1.6 Service • Any electrical work required to do the servicing of the appliance should be carried out by a qualified electrician or competent person. • This product must be serviced by an authorized Service Centre, and only genuine spare parts must be used. 1.7 Environment Protection This appliance does not contain gasses which could damage the ozone layer, in either its refriger-ant circuit or insulation materials. The appliance shall not be dis- carded together with the urban refuse and rubbish. The insula- tion foam contains flammable gases: the appliance shall be dis- posed according to the applica- ble regulations to obtain from your local authorities. Avoid damaging the cooling unit, espe- cially at the rear near the heat ex- changer. The materials used on this appliance marked by the symbol are recyclable. 2. OPERATION 2.1 Switching on Insert the plug into the wall socket. Turn the Temperature regulator clock- wise to a medium setting. 2.2 Switching off To turn off the appliance, turn the Tem- perature regulator to the "O" position. 2.3 Temperature regulation The temperature is automatically regula- ted. To operate the appliance, proceed as follows: • turn the Temperature regulator to- ward lower settings to obtain the mini- mum coldness. • turn the Temperature regulator to- ward higher settings to obtain the maximum coldness. A medium setting is generally the most suitable. However, the exact setting should be chosen keeping in mind that the temper- ature inside the appliance depends on: • room temperature • how often the door is opened • the quantity of food stored • the location of the appliance. If the ambient temperature is high or the appliance is fully loa- ded, and the appliance is set to the lowest temperatures, it may run continuously causing frost to form on the rear wall. In this case the dial must be set to a higher temperature to allow automatic defrosting and therefore reduced energy consumption. 3. DAILY USE 3.1 Cleaning the interior Before using the appliance for the first time, wash the interior and all internal accessories with lukewarm water and some neutral soap so as to remove the typical smell of a brand-new product, then dry thoroughly. Do not use detergents or abra- sive powders, as these will dam- age the finish. ENGLISH21
3.2 Freezing fresh food The freezer compartment is suitable for freezing fresh food and storing frozen and deep-frozen food for a long time. To freeze fresh foods it is not necessary to change the medium setting. However, for a faster freezing operation, turn the temperature regulator toward higher settings to obtain the maximum coldness. In this condition, the refrigerator compartment temperature might drop below 0°C. If this occurs re- set the temperature regulator to a warmer setting. Place the fresh food to be frozen on the top compartment. 3.3 Storage of frozen food When first starting-up or after a period out of use, before putting the products in the compartment let the appliance run at least 2 hours on the higher settings. If large quantities of food are to be stor- ed, remove all drawers and baskets from appliance and place food on cooling shelves to obtain the best performance. WARNING! Make sure that foods do not ex- ceed the load limit stated on the side of the upper section (where applicable) In the event of accidental de- frosting, for example due to a power failure, if the power has been off for longer that the value shown in the technical character- istics chart under "rising time", the defrosted food must be con- sumed quickly or cooked imme- diately and then re-frozen (after cooling). 3.4 Thawing Deep-frozen or frozen food, prior to be- ing used, can be thawed in the refrigera- tor compartment or at room tempera- ture, depending on the time available for this operation. Small pieces may even be cooked still frozen, directly from the freezer: in this case, cooking will take longer. 3.5 Ice-cube production This appliance is equipped with one or more trays for the production of ice- cubes. Fill these trays with water, then put them in the freezer compartment. Do not use metallic instruments to remove the trays from the freezer. 3.6 Cold accumulators One or more cold accumulators are sup- plied in the freezer; these increase the length of time for which food will keep in the event of a power failure or break- down. 22www.aeg.com
3.7 Movable shelves The walls of the refrigerator are equip- ped with a series of runners so that the shelves can be positioned as desired. 3.8 Positioning the door shelves To permit storage of food packages of various sizes, the door shelves can be placed at different heights. 3.9 Positioning the sliding box The sliding box can be placed at differ- ent heights. Do make these adjustments proceed as follow: 1.lift the shelf with the sliding box up- wards and out of the holders in the door 2.remove the retaining bracket out of the guide under the shelf 3.Reverse the above operation to in- sert the sliding box at a different height. 4. HELPFUL HINTS AND TIPS 4.1 Hints for energy saving • Do not open the door frequently or leave it open longer than absolutely necessary. • If the ambient temperature is high and the Temperature Regulator is set to low temperature and the appliance is fully loaded, the compressor may run continuously, causing frost or ice on the evaporator. If this happens, set the Temperature Regulator toward warm- er settings to allow automatic defrost- ing and so a saving in electricity con- sumption. 4.2 Hints for fresh food refrigeration To obtain the best performance: • do not store warm food or evaporat- ing liquids in the refrigerator • do cover or wrap the food, particularly if it has a strong flavour • position food so that air can circulate freely around it 4.3 Hints for refrigeration Useful hints: ENGLISH23
Meat (all types) : wrap in polythene bags and place on the glass shelf above the vegetable drawer. For safety, store in this way only one or two days at the most. Cooked foods, cold dishes, etc..: these should be covered and may be placed on any shelf. Fruit and vegetables: these should be thoroughly cleaned and placed in the special drawer(s) provided. Butter and cheese: these should be placed in special airtight containers or wrapped in aluminium foil or polythene bags to exclude as much air as possible. Milk bottles: these should have a cap and should be stored in the bottle rack on the door. Bananas, potatoes, onions and garlic, if not packed, must not be kept in the re- frigerator. 4.4 Hints for freezing To help you make the most of the freez- ing process, here are some important hints: • the maximum quantity of food which can be frozen in 24 hrs. is shown on the rating plate; • the freezing process takes 24 hours. No further food to be frozen should be added during this period; • only freeze top quality, fresh and thor- oughly cleaned, foodstuffs; • prepare food in small portions to ena- ble it to be rapidly and completely fro- zen and to make it possible subse- quently to thaw only the quantity re- quired;• wrap up the food in aluminium foil or polythene and make sure that the packages are airtight; • do not allow fresh, unfrozen food to touch food which is already frozen, thus avoiding a rise in temperature of the latter; • lean foods store better and longer than fatty ones; salt reduces the stor- age life of food; • water ices, if consumed immediately after removal from the freezer com- partment, can possibly cause the skin to be freeze burnt; • it is advisable to show the freezing in date on each individual pack to enable you to keep tab of the storage time. 4.5 Hints for storage of frozen food To obtain the best performance from this appliance, you should: • make sure that the commercially fro- zen foodstuffs were adequately stored by the retailer; • be sure that frozen foodstuffs are transferred from the foodstore to the freezer in the shortest possible time; • not open the door frequently or leave it open longer than absolutely neces- sary; • once defrosted, food deteriorates rap- idly and cannot be refrozen; • do not exceed the storage period in- dicated by the food manufacturer. 5. CARE AND CLEANING CAUTION! Unplug the appliance before car- rying out any maintenance oper- ation. This appliance contains hydrocar- bons in its cooling unit; mainte- nance and recharging must therefore only be carried out by authorized technicians. 5.1 Periodic cleaning The equipment has to be cleaned regu- larly: • clean the inside and accessories with lukewarm water and some neutral soap. • regularly check the door seals and wipe clean to ensure they are clean and free from debris. 24www.aeg.com
• rinse and dry thoroughly. Do not pull, move or damage any pipes and/or cables inside the cabinet. Never use detergents, abrasive powders, highly perfumed clean- ing products or wax polishes to clean the interior as this will dam- age the surface and leave a strong odour. Clean the condenser (black grill) and the compressor at the back of the appliance with a brush. This operation will improvethe performance of the appliance and save electricity consumption.Take care of not to damage the cooling system. Many proprietary kitchen surface clean- ers contain chemicals that can attack/ damage the plastics used in this appli- ance. For this reason it is recommended that the outer casing of this appliance is only cleaned with warm water with a little washing-up liquid added. After cleaning, reconnect the equipment to the mains supply. 5.2 Defrosting of the refrigerator Frost is automatically eliminated from the evaporator of the refrigerator com- partment every time the motor compres- sor stops, during normal use. The de- frost water drains out through a trough into a special container at the back of the appliance, over the motor compres- sor, where it evaporates. Periodically clean the defrost water drain hole in the middle of the refrigerator compartment channel to prevent the wa- ter overflowing and dripping onto the food inside. Use the special cleaner pro- vided, which you will find already inser- ted into the drain hole. 5.3 Defrosting the freezer A certain amount of frost will always form on the freezer shelves and around the top compartment. Defrost the freezer when the frost layer reaches a thickness of about 3-5 mm. About 12 hours prior to defrost- ing, set the Temperature regula- tor toward higher settings, in or- der to build up sufficient chill re- serve for the interruption in oper- ation. ENGLISH25
To remove the frost, follow the instruc- tions below: 1.Switch off the appliance. 2.Remove any stored food, wrap it in several layers of newspaper and put it in a cool place. CAUTION! Do not touch frozen goods with wet hands. Hands can freeze to the goods. 3.Leave the door open and insert the plastic scraper in the appropriate seating at the bottom centre, plac- ing a basin underneath to collect the defrost water. In order to speed up the defrost- ing process, place a pot of warm water in the freezer compart- ment. In addition, remove pieces of ice that break away before de- frosting is complete. 4.When defrosting is completed, dry the interior thoroughly and keep the scraper for future use. 5.Switch on the appliance. 6.After two or three hours, reload the previously removed food into the compartment. Never use sharp metal tools to scrape off frost from the evaporator as you could damage it. Do not use a mechanical device or any artificial means to speed up the thawing process other than those recommended by the manufacturer. A temperature rise of the frozen food packs, during defrosting, may shorten their safe storage life. 5.4 Periods of non-operation When the appliance is not in use for long periods, take the following precau- tions: •disconnect the appliance from elec- tricity supply • remove all food• defrost (if foreseen) and clean the ap- pliance and all accessories • leave the door/doors ajar to prevent unpleasant smells. If the cabinet will be kept on, ask some- body to check it once in a while to pre- vent the food inside from spoiling in case of a power failure. 26www.aeg.com
