6. Routine Maintenance 73 Cleaning Clean the outside and inside of the printer regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace the toner cartridge or the drum unit, make sure that you clean the inside of the printer. If printed pages are stained with toner, clean the inside of the printer with a dry, lint-free cloth. Cleaning the outside of the printer CAUTION Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine will damage the surface of the printer. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia. aTurn off the printer power switch and then unplug the printer. bPull the paper tray completely out of the printer.

Routine Maintenance 74 cWipe the outside of the printer with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. dRemove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray. eWipe the inside of the paper tray with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. fPut the paper tray back in the printer. gPlug the printer back in, and then turn on the power switch. Cleaning the inside of the printer aTurn off the printer power switch and then unplug the printer.

HOT SURFACE After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer will be extremely hot. Wait for the printer to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the printer. CAUTION We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once.

Routine Maintenance 76 To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. dWipe the scanner window with a dry, lint-free cloth. ePut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer. fClose the front cover. gPlug the printer back in, and then turn on the power switch.

Routine Maintenance 77 Cleaning the corona wire If you have print quality problems, clean the corona wire as follows: aPress the front cover release button and then open the front cover. bTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. CAUTION We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. Identifying your problem First, check the following: „The AC power cord is connected properly and the printer is turned on. „All of the protective parts have been removed. „The toner cartridge and drum unit are installed properly. „The front and back covers are fully closed. „Paper is inserted properly in the paper tray. „The interface cable is securely connected to the printer and the computer. „The correct driver for the printer has been chosen and is installed. „The PC is set up to connect to the correct printer port. 7. Troubleshooting 80 Error messages in the Status Monitor The Status Monitor will report problems with the printer. Take the proper action by referring to the following table. The default setting for the Status Monitor is off. If you want to turn the status monitor on, you can change the setting of the Status Monitor in Device Options from the Advanced tab. See Device Options on page 3-6. Error messageAction Toner Low„Buy a new toner cartridge and have it ready for when the Toner Life End status is indicated. No Paper No Paper for Manual Feed No Paper in the Multi Purpose Tray No Paper MP or Size Mismatch No Paper in Tray 1/2/3 No Paper in Tray 1/2/3 or Size Mismatch„The paper tray may be out of paper or not properly installed. If it is empty, put a new stack of paper in the paper tray and then press Go. „If there is paper in the paper tray, make sure it is straight. If the paper is curled, straighten it before printing. Sometimes it is helpful to remove the paper, turn the stack over and put it back in the paper tray. „Cut the amount of paper in the paper tray, and then try again. „Make sure you use paper that meets Brother’s recommended paper specifications. See About paper on page 5. „Load the same size paper that you selected in the current driver setting. Jam MP Tray Jam Tray 1/2/3 Jam Inside Jam Rear Jam Duplex„Clear the jammed paper from the indicated area. See Paper jams and how to clear them on page 84. Incorrect Paper Size for Auto DX„Press Go or Job Cancel. Set the correct paper that you want to use, or load the same size paper that you selected in the current driver setting. The paper size you can use for automatic duplex printing is A4, Letter or Legal. Duplex Disabled„Close the back cover of the printer and put the duplex tray back in. Front Cover is Open„Close the front cover of the printer. Fuser Cover is Open„Close the fuser cover located behind the back cover of the printer.
