    Mechanicaltampering,roasting,painting,orsprayingofanymatedal
    onthemirrors,windowsoranypartoftheopticalsystemcanreduce
    theirdetectionatri~iy.PaeeiveInfraredDetectorssensechangesin
    temperature;however,astheamhenftemperatureoftheprotected
    areaapproachesthetemperaturerangeof90to150F,thedetection
    performancecandecrease.
    Alarmwarningdevicessuchassirens,bellsorhornsmaynotalert
    peopleorwakeupsleeperswhoarelocatedontheothersideof
    closedorpartlyopendoors.Ifwarningdevicessoundonadtieranf
    leveloftheresidencefromthebedrooms,thenfheyarefesslikelyto
    wakenoralertpeopleinsidethebedrooms.Evenpersonawhoare
    awakemaynofhearthewarningifthealarmismuffledbynoisefrom
    astereo,radio,airconditionerorotherapp~ances,orbypassing
    traffic.Hnally,alarmwarningdevices,howeverloud,mynotwarn

    Telephonehnesneededtotransmitalarmsignalsfromapremisesto
    acentralmonitoringatafionmaybeoutofsemiceortem~rarilyout
    ofsewice.Telephonetinesarealsosubjecttocompromiseby
    sophisticatedintruders.
    Evenifthesyetemrespondstotheemergencyasintended,however,
    occupanfsmayhaveinauffiiienftimetoprotectthemselvesfromthe
    emergencysituation.Inthecaseofamonfioredalarmsy~em,
    authoritiesmaynotrespondappropriately.
    Thisequipment,tikeotherelectricaldevices,iseubjecftocompcnenf
    failure.Eventhoughthisequipmentisdesignedtolastaslongas10
    years,theelectroniccomponentscouldfailatanytime.
    Themostcommoncauseofanalarmsystemnotfunctioningwhenanintrusion
    orfireomrsisinadequatemaintenance.Thisalarmsystemshouldbetested
    weeklytomakesureallsensorsarewortdngproperfy.
    Insfalffnganalarmsystemmaymakeonee~gibleforlowerinsuranceratea,but
    analarmeystemisnotasubstituteforinsurance.Homeowners,property
    ownersandrentersshouldcontinuetoactprudentlyinprotectingthemselves
