Addonics Technologies – Cipher UDD User’s Guide v1.0 5 Chapter 2 Cipher UDD key Check to make sure you have th e correct version of Cipher UDD key. The key should match the label at th e back of the UDD enclosure. IMPORTANT There is no back door for the Cipher UDD encrypted flash card if the key is lost or stolen. To ensure that t here is a spare key, your Cipher UDD bundled kit comes with one pair of Cipher UDD keys. These 2 key s have identical encryption code. One of these keys should be kept in a safe and secure location and can be sent back to Addonics for duplicati ng additional keys. If y ou are down to the last key, be sure to make a back up of all the data stored inside your encrypted flash card prior to sending th e last key to Addo nics. Addonics is n ot responsible for key lost in the mail or retrieval of the data inside the encrypted flash card. Ø The CIPHER key MU ST be inserted at the front of the UDD enclosure in order for th e flash card to be ACTIVATED. Ø Once the flash card is INITIALIZED using the Ciph er key that comes with the kit, the flash card can only be acces sed by the original key. Ø The 2 keys that come with each Cipher UDD bundled kit have their own unique encryption code. So the key s among different kits are not interchangeable. If you have multiple sets of Cipher UDD kits and would like all the keys to have the same en cryption code, you may make this request at the time of your order or ma il the keys together with master key back to Addonics to reco de them for you. Again be sure that you keep a spare key with you. Make a back up of your data if you are mailing i n your last key. Yellow label DES-64 stands for Cipher UDD 64-bit key Green label TDES-128 stands for Cipher UDD 128-bit key
Addonics Technologies – Cipher UDD User’s Guide v1.0 6 Chapter 3 Keeping Track of the Flash Cards If you are usin g the Ciph er UDD to encrypt multiple f lash cards, it is importa nt to label your flash cards if you are taking th e card out of the UDD enclos ure. The flash card with Cipher UDD encryption will look like a brand new flash card when access by an ordinary flash reader/writer or equivalen t type of device. There will be no partition or any hint to indicate th at the flash card contains encrypted data. When the flash card is partitioned, all the encrypted data will be lost. The same holds true if a flash card already has data on it is inserted into the Cipher UDD. The computer detects the flash card as a bran d new memory card or a memory card that is unallocated. Once yo u proceed to partition th e flash card, the data that was on the flash card will be erased and cannot be reco vered. A Cipher UDD encrypted flash card can be moved to another Cipher UDD but the same key use d in encrypting the flash card must be used in the other Cipher UDD in order to access the flash card. If you are installing multiple Cipher UDD kits into a large organization, it is important to keep track of the flash card and the encryption key. Once it gets mixed up, there is no possible way to recover the data on the encrypted flash card.
Addonics Technologies – Cipher UDD User’s Guide v1.0 7 Chapter 4 Device Compatibility List for Cipher UDD Diagram illustrating devices compatible with the Cipher UDD (PCMCIA Card Adapters not shown in the diagram below have not yet been tested and may not be compatible with the Cipher UDD)
Addonics Technologies – Cipher UDD User’s Guide v1.0 8 Chapter 5 Operation of the Cipher UDD The Cipher UDD is designed not to draw any po wer when there is no media inserted. So the LED light will r emain off even the device is c onnected to the computer. Note: If the flash media i s inserted before the cipher key, the OS wo uld not detect the flash media. Adding a Flash media to the Cipher UDD Step 1 Insert the Cipher key into the key slo t. Step 2 Insert the media fully into the device, the both LED lights will turn green, indicatin g the media is properly inserted inside and t he device is now turned on. Your operating system will report new hardware detected and begin to install the device. Thi s may take a few seconds before a new Removable Disk icon appears in the My Computer fo lder. During this initializati on, the top LED light on the Cipher UDD blinks and will stay green once the computer recognizes the media.
Addonics Technologies – Cipher UDD User’s Guide v1.0 9 Once the Removable Disk icon appears, th e media is now ready and can be used like regular floppy media. During th e read / write operation, the top LED light of the Cipher UDD w ill blink until operation is finished. Ejecting Flash media out of the Cipher UDD Step 1 To remove the media, click on the Safe Remove icon to stop the connection. Once the “you may now safely remove window” shows up. Step 2 Remove the media from the Ciph er UDD by pushing on the eject button. Note: If you eject the media from the Ciph er UDD without checking the Safe Remove icon, a warnin g message will appear from Windows 98SE, Me and 2000. This message is a reminder t hat it is safer to use the Saf e Remove icon when you remove the media to pr event possible data loss in case you are in the middle of copy ing a file to and from the media. You can go ahead and close this message. After the media is ejected from the Cipher UDD, the LED ligh t will go off, indicating the media is fully eje cted from the device. Do not pull the media out of the device without using the eject button. This may crash the computer, as it does no t realize the media has been manually removed from the device. eject button
