Chapter 3 The Grand Tour This chapter identifies the various components of the computer. It isrecommended that you become familiar with each before you operate the computer. DC IN/Battery indicator2. Wireless communication indicatorDC IN/Battery indicatorThe DC IN/Battery indicator shows the condition of the DC IN and the battery charge status. White indicates that the battery is fully charged while the power is being correctly supplied from the AC power adaptor. Refer to the Power Condition Descriptions section for more information on this feature.Wireless communication indicatorThe Wireless communication indicator glows amber when the Bluetooth or Wireless LAN functions are turned on. DC IN 19V jackThe AC adaptor connects to this jack in order to power the computer and charge its internal batteries. Note that you must only use the model of AC adaptor supplied with the computer at the time of purchase. Using the wrong AC adaptor can damage the computer.LAN jackThis jack lets you connect to a LAN. The adaptor has built-in support for Ethernet LAN (10 megabits per second, 10BASE-T), or Fast Ethernet LAN (100 megabits per second, 100BASE-TX). Some models are equipped with a Gigabit Ethernet LAN (1000 megabits per second, 1000BASE-T). Refer to Operating Basics , for details.Do not connect any cable other than a LAN cable to the LAN jack. Universal Serial Bus (USB 2.0 or 3.0) portOne or two Universal Serial Bus ports, which comply to the USB 2.0 or 3.0 standard, are provided on the left side of the computer. The USB port type might vary depending on themodel you purchased. The port with blue color is USB 3.0 port. The USB 3.0 port is compliant with USB 3.0 standard and backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices. The USB 2.0 port is not compatible with USB 3.0 devices.Note that it is not possible to confirm the operation of all functions of all USB devices that are available. Some functions associated with a specific device might not operate properly. Before removing a USB device from the USB port of your computer, click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon on the Windows Taskbar, and then select the USB device that you want to remove. Keep foreign metal objects, such as screws, staples, and paper clips, out of the USB port. Foreign metal objects can create a short circuit, which can cause damage and fire, possibly resulting in serious injury.Optical disc driveThe computer might be configured with a DVDSuper Multi drive or Blu-ray™ Writer drive.2.6GB and 5.2GB DVD-RAM media cannot be read from or written to. Memory media slotThis slot lets you insert an SD™/SDHC™/SDXC™ memory card, miniSD™/microSD™ Card and MultiMediaCard™. The port with the icon ( ) has Sleep and Charge function, and this function is only provided with some models. USB 3.0 port(s) might work as USB 2.0 port(s) when operating in USB Legacy Emulation mode. Before removing a USB device from the USB port of your computer, click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon on the Windows Taskbar, and then select the USB device that you want to remove. Do not block the cooling vents. Keep foreign metal objects, such as screws, staples, and paper clips, out of the cooling vents. Foreign metal objects can create a short circuit, which can cause damage and fire, possibly resulting in serious injury. Carefully clean the dust on the surface of the cooling vents using a soft cloth.Memory module coverSome models are equipped with the memory module cover. The memory module slot under this cover allows for the installation, replacement and removal of additional memory module. The capacity of the memory modules varies depending on the model. The actual amount of useable system memory is less than the installed memory modules. Refer to the Additional memory module section. Front with the display open This section shows the computer with the display panel open. In order toopen the display, lift up the display panel and position it at a comfortableviewing angle for you. This difference in brightness levels is intended to save power when operating on batteries. However, if you turn off the computer into Sleep Mode, this indicator blinks white.KeyboardThe keyboard contains character keys, control keys, function keys, and special Windows keys, providing all the functionality of a full-size keyboard. NFC (Near Field Communication) detection areaNFC (Near Field Communication) initiates interactions immediately between people and objects close the computer. NFC enables quick ad-hoc connections from PC to PC, or PC to device, through simple physical touch, without the pre-requisite of formal pairing. The interactions are intended to be quick, simple and delightful, simplifying the interactions with daily used devices and promoting a more social computing experience. Some models are equipped with NFC function.Touch PadThe Touch Pad located in the palm rest is used to control the movement of the on-screen pointer. To use the Touch Pad, simply touch and move your fingertip across it in the direction you want the on-screen pointer to go.Touch Pad control buttonsThe two buttons located on the bottom of the Touch Pad are used like the buttons on a standard mouse. Press the left button to select a menu item or to manipulate text or graphicsdesignated by the pointer, and press the right button to display a menu or other function depending on the software you are using. Internal Hardware Components This section describes the internal hardware components of your computer. The actual specifications might vary depending on the model you purchased. Battery packThis computer includes a battery pack inside. However, do not attempt to dismount or replace it by yourself. Contact an authorized TOSHIBA service provider, if necessary. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack provides power to the computer when the AC adaptor is not connected. CPUThe processor type varies depending on model.To check which type of processor is included in your model, open the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor utility by clicking PC Health Monitor under TOSHIBA group in the Apps view, and then click PC Information .Legal Footnote (CPU) For more information regarding CPU, refer to the Legal Footnotes section.Hard Disk Drive or Solid-State DriveThe capacity of the hard disk drive varies depending on the model. To check which type of HDD/SSD is included in your model, open the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor utility by clicking PC Health Monitor under TOSHIBA group in the Apps view, and then click PC Information . Note that part of the hard disk overall capacity is reserved as administration space.In this manual, the word "HDD" or "Hard disk drive" also refers to the SSD unless otherwise stated. SSD is a large-capacity storage device which uses Solid-State Memory in place of a magnetic disk of the hard disk.
