Brother cannot guarantee this optimum performance if toner or toner cartridges of other specifications are used. If toner cartridges are left unpacked for a long time the toner life may be shortened. • DO NOT unpack a spare drum unit until immediately before you put it into the machine. If drum unit is exposed to sunlight or room light the unit may be damaged. • While removing the drum unit, handle it carefully because it may contain toner. Routine Maintenance 71 4 REPLACE TONER4 The machine will stop printing until you replace the toner cartridge. A new and unused original Brother toner cartridge will reset the REPLACE TONER mode. IMPORTANT • We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. • To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.

Routine Maintenance 73 4 dPush down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. eUnpack the new toner cartridge. Hold the cartridge level with both hands and gently shake it from side to side several times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

Routine Maintenance 74 4 fPull off the protective cover. gPut the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically.

Routine Maintenance 75 4 hClean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from right to left and left to right several times. Note Be sure to return the tab to the home position (a) (1). If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe. iPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the machine. Close the front cover. Note DO NOT turn off the machines power switch or open the front cover until the Ready LED lights up. 1

Routine Maintenance 76 4 The printing operation varies depending on the machine setting: Default setting (Stop mode) The machine will stop printing until you replace the toner cartridge with a new one when the LEDs indicate REPLACE TONER. Continue mode To force the machine to continue printing after the LEDs indicate REPLACE TONER, press Go seven times to enter Continue mode (all the LEDs flash twice, and then the Ready LED turns on).
