As necessary, remove all under dash panels in order to gain access to the ignition switch.

As necessary, lower the steering column to gain working clearance.

Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connectors.

Remove the ignition switch retaining screws from the studs. Disengage the ignition switch from
switch rod. Remove the switch from the vehicle.

To install: Position the lock cylinder in the LOCKposition.

Turn the lock cylinder with the ignition key in it to the ONposition. On vehicles equipped with
automatic transmission be sure that the selector lever is in the Pposition.

Push up on the lock cylinder retaining pin with a  1
/8  in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or small punch. Pull
the lock cylinder from the column housing. Disconnect the lock cylinder wiring plug from the horn
brush wiring connector.

Whenever working on a vehicle equipped with an air bag, always refer to Section 6 for disarming procedures.
Follow the procedures outlined or severe injury, or even death may occur.

Remove the 2 screws from the bottom of the steering column shroud. Remove the bottom half of the
shroud by pulling the shroud down and toward the rear of the vehicle.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Except Mountaineer, 1995-99 Explorer and 1998-99 Ranger
PITMAN ARM
As required, raise and safely support the vehicle using jackstands.
1. 
Remove the cotter pin and nut from the drag link ball stud at the pitman arm.
2. 
Remove the drag link ball stud from the pitman arm using pitman arm removal tool T64P-3590-F or
equivalent.
3. 
Remove the pitman arm...

Loosen the bolts on the tie rod adjusting sleeve. Be sure to count and record the number of turns it
takes to remove the tie rod from the tie rod adjusting sleeve. Remove the tie rod from the vehicle.

To remove the tie rod end, first remove the cotter pin and discard it. A new pin will be used for installation

... then, using a jawed puller, loosen the tie rod stud-to-steering knuckle connection

... and before unthreading the tie rod from the sleeve, make an installation mark on the threads
Lift the tie rod end out of the steering knuckle bore ...
... and unthread the tie rod end from the adjusting sleeve
To install:
Install the tie rod in the tie rod sleeve in the same number of turns it took to remove it. Torque the tie
rod adjusting sleeve nuts to 30-42 ft. lbs. (40-57 Nm).

Be sure that the adjusting sleeve clamps are pointed down ±45°. Tighten the tie rod ball stud to drag
link retaining...

Check and adjust front end alignment, as required.

DRAG LINK
Raise and support the vehicle using jackstands. Be sure that the front wheels are in the straight ahead
position.
1. 
Remove the nuts and cotter pins from the ball stud at the pitman arm and steering tie rod. Remove the
ball studs from the linkage using pitman arm removal tool T64P-3590-F or equivalent.
2. 
Loosen the bolts on the drag link adjusting sleeve. Be sure to count and record the number of turns it
takes to remove the drag link....

Unlock the steering column, engage the parking brake then raise and safely support the vehicle.
1. 
Clean away and loose dirt or oil from the steering rack housing.
2. 
Loosen the jam nut but keep it flush with the outer tie rod end.
3. 
Remove the outer tie rod end, then remove the jam nut from the inner tie rod end.
4. 
Remove the steering rack housing from the vehicle.
