Routine Maintenance 73 5 Cleaning5 Clean the outside and inside of the printer regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace the toner cartridge or the drum unit, make sure that you clean the inside of the printer. If printed pages are stained with toner, clean the inside of the printer with a dry, lint-free cloth. Cleaning the outside of the printer5 WARNING Use neutral detergents. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia, alcohol, any type of spray, or any type of flammable substance to clean the outside or inside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock. aTurn off the printer power switch and then unplug the printer. bPull the paper tray completely out of the printer.
Routine Maintenance 74 5 cWipe the outside of the printer with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. dRemove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray. eWipe the inside of the paper tray with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. fPut the paper tray back in the printer. gPlug the printer back in, and then turn on the power switch. Cleaning the inside of the printer5 aTurn off the printer power switch and then unplug the printer. bOpen the front cover.
Routine Maintenance 75 5 cTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. HOT SURFACE After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer will be extremely hot. Wait for the printer to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the printer. CAUTION We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once. To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.

Routine Maintenance 77 5 Cleaning the corona wire5 If you have print quality problems, clean the corona wire as follows: aOpen the front cover. bTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. CAUTION Be sure to return the tab to the home position (a) (1). If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe. dPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer. Identifying your problem6 First, check the following:6 „The AC power cord is connected properly and the printer is turned on. „All of the protective parts have been removed. „The toner cartridges and drum unit are installed properly. „The front cover and fuser cover are fully closed. „Paper is inserted properly in the paper tray. „The interface cable is securely connected to the printer and the computer. „The correct driver for the printer has been chosen and is installed. „The computer is set up to connect to the correct printer port. Troubleshooting 80 6 Error messages in the Status Monitor6 The Status Monitor will report problems with the printer. Take the proper action by referring to the following table. If you want to turn the status monitor on, follow these steps: For Windows ® users Click the Start button, All Programs1, your printer (e.g Brother HL-2140), and then Status Monitor. 1Programs for Windows® 2000 users For Macintosh® users (Mac OS® X 10.3 or greater only) See Status Monitor (For Mac OS® X 10.3 or greater users)on page 44. The best combination of these settings will vary depending on your document: • Graphics mode 1 • TrueType mode1 • Use Printer TrueType® Fonts1 1Choose the Advanced tab, click the Print Quality icon, and then choose Manual in Print Setting and click the Setting... button. No Paper Fed Tray 1„The paper tray may be out of paper or not properly installed. If it is empty, put a new stack of paper in the paper tray and then press the Go button. „If there is paper in the paper tray, make sure it is straight. If the paper is curled, straighten it before printing. Sometimes it is helpful to remove the paper, turn the stack over and put it back in the paper tray. „Cut the amount of paper in the paper tray, and then try again. „Make sure you use paper that meets Brother’s recommended paper specifications. See About paperon page 5. „Load the same size paper that you selected in the current driver setting.
