    							Getting Started
    Congratulations on your purchase of a ViewSonic color monitor.
    Important! Save the original box and  all packing material for future shipping
    needs.
    NOTE: The word “Windows” in this user guide refers to the following refe\
    rs
    to the following Microsoft operating systems: Windows ‘95,  Windows NT,
    Windows ‘98, Windows 2000 ,Windows ME (Millennium)  and Windows XP.
    Package Contents
    Your package includes :
    • Color monitor
    • DB-15 video cable
    • Power cord
    • ViewSonic Wizard CD-ROM
    Precautions
    • For best viewing conditions sit at least
    20"fromthemonitor.
    • AVOID TOUCHING THE SCREEN WITH YOUR FINGERS. Oils from the
    skin are difficult to remove.
    • NEVER REMOVE THE REAR COVER. The monitor contains high-
    voltage parts. You may suffer serious
    injury if you touch these parts.
    • Avoid exposing the monitor to direct sunlight or another heat source. The
    monitor should be facing away from
    direct sunlight to reduce glare.
    • Do not place your monitor near a source of water or moisture. • Place your monitor in a well ventilated
    area. Do not place anything on the
    monitor that blocks the ventilation slots
    or prevents adequate dissipation of heat.
    • Do not place heavy objects on the monitor, video cable, or power cord.
    • If smoke, abnormal noise, or strange odor is present, immediately switch the
    monitor off and call your dealer or
    ViewSonic. It is dangerous to operate
    your monitor under these conditions.
    • Keep the monitor away from magnets, motors, transformers and televisions.

    NOTE: The CD jacket contains the Quick Start Guide, and the CD includes the 
    User Guide PDF files and INF/ICM display optimization files. The INF file 
    ensures compatibility with Windows operating systems, and the ICM file (Image 
    Color Matching) ensures accurate on-screen colors. ViewSonic
     recommends 
    that you install both files.
     
    						
    							Quick Installation
    1 Connect video cable(s)
    Make sure both the monitor and computer
    are powered OFF.Macintosh users: Models older than G3
    require a ViewSonic Macintosh adapter.
    Attach the adapter to the computer and plug
    the video cable into the adapter.
    To order a ViewSonic
    ®Macintosh adapter,
    contact ViewSonic. See Customer Support
    in this user guide.
    2 Connect power cord
    Connect the power cord from the monitor to
    a properly grounded AC outlet.
    3 Power-ON monitor and computer
    Power-ON the monitor, then power-ON the
    computer. This sequence (monitor before
    computer) is very important.
    NOTE: At this point Windows users may
    receive a message asking them to install the
    P220f INF file.
    4 Install Display Optimization files
    (1) Insert the ViewSonic wizard CD-ROM
    into your computer’s CD-ROM drive.
    NOTE: if your computer does not have a
    CD-ROM drive, see the Customer Support
    section of this user guide.
    (2) Wait for the CD-ROM to auto-start.
    NOTE: if the CD-ROM does not
    auto-start:
    double-click on the CD-ROM icon in
    Windows Explorer, then double-click on
    viewsonic .exe
    (3) Follow the on-screen instructions.
    5 Windows users: Set the Timing
    Mode (resolution and refresh rate)
    Example: 1600 X 1200 @ 85 Hz.
    For instructions on changing the resolution
    and refresh rate, see the user guide for your
    computer's graphics card.
    Installation is complete. Enjoy your new
    P220f monitor !
    To be best prepared for any future customer
    service needs:
    Write the serial number (see back of the
    monitor) in “For your Records” on page 2
    of this guide.

    							Using the Monitor
    Setting the Timing Mode
    Setting the timing mode is important for maximizing the quality of the
    screen image and minimizing eye strain. Thetiming modeconsists of the
    resolution(example 1280 x 1024) andrefresh rate(or vertical frequency;
    example 75 Hz). After setting the timing mode, use the OnView
    ®controls
    to adjust the screen image.
    The recommended timing mode for this monitor is:
    VESA 1600 x 1200 @ 85 Hz.
    To set the Timing Mode:
    1Set the resolution: Right-click on the Windows®desktop >Properties>
    Settings> Desktop Area (Screen Area for Windows 95 and newer) > set the
    resolution.
    2Set the refresh rate: See your graphic card's user guide for instructions.
    NOTE:To minimize the adjustments required for an optimal screen image,
    select a timing mode from thePreset Timing Modestable below.
    WA R N I N G :Do NOT set the graphics card in your computer to exceed the
    maximum refresh rates; doing so may result in permanent damage to your
    monitor.

    OSD Lock Settings
    You have the option of using the On Screen Display (OSD) locking feature, 
    OSD LOCK, to prevent unwanted changes to the current image settings.
    •OSD Lock: Press and hold the [1] and [
    ▼] buttons on the face of the monitor 
    for 5 seconds. The message “OSD LOCK” will then display briefly,   
    indicating that the OSD image settings are now locked.
    •OSD Unlock: Press and hold the [1] and [
    ▼] buttons again for 5 seconds. The 
    message “OSD UNLOCK” will then display briefly,  indicating that the OSD 
    image settings are now unlocked.
     
    						
    							Adjusting the Screen Image
    Beginning with the Main Menu shown below, use the buttons on the front
    control panel to adjust the OnView
    ®controls which display on the screen. The
    OnView controls are explained in the four steps at the top of the next page and
    are further explained on pages 8-10.
    IMPORTANT: The monitor should be warmed up for 30 minutes prior to
    making any adjustments.

    							To adjust the screen image:
    1To display the Main Menu (parts 1-3 shown below), press button [1].
    2To select a control you want to adjust, press the arrow buttons on the front
    control panel of your monitor (▼▲) and scroll through the choices.
    When the control you want to adjust is highlighted, press button [2].
    NOTE:Some controls on the Main Menu are listed in pairs, such as
    Contrast/Brightness. Press button [2] to toggle between control pairs after
    displaying a control screen.
    3To adjust the selected control, press the arrow buttons (▼▲).
    4To save the control setting and Exit the menu, press button [1]twice.

    							Main Menu Controls
    The menu items shown below can be adjusted by using the arrow buttons (
    ▲▼)
    on the front of your monitor.
     
    Control Explanation
    Contrastadjusts the difference between the image
    background (black level) and the foreground (white level).
    Shortcut:Before displaying the Main Menu, press▼or▲ 
    to display the Contrast/Brightness control screen.
    Brightnessadjusts the background black level of the screen
    image.
    Horizontal Sizeadjusts the width of the screen image.
    Horizontal Positionmoves the screen image left or right.
    Vertical Sizeadjusts the height of the screen image.
    Vertical Positionmoves the screen image up or down.
    Pincushionstraightens curves along the vertical edges of
    the screen image that bow inward or outward.
    Pin Balancestraightens curves along the vertical edges of
    the screen image that bow in the same direction.
    Trapezoidadjusts the top and bottom of the screen image
    until they have equal length.
    Parallelslants the vertical edges of the screen image until
    they are parallel.
    Zoomexpands and contracts the entire screen image.
    Tiltrotates the entire screen image.

    Degaussremoves the build-up of magnetic fields that can
    cause irregular colors to appear around the edges of screen
    images. Your monitor will degaussautomaticallyeach time
