After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer will be extremely hot. When you open 
the front cover or back cover of the printer, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustrations.
 
If a paper jam occurs behind the face-up output tray, follow these steps:
aOpen the back cover.

b Pull the tabs at the left and right hand sides toward you and fold down the fuser cover (1). 
cUsing both hands, gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. 
HOT SURFA CE 
After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer will be extremely hot. Wait for the 
printer to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the printer.

If a paper jam occurs inside the printer, follow these steps:
aTurn off the printer power switch. Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.

bHold the green handle of the drum unit. Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops. 
Note
If you cannot pull the drum unit out, make sure that the front cover is fully open as shown below.
 
 
cRelease the gray lock lever (1) that is on the left side of the printer. Pull the drum unit completely out 
using the green handles on the drum unit.

CAUTION 
Hold the green handles of the drum unit when you carry it. DO NOT hold the sides of the drum unit.
 
 
 
We recommend that you place the drum unit on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper 
underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
  
To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the 
illustration.
 
 
dPull out the jammed paper slowly.

ePut the drum unit back in the printer as follows.
1Make sure that the gray lock lever (1) is in the up position and put the drum unit in the printer. Push 
down the gray lock lever (1).
 
Note
When you put the drum unit in the printer, match the green guides (1) of the drum unit handle to the green 
arrows (2) on both sides of the machine.
 
 
2Push the drum unit in until it stops. 
fClose the front cover.

Improving the print quality7
If you have a print quality problem, print a test page first (see Menu tableon page 77). If the printout looks 
good, the problem is probably not the printer. Check the interface cable or try the printer on another computer.
This section gives information on the following topics.
Note
You can resolve a print quality problem by replacing a toner cartridge with a new one when the toner 
indicators start blinking or the LCD shows the Toner Life End...

Coloured streaks or bands down

Replace the toner cartridge that matches the colour of the streak or band. 
(See Replacing a toner cartridgeon page 98.)
Clean all four corona wires (one for each colour) inside the drum unit by 
sliding the green tab. (See Cleaning the corona wireson page 127.)
Make sure the corona wire cleaners are at their home positions (a).
Put in a new drum unit. (See Replacing the drum uniton page 105.)

Coloured spots at 75mm
 
If the problem is not solved after printing a few pages, the drum unit may have 
glue from a label stuck on the drum surface. Clean the drum unit. (See 
Cleaning the drum uniton page 132.)
Toner scatter or toner stain
 
Check the printer’s environment. Conditions such as high humidity and high 
temperatures may cause this print quality problem. (See Positioning the 
printeron page 5.)
