under warm white, cool white or warm-white-type (3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting. [ f Fluorescent H]To record under daylight or daylight-type (3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting. [d Tu n g s t e n ]To record under tungsten and tungsten-type (3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting. [ Color Temperature]Allows you to set the color temperature between 2,000 K and 15,000 K. [ Set 1], [ Set 2]Use the custom white balance settings to make white subjects appear white under colored lighting. COPY
White Balance 62 NOTES • When you select a custom white balance: -Set 7 [Digital Zoom] to [ B Off]. - Reset the white balance when you change locations or the lighting or other conditions change. - Depending on the light source, g may keep flashing. The result will still be better than with [ Y Automatic]. • Using a custom white balance may provide better results in the following cases: - Changing lighting conditions -Close-ups - Subjects in a single color (sky, sea or forest) - Under mercury lamps and certain types of fluorescent lights • Depending on the type of fluorescent light, optimal color balance may not be obtained with [e Fluorescent] or [ fFluorescent H]. If the color looks unnatural, select [ YAutomatic] or a custom white balance setting. COPY
Special Scene Recording Programs 63 Special Scene Recording Programs Recording in a very bright ski resort or capturing the full colors of a sunset or a fireworks display becomes as easy as selecting a Special Scene recording program. 1 Open the recording programs screen. [FUNC.] [Rec. Programs] [FPortrait] 2 Touch the desired recording program and then touch [ a]. Options ( Default value) Operating modes: [FPortrait]The camcorder uses a large aperture, to achieve a sharp focus on the subject while blurring the background. [GSports]To record sports scenes such as tennis or golf. [q Night Scene]To record nightscapes with lower noise. [ISnow]To record in bright ski resorts without the subject being underexposed. [JBeach]To record on a sunny beach without the subject being underexposed. [KSunset]To record sunsets in vibrant colors. [p Low Light]To record in low-light situations. COPY
Special Scene Recording Programs 64 NOTES •[ F Portrait]/[G Sports]/[ISnow]/[JBeach]: The picture may not appear smooth during playback. •[ F Portrait]: The blur effect of the background increases the more you zoom in ( P). •[ I Snow]/[ JBeach]: The subject may become overexposed on cloudy days or in shaded places. Check the image on the screen. •[ pLow Light]: - Moving subjects may leave a trailing afterimage. - Picture quality may not be as good as in other modes. - White points may appear on the screen. - Autofocus may not work as well as in other modes. In such case, adjust the focus manually. •[ M Fireworks]: To avoid camcorder blur (blur due to the camcorder moving) we recommend using a tripod. [LSpotlight]To record spotlit scenes. [MFireworks]To record fireworks. COPY
Image Effects 65 Image Effects You can adjust the color depth, brightness, contrast, and sharpness of the image. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a recording program other than the Special Scene recording programs. 1 Open the image effects screen. [FUNC.] [Image Effects] 2 Touch [ON] and then touch [Color Depth], [Sharpness], [Contrast] or [Brightness]. • Select [OFF] to turn off the image effects. 3Touch [ y] or [ A] or drag your finger along the dial to adjust the effect level. • + levels: richer colors, sharper image, stronger contrast, brighter image. - levels: shallower colors, softer image, softer contrast, darker image. • To adjust other parameters, touch the desired control button and repeat step 3. 4Touch [ a] to save and apply the customized picture settings. • Z will appear on the screen. Self Timer 66 Self Timer 1 Open the [Self Timer] screen. [FUNC.] [MENU] 8 [Self Timer] 2Touch [ AOn n] and then touch [ a]. •n will appear on the screen. • Repeat, selecting [ BOff], to turn off the self timer. Movies: In record pause mode, press g . The camcorder starts recording after a 10-second countdown*. The countdown appears on the screen. Photos: In record pause mode, touch [PHOTO]. The camcorder will record the photo after a 10-second countdown*. The countdown appears on the screen. * 2 seconds when using the wireless controller. NOTES • Once the countdown has begun, any of the following actions will cancel the self timer. - Pressing g , when recording movies. - Pressing j (on the wireless controller) or touching [PHOTO] (on the screen), when recording photos. - Turning off the camcorder. - Changing the camcorder’s operating mode. - Closing the LCD panel to set the camcorder to standby mode. Audio Recording Level 67 Audio Recording Level You can adjust the audio recording level of the built-in or an external microphone. You can display the audio level indicator while recording. 1 Open the manual audio recording level adjustment screen. [FUNC.] [c Mic. Level] [ yManual] • The audio level indicator and current audio recording level will appear on the screen. When 7 [Audio Mix] is set to [ A On], two audio level indicators will appear, the top one for the built- in microphone, and the bottom one for the external audio. •Touch [ zAutomatic] to return the camcorder to automatic audio recording levels. 2 Touch and hold [ y] or [A ] to adjust the audio recording level as necessary. • As a guideline, adjust the audio recording level so that the audio level meter will go to the right of the -12 dB mark only occasionally. • When the audio mix function is on ( 070), [INT] (built-in microphone) and [EXT] (external audio source) will appear next to the audio level indicator. 3Touch [ a] to lock the audio recording level at the current level. To display the audio level indicator Usually, the audio level indicator will be displayed only after activating the manual adjustment of the audio recording level. You can choose to display it also when the audio level is adjusted automatically. 1 Open the automatic audio recording level screen. [FUNC.] [ c Mic. Level] [ zAutomatic] 2 Touch [Audio Level Indicator] and then touch [ a]. NOTES • When the audio level meter reaches the red point (0 dB), the sound may be distorted. • We recommend using headphones to check the sound level while adjusting the audio recording level or when the microphone attenuator is activated. Built-In Microphone Directionality 68 Built-In Microphone Directionality You can change the directionality of the built-in microphone to have more control over how sound is recorded. 1 Open the [Built-in Mic Directionality] screen. [FUNC.] [MENU] 7 [Built-in Mic Directionality] 2 Touch the desired option and then touch [ a]. Options ( Default value) NOTES • Except when using the audio mix function, an external microphone overrides the built-in microphone. In the following cases, the built-in microphone’s directionality cannot be changed. - When an external microphone is attached to the mini advanced shoe. - When an external microphone is connected to the MIC terminal with 7 [Audio Mix] set to [ B Off]. Operating modes: [ Monaural]Mono recording that emphasizes sound coming from the front of the camcorder. [ Normal]Standard stereo recording; a middle point between the [Wide] and [Monaural] settings in reach. [ Wide]Stereo recording of ambient sound over a more extensive area that adds to the sense of presence of movies. [ Zoom]Stereo recording with the sound linked to the zoom position. The larger the subject appears on the screen, the louder and more focused the sound will be. COPY
Audio Equalizer 69 Audio Equalizer You can use the audio equalizer to adjust sound levels by specifically targeting the high- or low- frequency range. The audio equalizer settings are only available when recording sound using the built- in microphone. 1 Open the [Built-in Mic Freq. Response] screen. [FUNC.] [MENU] 7 [Built-in Mic Freq. Response] 2 Touch the desired option and then touch [ a]. Options ( Default value) Operating modes: [ Normal]Appropriate for balanced sound under most normal recording conditions. [ Boost LF Range]Accentuates the low-frequency range for more powerful sound. [ Low Cut Filter]Filters the low-frequency range to reduce the noise of blowing wind, a car’s engine and similar ambient sounds. [ Boost MF Range]Best for recording human voices and dialog. [ Boost HF+LF Range]Best, for example, for recording live music and clearly capture the spe- cial sound characteristics of a variety of instruments. COPY
Audio Mix 70 Audio Mix When recording, you can mix audio from the built-in microphone with external audio from the MIC terminal and adjust the mix balance for original sound effects. The external audio input can be from the optional WM-V1 Wireless Microphone, a commercially available external microphone or from an external audio player (analog Line In). 1 Connect the external source to the MIC terminal. 2 Open the [MIC Terminal Input] screen. [FUNC.] [MENU] 7 [MIC Terminal Input] 3 Touch [ External Audio] or [ Microphone] and then touch [ f]. • This step is not necessary after connecting an optional WM-V1 wireless microphone. 4 Activate the audio mix. [Audio Mix] [ AOn] 5 Adjust the audio mix balance as necessary. • Touch [INT] (more of the sound from the built-in microphone) or [EXT] (more of the sound from the external audio) or drag your finger along the audio mix bar to adjust the mix balance as desired. 6Touch [ a] to set the audio mix and close the menu.
