41 Menu Functions Information menu Some information is given only when certain input sources are in use. SubmenuFunctions and Descriptions Source Displays the current signal source. 44 Maintenance Maintenance Care of the projector Your projector needs little maintenance. The only thing you have to do on a regular basis is keep the lens clean. Never remove any parts of the projector except the la mp. Contact your dealer or local customer service center if the projector fails to operate as expected. Cleaning the lens Clean the lens whenever you notice dirt or dust on the surface. Before cleaning any part of the projector, turn it off using the proper shutdown procedure (see Shutting down the projector ), unplug the power cable, and let it cool down completely. • Use a canister of compressed air to remove dust. • If there is dirt or smears, use lens-cleaning paper or moisten a soft cloth with lens cleaner and gently wipe the lens surface. • Never use any type of abrasive pad, alkaline/acid cleaner, scouring powder, or volatile solvent, such as alcohol, benzene, thinner or insecticide. Using su ch materials or maintaining prolonged contact with rubber or vinyl materials may result in damage to the projector surface and cabinet material. Never touch the lens with your finger or rub the lens with abrasive materials. Even paper towels can damage the lens coating. Only ever use a proper photographi c lens brush, cloth, and cleaning solution. Do not attempt to clean the lens while the projector is switched on or is still hot from previous use. Cleaning the projector case Before cleaning any part of the projector, turn it off using the proper shutdown procedure (see Shutting down the projector ), unplug the power cable, and let it cool down completely. • To remove dirt or dust, wipe the case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. • To remove stubborn dirt or stains, moisten a soft cloth with water and a neutral detergent. Then wipe the case. Never use wax, alcohol, benzene, thinner or other chemical detergents. These can damage the case. Storing the projector To store the projector for an extended time: • Make sure the temperature and humidity of the st orage area are within the recommended range for the projector. Refer to Specifications or consult your dealer about the range. • Retract the adjuster feet. • Remove the batteries from the remote control. • Pack the projector in its or iginal packing or equivalent. Transporting the projector It is recommended that you ship the projector with its original packing or equivalent.
45 Maintenance Lamp information Getting to know the lamp hour When the projector is in operation, the duration (in hours) of lamp usage is automatically calculated by the built-in timer. Total (equivalent) lamp hour = 2.0 x (hours used in Normal mode) + 1.4 x (hours used in Economic mode) + 1.0 x (hours used in SmartEco mode) To obtain the lamp hour information: 1. Press MENU and then use the arrow keys ( ///) to go to Information (while under the Basic OSD menu) or Settings > Information (while under the Advanced OSD menu). 2. The Lamp Usage Time information is displayed. 3. Press BACK to exit. or 1. Under the Advanced OSD menu, press MENU and then use the arrow keys ( ///) to go to System Setup : Advanced > Lamp Settings . 2. Press OK to display the Lamp Settings window. 3. Use to select Lamp Timer and press OK, the Lamp Timer information is displayed. 4. Press BACK to exit. Extending lamp life The projection lamp is a consumable item. To keep the lamp life as long as possible, you can do the following settings via the Advanced OSD menu. To access the Advanced OSD menu, see 25 for details. Setting Lamp Power Setting the projector in Economic or SmartEco mode extends the lamp life. Using Economic mode reduces system noise and power consumption by 30%. Using SmartEco mode reduces system noise and lamp power consumption by up to 70%. If the Economic or SmartEco mode is selected, the light output will be reduced and result in darker projected pictures. 1. Under the Advanced OSD menu, go to Picture > Lamp Power. 2. Press OK to display the Lamp Power window. 3. Press / to move to your desired mode, and press OK to save your changes and exit. 46 Maintenance Setting Auto Off This function allows the projector to turn off automa tically if no input source is detected after a set period of time. 1. Under the Advanced OSD menu, go to System Setup : Basic > Auto Off . 2. Press / to select a time period. If the preset ti me lengths are not suitable for your presentation, select Disable , and the projector will not automatically shut down in a certain time period. 3. When done, press BACK to save your changes and exit. Timing of replacing the lamp When the Lamp indicator lights up red or a message appears suggesting it is time to replace the lamp, please install a new lamp or consult your dealer. An old lamp may cause a malfunction in the projector and in some instances the lamp may explode. Go to http://www.BenQ.com for how to purchase a replacement lamp. The LAMP indicator light and TEMP warning light wi ll light up if the lamp becomes too hot. Turn the power off and let the projector cool for 45 minutes. If the LAMP or TEMP indicator still lights up after turning the power back on, please contact your dealer. See Indicators for details. Please replace the lamp when the following lamp warning messages appear. The illustrations show the examples of messages you w ill see under the Basic menu. They are for reference only and may differ from the actual design and the menu type you’ve selected. The XXXX shown in the above messages are numbers that vary depending on different models. StatusMessage Install a new lamp for optimal performance. If the projector operates normally in Economic mode (see Getting to know the lamp hour ), you may continue operating the proj ector until the next lamp warning appears. Press OK to dismiss the message. We strongly recommend you to replace the lamp at this stage. The lamp is a consumable item. The lamp brightness diminishes with us e. This is normal lamp behavior. You can replace the lamp whenever you notice that the brightness level has significantly diminished. Press OK to dismiss the message. The lamp MUST be replaced befo re the projector will operate normally. Press OK to dismiss the message. 47 Maintenance Replacing the lamp • To reduce the risk of electrical shock, always turn the projector off and disconnect the power cable before changing the lamp. • To reduce the risk of severe burns, allow the projector to cool for at least 45 minutes before replacing the lamp. • To reduce the risk of injuries to fingers and damage to internal components, use caution when removing lamp glass that has shattered into sharp pieces. • To reduce the risk of injuries to fingers and/or compromising image quality by touching the lens, do not touch the empty lamp compartmen t when the lamp is removed. • This lamp contains mercury. Consult your local haza rdous waste regulations to dispose of this lamp in a proper manner. • To assure optimal performance from the projector, it is recommended that you purchase a qualified projector lamp for lamp replacement. • If lamp replacement is performe d while the projector is suspended upside-down from the ceiling, make sure that no one is underneath the lamp socket to avoid any possible injury or damage to the human eyes caused by fractured lamp. • Ensure good ventilation when ha ndling broken lamps. We recommend that you use respirators, safety glasses, goggles or face shield and wear protective clothing such as gloves. 1. Turn the power off and disconnect the projector fr om the power outlet. If the lamp is hot, avoid burns by waiting for approximately 45 minutes until the lamp has cooled. 2. Loosen the screws that secure the lamp cover on the top of the projector until the lamp cover loosens. 3. Remove the lamp cover from the projector. 4. Confirm a position of the la mp protection film to put a new film on the same position later, then remove and dispose of the lamp protection film. • Do not turn the power on with the lamp cover removed. • Do not insert your fingers between the lamp and the projector as the sharp edges in side the projector may cause injuries. 5. Disconnect the lamp connect or from the projector as illustrated. 6. Loosen the screw that secures the lamp. 7. Lift the handle so that it stands up. 21 3 4

Use the handle to slowly pull the lamp out of the projector. • Pulling it too quickly may ca use the lamp to break and scatter broken glass in the projector. • Do not place the lamp in locations where water might splash on it, children can re ach it, or near flammable materials. • Do not insert your hands into the projector after the lamp is removed. If you touch the optical components inside, it could cause color unevenness and distortion of the projected images. 9. As shown in the illustration, lower the new lamp. 10. Reconnect the lamp connector. 11. Tighten the screw that secures the lamp. 12. Ensure the handle is fully laid flat and locked in place. • Loose screws may cause a bad connection, which could result in malfunction. • Do not over tighten the screw. 13. Replace the lamp cover on the projector. 14. Tighten the screws that secure the lamp cover. • Loose screws may cause a bad connection, which could result in malfunction. • Do not over tighten the screw. 21
49 Maintenance Indicators There are three indicators which show the status of the projector. Check the following information about the indicator lights. If there is anything wron g, turn the projector off and contact your dealer. 15. Connect the power and restart the projector. 16. After the startup logo is displayed, reset the lamp timer via the OSD menu. • Under the Advanced OSD menu, go to System Setup : Advanced > Lamp Settings > Reset Lamp Timer , and select Reset. • Under the Basic OSD menu, if there’s no signal connected to the projector, go to Reset Lamp Timer and select Reset; if there are signals connected, go to Settings > Reset Lamp Timer , and select Reset . Do not reset if the lamp is not new or replaced as this could cause damage. A Reset Successfully message is displayed to notify that the lamp time has been reset to 0.
