Starting
Standard versions
NPull the starter grip slowly with your 
right hand until you feel it engage – 
and then give it a brisk strong pull 
and push down the front handle at 
the same time. Do not pull out the 
starter rope to full length – it might 
otherwise break. Do not let the 
starter grip snap back. Guide it 
slowly back into the housing so that 
the starter rope can rewind properly.

40 Versions with decompression valve
NPress in the button to open the 
decompression valve.
The decompression valve closes as 
soon as the engine fires.
NFor this reason you must press in 
the button before each starting 
attempt.All models
NPush the hand guard (1) forward – 
the chain is locked.
NPress down trigger lockout (2) and 
pull the throttle trigger at the same

The chain brake is now disengaged – 
your saw is ready for operation.
NOTICE
Always disengage chain brake before 
accelerating the engine. High revs with 
the chain brake engaged (chain locked) 
will quickly damage the clutch and chain 
brake.
At very low outside temperatures
NAllow engine to warm up at part 
throttle.

Tension is correct when the chain fits 
snugly against the underside of the bar 
but can still be pulled along the bar by 
hand. Retension if necessary – see 
"Tensioning the Saw Chain".
Chain at operating temperature
The chain stretches and begins to sag. 
The drive links must not come out of the 
bar groove on the underside of the bar – 
the chain may otherwise jump off the

NReplace the guide bar.
The drive link tangs will otherwise 
scrape along the bottom of the groove – 
the cutters and tie straps will not ride on 
the bar rails.The air filter system can be adapted to 
suit different operating conditions by 
installing a choice of filters. Changing 
the filter is quick and simple.

To avoid damaging the filter, do not use 
tools for removing and installing the air 
filter.
NBlow out the filter with compressed 
air from the clean air side.
If the filter fabric is caked with dirt or no 
compressed air is available:
NWash the filter in a clean, non-
flammable solution (e.g. warm 
soapy water) and then dry.

46 If the setting is too lean there is a risk of 
engine damage due to insufficient 
lubrication and overheating.
If engine is down on power, difficult to 
start or runs poorly at idling speed, first 
check the spark plug.
Fit a new spark plug after approx. 100 
operating hours or earlier if the 
electrodes are badly eroded.

Checking the Spark Plug
NClean dirty spark plug.
NCheck electrode gap (A) and 
readjust if necessary – see 
"Specifications."
NUse only resistor type spark plugs of 
the approved range.
Rectify problems that have caused 
fouling of spark plug:
–too much oil in fuel mix,
–dirty air filter,
–unfavorable running conditions, e.g. 
operating at part load.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of fire and burn injury, 
use only spark plugs authorized...

48 NTake out the screws (1).
NPush the hand guard upwards.
NPull the underside of the fan 
housing away from the crankcase 
and remove it downwards.Versions with Easy2Start
NUse circlip pliers to carefully remove 
the circlip (2).
NPull off the washer (3), carrier (4), 
spring housing (5) and washer (6).
If suitable circlip pliers are not available, 
have the starter rope or rewind spring 
replaced by your servicing dealer.
