21 B Available features Adjusting sound quality (Parametric equalizer) You can enjoy your favorite sounds by adjusting sound quality in the following two ways: •Selecting a preset sound pattern t “Selecting the sound quality you want” •Adjusting sound quality by yourself t “Customizing sound quality” Selecting the sound quality you want 1Press DISPLAY/MENU until the MENU screen appears. 2Press V or v to select “SOUND,” then press u/ENTER*. *You can also use DISPLAY/MENU to enter the selection as well as u/ENTER. 3Press V or v to select the sound quality you want, then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. Indication Sound quality SOFT For vocals, stressing middle range audio ACTIVE Lively sounds, emphasizing high and low range audio HEAVY Powerful sounds, further emphasizing high and low ranges compared with ACTIVE sound CUSTOM Customized sound Customizing sound quality You can customize sound quality by adjusting the sound volume in the 3 frequency ranges “LOW” (low range audio), “MID” (middle range audio) and “HIGH” (high range audio). For each frequency range, you can select the wave pattern from among 3 patterns, and can also adjust the sound volume in 7 levels for the pattern you select. Adjust sound quality by checking the shape of the wave on the display. 1Perform steps 1 - 3 of “Selecting the sound quality you want” and select “CUSTOM.” 2Press . or > for 2 seconds or more to select the frequency range. The frequency range you selected flashes. LOW MID HIGH 3Press V or v to select the sound volume, then press . or > repeatedly to select the shape of the wave from the 3 shapes stored in memory for each frequency range. LOW MID HIGH A: Frequency range B: Sound volume 4Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make adjustment for the remaining 2 frequency ranges. 5Press u/ENTER to enter theselection. Available features (Continued)

Notes •When you select CUSTOM sound, sound may be distorted depending on your sound settings when you turn up the volume. If this happens, turn the volume down. •You may feel a difference in sound volume between the CUSTOM sound setting and other sound settings. Adjust the volume for your preference. •When using the radio, the parametric equalizer function does not work. The G-PROTECTION function The G-PROTECTION function has been developed to provide excellent protection against sound skipping during many active uses. 1While play is stopped, press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the MENU screen appears. Press V orv to select “OPTION,” then press u/ENTER. 2Press V or v to select “G- PROTECTION,” then press u/ ENTER to enter the selection. 3Press V or v to select “G-PRO 1” or “G-PRO 2,” then press u/ ENTER to enter the selection. If you select “G-PRO 2,” the G- PROTECTION function will be enhanced compared to “G-PRO 1.” To enjoy high quality CD sound, select “G-PRO 1. ” Note Sound may skip: –if the CD player receives stronger continuous shock than expected, –if a dirty or scratched CD is played, or –when using poor-quality CD-Rs/RWs or if there is a problem with the original recording device or application software. Protecting your hearing (AVLS) The AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function keeps the maximum volume down to protect your hearing. 1Press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the MENU screen appears. Press V or v to select “OPTION,” then press u/ENTER. 2Press V or v to select “AVLS,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. 3Press V or v to select “ON,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. To cancel the AVLS function Perform steps 1 - 3, changing the AVLS setting to “OFF.”
23 Stopping playback automatically (OFF TIMER) You can set the CD player to stop the play automatically within a range of 1 to 99 minutes. While the timer function is working, “ ” appears at about 5 second intervals*.*Only when Screen 1 or 2 is displayed (page 15) 1Press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the MENU screen appears. Press V or v to select “OPTION,” then press u/ENTER. 2Press V or v to select “TIMER,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. 3Press V or v to select “10 min*,” then press u/ENTER. *Default setting. If you have changed the setting, the length of time already set appears. 4Press V or v to select the length of time you want to set from “01 min” to “99 min”, then press u/ ENTER to enter the selection. •To increase/decrease by 5 minutes: Press V or v repeatedly. •To increase/decrease by 1 minute: Press V or v for 2 seconds or more. To return to the previous screen Press –. To cancel the setting operation Press x. To check the length of time before the CD player stops playback During play, perform steps 1 - 3.To cancel the OFF TIMER function The OFF TIMER function will be canceled: •When you perform steps 1 - 3, changing the OFF TIMER setting to “OFF.” •When you listen to the radio. Locking the controls (HOLD) You can lock the controls on your CD player to prevent accidental button presses. Slide HOLD in the direction of the arrow. “HOLD” flashes if you press any button when the HOLD function is activated. To unlock the controls Slide HOLD in the direction opposite to that of the arrow. 24 Turning off the beep sound You can turn off the beep sound that is heard from your headphones/earphones when you operate your CD player. 1Press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the MENU screen appears. Press V or v to select “OPTION,” then press u/ENTER. 2Press V or v to select “BEEP,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. 3Press V or v to select “OFF,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. To turn on the beep sound Perform steps 1 - 3, changing the BEEP setting to “ON.” Playing tracks continuously (SEAMLESS) (ATRAC CD only) You can play live concert music, etc. without space between the tracks. 1While play is stopped, press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the MENU screen appears. Press V orv to select “OPTION,” then press u/ENTER. 2Press V or v to select “SEAMLESS,” then press u/ ENTER to enter the selection. 3Press V or v to select “ON,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. Note The tracks may not play continuously depending on how the source music was recorded.
25 B Using the radio Improving broadcast reception For FM, extend the headphones/earphones cord. Headphones or earphones For AM, reorient the CD player itself. Note Keep the headphones/earphones connected to the i jack of the CD player. The headphones/ earphones cord works as the FM antenna. If it is hard to hear the FM/ TV/WB broadcast (for U, CA, E92, MX2* models) 1While listening to the radio, press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the display changes. LOCAL >AVLS 2Press V or v to select “LOCAL,” then press u/ENTER. 3Press V or v to select “ON,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. *For the area code of the model you purchased, check the upper left side of the bar code on the package. Using the radio (Continued) Listening to the radio You can enjoy FM and AM programs. 1Press RADIO ON/BAND to turn on the radio. 2Press RADIO ON/BAND until the band you want appears. Each time you press the button, the display changes as follows: USA and Canadian models: B FM t AM t TV t WB Other models: B FM t AM 3Press TUNE + or – to tune in the station you want and adjust the volume. Turning off the radio Press x•RADIO OFF. Tuning in the station quickly Hold down TUNE + or – in step 3 until the frequency digits begin to change in the display. The CD player automatically scans the radio frequencies and stops when it finds a clear station.
26 Listening to the radio If it is hard to hear the FM broadcast (for CED, CEK, EE1, E13, AU2, E13/2* models) 1While listening to the radio, press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the display changes. MONO >AVLS 2Press V or v to select “MONO,” then press u/ENTER. 3Press V or v to select “ON,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. The noise will be reduced but the radio will play in monaural. *For the area code of the model you purchased, check the upper left side of the bar code on the package. While the timer function is working, “ ” appears at about 5 second intervals. 1While listening to the radio, press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the display changes. 2Press V or v to select “TIMER,” then press u/ENTER. 3Press V or v to select the length of time you want to set from “10” to “99,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. To check the length of time before the radio is automatically turned off During play, perform steps 1 - 2. To cancel the OFF TIMER function The OFF TIMER function for the radio will be canceled: •When you perform steps 1 - 3, changing the OFF TIMER setting to “OFF.” •When you turn off the radio. •When you start playing a CD. When listening to the radio on batteries If you connect the external power source plug to the DC IN 4.5 V jack of your CD player, the CD player will turn off. Turn it on by pressing RADIO ON/BAND to continue listening to it.
27 Presetting radio stations You can preset up to 51 stations (for USA and Canadian models) : 7 for TV, 4 for WB, 30 for FM and 10 for AM or 40 stations (for other models) : 30 for FM and 10 for AM. 1Press RADIO ON/BAND to turn on the radio. 2Press RADIO ON/BAND to select the band. 3Press MEMORY for 2 seconds or more. The preset number will flash in the display. 87.50 MHz FM 01 4Press DISPLAY/MENU for 2 seconds or more. The CD player starts scanning the stations from the lower frequencies and stops for about 3 seconds when a station is received. 5If you want to preset the received station, press DISPLAY/MENU while the preset number is flashing. The received station is preset on the preset number 1 and the CD player starts scanning for the next receivable station. If you do not press DISPLAY/MENU within the 3 seconds, the CD player will start scanning for the next receivable station without storing the station. 6Repeat step 5 until all receivable stations are preset. If the stations have already been stored, the newly preset stations will replace the old ones. Presetting stations manually 1Press RADIO ON/BAND to turn on the radio. 2Press RADIO ON/BAND to select the band. 3Press and hold MEMORY until the preset number flashes in the display. 87.50 MHz FM 01 From this step on, start the next operation within 30 seconds after you finished the previous operation. If 30 seconds pass with nothing done, the preset number stops flashing which shows that the CD player has exited the preset memory standby mode. If this happens, start from step 3 again. 28 Presetting radio stations 4Press . or > repeatedly to select the preset number you want to store the station on while the preset number flashes. 5Press TUNE + or – to tune in the station you want while the preset number flashes. 6Press DISPLAY/MENU. When the station is preset successfully, the beep sounds. The new station replaces the old one. The preset number increases by one and the CD player enters the preset memory standby mode. 7Repeat steps 4 to 6 when you preset the stations in the same band. When you preset the stations in the different band, press and hold MEMORY to exit the preset memory standby mode. Repeat steps 2 to 6 after the preset number stops flashing. To exit the preset memory standby mode When the radio is turned on, you can exit the preset memory standby mode using one of the following procedures. Preset stations, however, will remain stored in the CD player’s memory. •Hold down MEMORY until the preset number stops flashing. •Do not press any button for 30 seconds. The preset number stops flashing. •Press u. The CD player enters the CD playing mode. •Press x•RADIO OFF. The radio turns off.To cancel all preset stations 1While the radio is turned off and CD play is stopped, press and hold DISPLAY/ MENU until the MENU screen appears. 2Press V or v to select “OPTION,” then press u/ENTER. 3Press V or v to select “TUNER PRESET,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. “Clear?” appears in the display. When you press u/ENTER, all the preset stations are canceled. Playing preset radio stations You can tune in the station easily by pressing . or > button. 1Press RADIO ON/BAND to select the band. 2Press . or > to tune in a stored station.
29 Changing the tuning interval (Except European models) When using the CD player abroad, change the AM tuning interval on the menu, if necessary. 9 kHz area: Asia and Europe 10 kHz area: the U.S.A., Canada and South America Change it while the radio is turned off and CD play is stopped, as follows. 1Press and hold DISPLAY/MENU until the MENU screen appears. 2Press V or v to select “OPTION,” then press u/ENTER. 3Press V or v to select “AM STEP,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. 4Press V or v to select “9 kHz” or “10 kHz,” then press u/ENTER to enter the selection. Note After changing the tuning interval, you need to preset radio stations again. Using the radio
30 B Connecting to a power source Using the dry batteries Use only the following dry battery type for your CD player: •LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries For the battery life, see “Specifications.” Note Be sure to remove the AC power adaptor when using the dry batteries. 1Slide OPEN to open the lid of your CD player, then open the battery compartment lid inside the player. 2Insert two LR6 (size AA) batteries by matching the 3 to the diagram in the battery compartment and close the lid until it clicks into place. Insert the # end first (for both batteries). When to replace the batteries You can check the remaining power of the batteries in the display. t t t t t Lo batt* * Beep sounds. When the batteries are depleted, replace both batteries with new ones. Notes•The indicator sections of roughly show the remaining battery power. One section does not always indicate one-fourth of the battery power. •Depending on operating conditions, the indicator sections of may increase or decrease. To remove the batteries Remove the batteries as illustrated below. To attach the battery compartment lid If the battery compartment lid is detached by an accidental drop, excessive force, etc., attach it as illustrated below.
